@justduckygal True, I tried to remake the original experiment, by using the same elements kuleshov used. Since Mata Hari was famous at the time the experiment was made I thought it would be appropriate to use an image of her.
The heavy makeup is because of the type of film that was used in the early days of film. Early filmmakers used orthochromatic film stock, which had a limited color-range sensitivity. It reacted to red pigmentation, darkening white skin and nullifying solid reds. To counter the effect, Caucasian actors wore heavy pink greasepaint (Stein's #2) as well as black eyeliner and dark red lipstick (which, if applied too lightly, appeared white on screen), but these masklike cosmetics smeared as actors s
@badkluster Of course. It relies on unknowingness of audience about this effect. In my opinion face expressions are very ambivelent,so no one can actually say what kind of emotional reactions they represent unless it is immediate.Apart from this:does anyone noticed that an actor has excessive water eye-effect,so he portrays a sadness/almost grief which is very unlikely a normaln reaction to soup or women???

@charliegirl6 its the same shot of the actor every time, to show that manipulative editing can create an intellectual and emotional response from the audience.
Not only is the Kuleshov effect persuasive in all 3 shots I feel it is the expression on the actors face that is also effective. His eyes are very expressive and his mouth and throat convey hunger for food and the woman. The eyes are almost tearful so grief for the little girl is conveyed impressively. All praise should go to the actor for his skill and the director for choosing such a talented man. Some other examples of the effect on youtube are good but not as impactful as this original film.
@xNKFootballx You'r probably an England soccer supporter. Or you should be anyway, what with not having a brain. Why is England going to suffer floods in the next few days? Because the Irish, Welsh and Scottish are all pissing themselves.
I have a feeling that i'll be referencing this a lot while writing my film theory paper on montage. This is going to be fun!

@I3abuadze I love the way they used to use heavy makeup in olden-times films. Was that just to enhance people's features, or some other reason?

@charliegirl6 lol, this is the male actor Ivan Mozzhukhin. I think he just has on a lot of make-up and looks a lot like his mother.
