By the first minute I had tears rolling down my face. This is such a beautiful video, and quite describes what Near might be feeling on the inside.

Even if people don't support the two as a couple, it's obvious that they had SOME sort of friendship. You can kind of tell by how Near acts around Mello. Also, in the last episode of Death Note, Near sounds like he's close to tears when he's talking about Mello(in the Japanese dub, at least).

They are if you want them to be since they don't show any interest in girls. Shonen-ai NearxMello fans like for them to be gay (for each other). But if you don't like that sort of thing, you can just see this as being a very tender, platonic, almost brotherly friendship. In the anime/manga, Near and Mello have very strong feelings for each other. What those feelings happen to be are left to the audience to decide.
