hey i grew up by the NW corner of 270 just on top of columbus back in the sticks, and im currently going to school at UK. to me, i really dont hear a southern accent at all in your voice. which is understandable of course since we are from relatively the same area. i have really noticed the "oo" enunciation especially with my roommate (from michigan) who says i elongate words with the long 'o' such as "phone," ive noticed it with him as well
I moved to Cincinnati from the Columbus area. Someone at work was like "Where are you from? I noticed a differant dialect from most people around this area?". I didn't even notice anything differant lol.
@cwillia1111 You got me there; I grew up in the North Campus neighborhood, which as you may know is very working-class with a lot of the longtime residents having roots in Kentucky and West Virginia, and I think there are noticeable traces of that in my accent.
That's interesting that he brought up Baltimore. Marylanders have an accent all their own, and the only thing I've heard close to it ARE people from Southern Ohio!
You have a very nice voice and no Southern accent although I do get what your gf is saying by your "oo" sound. As for "roof" I know Ohio ppl who say "ruff" for roof and I know Southern ppl who say "roof" for roof so I think you have an Ohio accent although it is slower than what I`ve hear from other Ohio speakers. I think your gf must have her own accent which makes yours stand out more than it is.
Port Clinton (northwestern) here. You sound like you have the usual accent I hear in these parts, which to us is no accent, but I can't really hear any southern. Usually the only southern accent I can't hear is my father's, who's from Virginia, and that's because I've lived with him all my life.
wow. yeah. in columbus i never thought of people from ohio having an accent. it was just kinda there, haha. but i say roof not rough, i say milk not melk. but i tend to sometimes have a canadian and north carolina accent occasionall? which is an odd combination. God do I love Ohio. : )
to me, as a northern ohio-an, you have a slight "twang", if that's what you want to call it. I have no idea if i have an accent. I say "milk" as "melk" and stuff like that.
That's because Northern Ohio actually has the accent- The Great Lakes accent distinctive to Buffalo and Rochester NY, Cleveland OH, Detroit MI, Chicago and into Milwaukee- NO OTHER PART OF THE COUNTRY HAS THAT ACCENT.
The CENTRAL OHIO accent (Columbus) is actually the classic NEWSCASTERS accent-
Oh, I'm not from Ohio by the way and no, I'm not from the South either.
Bro, I'm from FL and I consider myself having a standard American accent. You don't really have any accent per se. I think the reason that people mistake your voice as somewhat "southern" is the fact that you don't have the typical midwestern accent. But, you could pull it off as a newscaster. But... ps: I also say "Rooof" (not "rough" ). Only difference. Oh, your A in And is more NorthEast. My 2 cents.
Yeah, the "a" that rhymes with "yeah". It doesn't come through so well here, but there are times I catch myself with a bit of WV/KY drawl in my speech. And thanks for the compliment re: news voice :-) I like to voice act for personal amusement and can do some pretty good announcer voices, including a fair imitation of '30s-'50s-era "mid-Atlantic" speech.
@moogyboy6 moogy what is funny is that here in Buffalo NY we say crick & warsh we warsh are hands down in da crick. also I graduated from Lancaster High 2 towns east of the city only it is Layncast-er. the older Bflo accent is similar to NYC in some ways. like cah(car), wutevah. & yet we have alot of Polish Italiano,Siciliano & German like Sheecahgo (Chicago) lol & Detroit. alot of different things depending on what side of the city yer awn. btw we also say brar for the booby holders. take care!
then again, I speak similarly XD. west central area, closer to indiana, around Lima is where I got it, though I was not raised in Ohio (mom was, and that's where I got my accent). you can listen to my vids if you want. (warning: not creationist friendly). similar to yours, but I've been influenced by the texan accent a little. and I spent much of my life in Kuwait XD
Compared to Michigan, your long 'o's are more diphthongized, as in Pennsylvania. I've noticed that in Toledo they speak identically to Michigan, but the accent starts to change as you go immediately southward, as to Sandusky. The main markers that I notice are "may-zher" for "measure" (further North it's MEH-zher) and a tendency to "warsh" hands.
Im from dayton, here is the thing about Ohio. Northeast is like the east coast. Northwest ohio is like the Wisconsin accent and the south (below 70) is a watered down KY. You wound just like we do in dayton. we are in a standard midwestern linguistic belt. All over the country TV reporters go for that accent because it is easily understandable all over the country.
I have never noticed a difference between northwest/northeast accents in ohio...the only dramatic difference is the southern ohio accent. Which is, like you said, a watered down KY twang.
I live in Sidney and I thought it was funny when my cousin from Phillie said she loved how funny people in Ohio's accents are. I didn't think we had an accent. '_'
@falcons12345 So true! I'm from about 30 miles east of Cincinnati. Been all over the U.S. and world now with the military...and everyone asks me what part of the south I'm from. Even people native to the south think I'm one of them. Watered down Kentuckian is absolutely right in rural areas of southern Ohio. When I ask people how they THINK we should talk, they assume we sound like Minnesotans for some reason.
You needs to clean yo room!
