Pure Class. Muddy w Ernest 'Big' Crawford on Bass. Early one April Saturday in '48 the Chess Bros loaded a car trunk with this new 78 & hand delivered it to @ 180 South Side 5 & Dimes, beauty saloons, barber shops & record shops. By mid-afternoon it was blasting from their store front speakers & price had gone up from 79c to $1.10 each. Muddy went to buy 2 copies next morning but the shop owner only let him get one so he had to send his wife to buy the 2nd copy.
I'm a 50's Rock & Roll guuy who don't really like Blues all that much, but this is one of my favorite songs, I'd probably consider this one of the first Rock and Roll songs.
They talk of the "first" rock n roll song..Fats, Bill Haley, Elvis..this one gets my vote. Recorded in 1949...? way ahead if its time...If I didn't know better I would have said this was the Rolling Stones...oh wait
i read that this record was the first hit Muddy had in Chicago. the vinyl records were sold at drugstores, barber shops, and other places. when new records came in (pretty common practice), the store owners would play them in store and also with speakers on the streets. this song and lyrics with just Muddy's voice, electric slide guitar, and acoustic bass hit the soul of many immigrants from the rural south living in Chicago. they began buying up copies of the record. the 79 cents price doubled.
Great Muddy Waters song to a great picture slide show :)

I can honestly say that music as we know it today would not be the same had there not been Muddy Waters. He would have been 98 today!

Man, this is THE definitive recording of this song. (62 years ago. Wow!)
Great collection of pictures! Such an expressive face - looking at him and listening to his voice, I can't help smiling. :-)
