It's trying too hard to make us sad. And why didn't the mother tell him this story when he was upset about the bullying? I can understand if she didn't want to rub his nose in the fact that she gave him that eye, but she kept a major part of his history from him. It would have helped him with the bullies to know the source of his pain. I don't see why she just about took it to the grave. If he knew about the situation, then he likely wouldn't have been such a dick.
