Akhtari Bai Faizabadi or Begum Akhtar as she was named after her marriage to barrister Ishtiaq Ahmed Abbasi-who prohibited her from singing..[what a waste]

She received the Sangeet Natak Academy Award for vocal music, and was awarded Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan (posthumously) by the Govt. of India .

Born on October 7, 1914–and passed away on October 30, 1974,

A truly sad character-who suffered immensely in life-first by the abandonement

of her father-then her strict husband.

She was natural.

the gazal gaiki ends at begum akhtar.  the semi classical music thumri and dadra was sung by begum akhatar the best way.
