Arkansas Traveler, Iowa Stubborn, Mississippi Mud, Carolina Moon, Somewhere In Old Wyoming, Deep In the Heart Of Texas, Missouri Waltz, Back Home Again In Indiana, Blue Moon Of Kentucky, Tennessee Waltz, Alabamy Bound, etc..etc, I LOVE those state songs.
has to be about the best fiddle rendition of arkansas traveller i have heard on here, or anywhere else for that matter, must be near the top of anyone's list.
I never thought of "soaring" as a likely characterization of this tune, but man, this soars--especially the B part. Inspiring. Imho, the acoustics of that place only help the soaring. Thanks!
It's a viola strung like a violin. E A D G Sounds great. I play a 15" five string viola. E A D G C. Violin strings will fit on a 15" viola with fine tuners. Or use three viola strings and a loop end .010 string for the E.
Very nice job! Ha I first thought viola too but when I heard it I know it was a violin -- obviously the fiddler is petite so the instrument looks deceptively large. Fun to listen to.
''once upon a time in arkansas an old man sat at his little cabin door and fiddled out a tune he liked to hear, a jolly tune that he playe by ear. it was raining hard but the fiddler didn't care he sawed away a jolly old air. his roof it leaked like a waterfall, it didn't bother the man at all.'' those were the lyrics. very nice, do you agree? it must be so hard to play that on an instument! that was so awesome. it blew my mind. I loved that i sang it for my school concert in the spring time. :)
Does anyone know if that is a violin or a viola? I know that traditionally a fiddle is a violin but in the video it looks more like a viola. I also know that fiddling can be done on the viola.
we are playing this in our orchestra right now, and it's great to hear the violin solo part the fast way!!! I LOVE the sound of your violin, it is so smooth and sweet. Great job.
Funny, the comment below about not being a concert song... I was immediately struck by how wonderfully full and glorious this fiddle sound is ~ instantly reminding me of one of my all-time favorite "fiddlers", the classically-trained Marie Rhines (Tartans and Sagebrush, Biscuit City Records, '79.)
It's a sound and a style that's unique and stunning. I hope this woman and her music go far. I'm looking for more now!
Very nicely done. I have a question that I hope someone can answer. I am trying to learn this tune. How is the instrument tuned? I am tuned EADG and I can't get my fingers to cross across fast enough to pull off the high end sequence.
This is cool! For some reason in the beginning it looks like they are playing in a one room school in the winter. Gives it a country look. Good playing as well, that fiddle/viola has a good sound. Its good the guitar doesn't over ride the fiddle but I think a flatpick might have gave the rhyhthm section a better presence, and thats coing from a fingerpicker.
wow!! bravo!! good job:D i really liked that!! Hey just one question, Is that a viola? cuz it seems really big....but idk, i play the fiddle and the guitar so i really liked that, good job with the back up (talking to guitar guy)! And that whole piece was great so good job to both of you:D!!
Whenever I play Arkansas Traveler in nursing homes, they all think its Turkey in the Straw. Actually, every fiddle tune they hear they think is Turkey in the Straw! Henry
