Their population are probably too low (in some cases the specie is already extinct in the wild and only found in zoos. They are also threatened by poachers.)
I'm confused...I thought there were 10,000 cheetahs left. Were they talking about the Asiatic cheetahs? But I though there were only 100 of those left. O.o
It seems that may be some misinformation. There are approximately 10 to 12 thousand cheetahs left on the planet. They have gone through a local extinction in 16 countries in the past 30 or 40 years. The big problem is really lost of habitat and the fact that cheetahs don't do well on conservancies. They need wide open space to breed and protect their young. The balance is so out of whack that they generally lose 19 out of 20 cubs due to starvation, genetic problems, lions, hyenas, and humans.
65 out of 100 cubs du survive in South african countrys like Botswana and Zambia. And in Namibia the % is even higher. But the bigest problem is not poachers but farmers who tend to shoot at cheetahs the moment they see them to protect theyr cattle
Farmers are not as big a problem as they were in the 90's. There still are canned hunts in some countries, and of course poaching still occurs. However, the biggest problem is human impact which manifest as loss of habitat. Cheetahs need huge ranges and they don't do well on conservancies where the predator/prey balance is dictated by man and the cheetah Mom's don't have enough space to roam, move their young and protect them from other predators.
Yes, in places like Namibia they are doing better but Cheetah Conservation Fund is largely responsible for that situation. Yes, they are doing better in Botswana but Cheetah Conservation Botswana is very involved in helping cheetahs in that area. In recent times they've gone through a local extinction in 16 countries and there are maybe 60 left in Iran.
Support your local zoos.
They are trying to breed many endangered animals that are no longer found in the wild.

@yehyeh22 Well they do this so when all the ones in the wild die, they live on... I wish humans were more responsible....
