I'm 54 years old. I knew Glen when I was 6. I was best friends with his sister Susan. He was the worst! He tormented us as only an older brother can. Years later I was in LA on a layover , he came to my hotel and took me out ofr the night. I will alway rember him as a great guy, and the young boy who make my life and Susan"s hell. But I still love him and his mother Ann who was my moters best friend.
i dont believe that there is an "Ex-Gay" if you like the same sex as you or the opposite or both in the begining of your life ,, well then thats who you are ! of course you'd want to be straight to satisfy your family so you wouldnt be reject etc. but forget them you only live one life and you should do whatever you want to do !
Teaching people to hate themselves is not therapy. To the so called religous people saying you love someone while tourturing them is sick and has nothing to do with god.
Humans can be sick individuals. Torturing others just because they aren't like everyone else. Shock therapy is so fucked up, especially when it's done to try and change a persons sexual preference. Why is homosexuality such a problem for people? It doesn't affect any of our lives in a negative way. Leave these poor people alone.
i had no idea he went thru all this, thanks for bringing this story to the light. more people need to hear about how much damage this can do. imagine if that overdose had been fatal. we would have never been blessed with those memorable performances from this great actor!
RIP Glenn Shadix! <3 Beetlejuice and Nightmare Before Christmas were two of my favorite movies as a kid. He was fabulously funny in Beetlejuice! I have a Mayor action figure from Nightmare Before Christmas, and a beetlejuice head knocker. You left us too soon.
I'm sorry to hear he has passed, and I'm glad his story is out there for the world to see. This is some of the sick sadistic practices that psychiatrists are up to.
Be proud of who you are. Should straight people go to ex-straight shock to try to turn them gay? Gay people can't be convinced to be straight no more than straight people able to be convinced to be gay. People are who they are, not who they aren't.
What a moving story. I was raised in a very Christian home and I never understood the hatred against gay/lesbian people. He was lucky to have parents who loved him unconditionally regardless of his sexuality . Having family support during the time he came out was rare, especially in Alabama.
In a way liked him in movies and i also remembered a movie he did too appeared, bought the vhs video movie called DUCSTON CHECKS IN with Jason Alexander, Faye Dunnaways and good others, very funny movie, my kids loved it. RIP Glenn!!! <3
RIP dude. I am one of those people who doesn't believe that people are necessarily born gay, but believe that in many people, it is something set in childhood. I feel bad for him though, and am aware that many gay people who grow up around religion have to go through this crap.
And WHY didn't I know of this great guy until he died!?! I'm almost 60 now, and I can relate so well to the social atmosphere he grew up in. I, myself, didn't go through aversion "therapy" but after I came out in 1972, knew of guys that did. Vicious, And wouldn't it be so easy if it worked -- so convenient for those "christians" howling for our extinction!
I met a man who had aversion therapy for homosexuality. I once asked him what impact the therapy had afterwards. He told me none at all with regard to attraction to men...but that he hated being near slide projectors (since they had used one to show the images of men he was meant to grow an aversion to).
So barbaric, am shocked every time I hear stories like this. But am so glad that people post them.
wow! that's a very touching story. I would really love to see the documentary when it's completed.
it would also be interesting to hear from those who have a problem with homosexuals, dig deep, and really find where the fear and hatred comes from and how it gets so ingrained into people.
I promise the SOUND will be corrected for the documentary. The message will not change. I want to educate not instigate and have no Book to promote. Just my truth
Aversion therapy produces either corpses or robots. Society needs to decide whether it wants happy gay people or a bunch of corpses and robots to deal with. The future does not lie with the corpses and robots.
No way could you have truly been "complicit" at 17, you were a child, and the wrong that was done to you is horrifying. Thank you for speaking out on this. I love that your father eventually came around, some don't...what a tragedy. I wonder how many young men and women were successful in taking their own lives...
@Angel63456 It was a matter of survival, at the time. I WAS young and I do not defend my complicity. It was a confusing time for my entire family---all of whom I love.
Someone should do an "Anonymous" number on Love wins out and on NARTH. Joe Nicolosi is as big a charlatan as L Ron Hubbard and knows just about as much as psychiatry.
Mr. Shardix's dad is a hero. He admittedly coudln't understand his son's sexual orientation but he put that incomprehension aside to keep him alive. That's harm reduction at it's verry best.
He's deceased and was from Alabama. I did not know that. The things I learn every day.

Aversion therapy is a form of torture. Once a person is classified as mentally ill ... that person's rights are determined by a doctor.
