When Filipinos say "Proud to be Filipino", I think it is a way of affirmation that as a group that we can stand amongst other people of the world. Maybe it is not the right phrase because it sounds conceited and vain. It is usually said when another Filipino do good on something. One can long windedly say "Proud and happy of your success and I share in your achievement as another Filipino". Ha ha.
