  • no female vocalist has ever done it better

  • Great! !With love from Italy! Thanks Aretha.

  • Aretha Franklin queen of soul

  • @RealGood22.....Otis "coined it"?? I love Otis' version. But this song had been by many artists before Otis was born.

  • soul is beautiful, thanks lady aretha

  • Her voice is always outstanding, but this one belongs to Otis only. He coined it and no one will be able to top his version.

  • The queen at her best

  • Pure Class!

  • For some reason this song makes me think of Christmas

  • one person doesnt have respect for a sassy women ;D

  • OMG...this song just goes right to your soul. and the 1 person that diliked this needs to try a little tenderness.

  • Aretha is THE QUEEN OF SOUL

    end of argument.

  • First recorded in 1932.(wiki)

  • I had this on LP in the 70's (I think it was) and wore it out. I would love to get this whole album on CD. It's fantastic! The Queen at her best!

  • this is a beautiful song and Aretha sings it beautifully :-)

  • KYM WHITLEY COULD PLAY MS FRANKLIN

  • Aretha's version of "With Pen In Hand" is now avail and she blows it out the water. This woman is a rare find and a true Nat'l Treasure. Aretha Franklin you should know and believe that you are greatly loved my Soul Sister #1. Many others wil come but they will never be bale to match what you had inside of you.

  • pure

  • This album was passed on to me by me sister when I was 8 years old. To this day this is my favorite by Aretha. The entire album defines her as queen of soul. I am 60 now and still love this album. Thanks for posting and lets not compare this to Otis. Two different singers and this version came before Otis. Heavenly!

  • A Beautiful song.....

  • I love this style from Ms. Thang she was truly on top, this is special I truly love this.

  • I first heard this song years ago watching the movie That Night. Great Song!

  • @Nungirl238 I did too,its been with me ever since. Great Movie, too.

  • beautiful

  • I love Aretha just the same. She is beautiful.

  • Aretha doesn't sound like this any more but the point is in time, as long as there are recording and audio devices, this can and will be heard and judge as a standard that stood for a particular time and was able to transcend beyond it and become a classic example of musical and vocal art that provided the brick and fortification to something we call human civilization, that will hopefully survive for some time to come.

  • I think her rendition has to take some beating.

  • We listened to this album in the 60's at Ellsworth AFB South Dakota. One of the best voices and best string arrangements you'll ever hear on this selection.

  • Aretha's voice touches me in a place that no other singer can. Her voice really moves me! Your the best Ree, just showing you some R-E-S-P-E-C-T!!!!!!

  • wow....this is pretty good

  • there are three reasons you get a great song, fantastic singer, great arrangement, and superb lyrics.get it right and this is the result, the ultimate artistic achievement of mankind

  • She has GOT to have one of the greatest voices of ALL time...

  • Excellent! man oh man, this lady can really sing......I can listen to Aretha all day. Any song from any year recorded, I just love the way she sings.........

  • Excellent man oh man, this lady can really sing......I can listen to Aretha all day...

  • This woman sings all the singers from her era under the table. There's no one better than Aretha, not even the great Dinah Washington or Billie Holiday. Aretha will be remembered as one of the great song stylist of "all" time.

  • I had this (I guess it was an LP back then) and played the whole thing to death. This was just ONE of my favorites off that album. I searched for the album, did you post all the songs from the album? The whole thing was a masterpiece in my opinion! Thanks for posting; she's always been and always will be THE QUEEN.

  • Total enjoyment, what a sound

  • a . . . xBx

  • WOW !!

  • better than the original.

  • @merlino1987 What do you think the "original" is?

  • the strings intrude too much don't work with the music

  • To get the full definition of this song and Aretha's artistry on this song, it has to be played on it's original format. when i was a teenager, i listen to this on the record player and to hear it on phonograph, is heaven.

  • maravilhoso

  • Exactamente, fue escrito hace ya 77 anyos, pero es una buena version de esta cancion. Saludos!

  • Folks, let me help you out here. This is not a song original with Otis Redding. This song was written in 1932 and released by Ray Noble (It's on YouTube), In 1933 it was sung by Bing Crosby. It was sung by dozens of others before it got to Mr. Redding. If you think Mr. Reddings version is exceptional, that's great, but give credit where credit is due. Actually, I think the original version is superior to all others I've heard. Give it a listen.

  • Taste is different for everyone. imagine everyone with the same wife at home... not funny...

Personally, this version and the one of Sam Cooke are two of my favorites.

  • @djlemmyb She'd be happy though! Happy just to know, that we all love her so,

  • I gave it a listen and it did nothing for me..Aretha's version is a superb reading of a american standard..Let's enjoy it...

  • Schubert was the King of Soul imho and Aretha is the Queen..

ps Mozart and Francois Hardy runners up..

  • This is an outstanding version of this song. Otis has it - but this is a remarkable effort too. With a talent like Arethas you can take on a song like this.

  • dag look at that pic

  • Are you kidding. No disrespect to Otis but this very is outstanding. Aretha is a true musician and she just pours her heart out with everything she sings.

  • @TheQueenAretha Sang it Baby

  • My friend, please understand that this rendition ( as well as the song it's self) pre-dates the great Otis Redding's signature interpretation. No need to compare. Just Enjoy.

  • Just as we enjoy Aretha's interpretation of Otis Redding's original song RESPECT.

  • What is soul music to you? Some music is meant to be felt.

  • You're listening to a song sang by a woman dubbed the 'QUEEN OF SOUL' & you're still asking me if I KNOW WHAT SOUL IS? I'm not quite sure you know what soul is. Hey, to each his own. Explore a little, because soul IS something you feel & that means a kats like Mozart had soul. peace.

  • yesss man!!!

  • UM...ISN'T MUSIC ABOUT EMOTION? WHAT FREAKIN PLANET ARE YOU LIVING ON? THIS HAS TO BE ONE OF THE DUMBEST COMMENTS ON YOUTUBE. sorry you are so unhappy.
