Are there any other songs you'd recommend similar to Black Water? I haven't been able to find many that affect me in the same way this does, but it isn't like many other Doobie Brothers songs. I am thinking along the lines of the acoustic, finger picking, folk, back country type of sounds that this song carries so successfully and wonderfully. I would like to build up a repertoire of those types of songs to play around with. Thanks, I appreciate any recommendations you can give.
great question....not sure if i can help or not - as far as how a song affects you that is of course your call. I think this song is very special to a lot of us because of all the memories it may bring back to surface as well as the incredible piece of writing and playing it is from Mr. PS!
I like your idea of building up tunes to play that you and others will enjoy over the long haul - if i were to suggest one, and this of course my preference, it would be Never Going Back Again.
Great guitar and thanks for helping me learn the tunes. How about Doobie tunes from the first 2 albums? All great fingerpicking tunes and a time before Michael McDonald turned them pop (no diisrespect to him tho)...
appreciate the kind post and thanks for checking out the video! I'm with you on the early years.....great great stuff - i'll look over them again and see what jumps out....all the best with your music!
You inspire me so much to get better. I have been following the tutorial all day practicing so that I can hopefully become as good as you one day! Now which song to learn after... There are so many I want to I don't know where to begin! Well thanks for all of your effort in helping others grow as guitarists! It is really great.
thanks so much for your kind post and i'm very glad the video is helpful to your playing! I wish you all the best with your music and know you can use me as a resource if i can help in any way......all the best!
incredible... its amazing to me how you can coordinate your picking fingers so well, that is something i definitely need to work on... great playing man, keep it up!!
Geez, it sounds like two guitarists! How in the world does Pat Simmons play those parts and sing at the same time? Great job on the lesson as well as the performance, Dale.
You have to play it a billion times before you start singing (If you're amateur like me) but there are some songs that are difficult that I can play and sing along. Most I cannot. But from experience, once I can play it without problem and commit it to muscle memory, I don't realize I'm playing it.
So I would assume that's how most musicians do it, but I'd guess it doesn't take them as long because they've been at it for so long; and their Labels assign release deadlines. Can't be late :)
Oh, well he was just asking how he can play a song like that and sing at the same time. I found it difficult to start adding lyrics at one point (not for this song, I still can't add lyrics yet, still learning) but for some by bands like Collective soul, i've played enough times to figure out lol. I hope more people see this video, I really enjoyed both parts. Learning and listening. How did you learn it?
Thanks for your post! I wanted to play this tune for a long time but really didn't have any support resouces and just too complicated to pick off studio track. Now I have live video & audio to 'steal' from!! Much easier these days than when I started - lifting a needle off vinyl!!
thanks so much - and i agree with your comments! Pat S. is just such an awesome picker whose humble approach leaves him only noticed many times by us wanna be like hims!
the tune is in the key of D and i think five tone scale would work and even a major scale. Never really worked out the solo - all the best with your music!
Dale..........I can't begin to tell you how much I enjoy your talents bro! I've been telling many of my friends about your covers and lessons....including my teenaged Nephew who is becoming quite the "shredder" in his own right -- he is soaking up music like a sponge and looks forward to your instruction here on Youtube! Happy New Year to you! Looking forward to many more of your covers in 2010!
