Supercooling Water freezing instant frozen drink science thermodynamics
supercooling is like cloud formation, when it reaches the water reaches the dew point all it needs is an impurity like sticking pasta in a pot of boiling water. water molecules need something to form around. thats what my science teacher told us anyway
It could work. Try putting a supersoaker with pure water in a fridge and carefully take it out. but it would have to be pressurized with air before supercooling, only granting you on shot. USE IT WISELY.
So can you drink the frozen stuff? And is it that cold outside or is there chemicals involved the "super cooling"? Do you know what would happen if that stuff went into your eyes? FROZEN EYES SWEET!
people who think hes faking it are idiots infact the same thing can happen with rain and can be quiet bad because 4" can form on telephone lines and snap them
Why does everyone think its Sodium Acetate?? Maybe if u were fucken smart enough u wud understand the concept of Super Cooling.. Dumb assholes. Give the guy sum respect this is awesome? Props man!!
its called sodium acetate, its a super saturated solution of it. its the same thing in those heating packs with the little metal activator. because the freezing point it at 52C it is technically supercooled at room temperature. When he pours it out, it starts the first crystals to form which starts a chain reaction.
its distilled water with no impurities so the water doesn't freeze around a point and cools way below 0c. when it comes into contact with something it freezes rapidly. you can also heat it above 100c and watch it "explode" when it hits something
if u pour this on a frog or mouse and it freezes instantly, and you keep it frozen (by some method)for a million years, will it still be alive when the ice melts?
acutally with some frogs yesyou see tehy freeze during the winter and stay frozen for many years but then when they freeze their organs shut down and when the defrost they start back up again
Once had my tongue stuck in a bottle... some of my "friends" had supercooled it and i tried to drink it... it froze... fast... but it only lasted like 10 secs...
Water doesn't expand 30%. The density of ice is ~0.917g/cc where water is ~1.000g/cc, an 8% increase in volume. Only about 10-25% of the water is converted to ice. So the volume change would be about 2%, i.e. unnoticable. Below 0C, the density of water increases as it gets colder, so the water's volume decreaases as it goesd from -20C to 0C. :-)
Liquid nitrogen boils when it contacts anything, well anything hotter than 77K, which is most things in my basement. Pouring out liquid nitrogen and having it turn to slush would, indeed, be a neat trick. Feel free and do that.
I had this happen to me with a bottle of Carbonated water, I took it out of the freezer, and It was the coldest drink I've ever had! Total slush- soooo good
This just happened to me at work- bottle of "hint" flavored water in a mini fridge. Took it out and it was freezing cold (but still liquid) -had a sip- put lid back on and shook it up a bit to mix the flavor- it instantly turned to ice. Took me by suprise- so I youtubed it and found your video. Crazy.
No, its reverse osmosis processed water, and has less that 20ppm of disolved solids. Its 99.998% pure. Sea water, by contract, is only 96.5% water.
However the propigation of the dendritic crystal growth slows as the salinity of the remaining water increases. But in the video, you see a uniform growth of crystals all the way to the bottom. If there were significant levels of salts, it would slow signifcantly as the growth reaches the bottom as in other videos where brine was used.

its -16c, my bet is that the reason its not frozen in the first place is because it needs a catylist so when the water touches the ice, it freezes
is that right?

So when the water starts to crystallize, does the water/ice/slush mix warm up to the normal freezing/melting point of 0 degC?
alexcwagner 4 years ago
Yes, thats exactly what happens. The resulting slush is at 0C, nearly 20C WARMER than the supercooled water.

Dihydrogen Monoxide is pretty dangerous stuff. It can cause severe burns, pretty much the biggest factor in Acid Rain, and if inhaled can be deadly.
And this stuff is known to be in oceans, rivers, lakes ponds. You'll even find it coming out of your shower head and taps. Now thats scary.
