  • "As opposed to de-icing your steps!"

  • My mum really needs to learn from you .

  • For this recipe, what size jars did you use and how many could you fill? The smallest mason jar we could get is an 8 oz, and I have a feeling 1.5 cups ofherb salt will fill the whole jar up.

  • Great idea! :)

  • Why has this video been removed? It was up earlier today......!!!!!

  • Chef John, you've made my holidays! I have both rosemary and lemon thyme in my herb garden this year!

  • i made and gave this to like four friends but they all knew nothing about dishes using herb salt. me neither. mehhh

  • Hwo long does this keep? I know herb salts that end up tasting like hay

  • Could this be done with fresh garlic? Or should we dry the garlic before blending?

  • My experience is that when matel mix with salt, if you don't use it up soon, the jar will corrode with rust.

Store it in a really dry place, eg, your fridge. or a dry room. It's a really important point to note when you live in humid countries.

  • stinkin' ipad, making me press enter when I want to press shift. Piece of shift. never borrowing my friend's ipad ever again. kinda ruins a comment when it gets cut off like that. anyways, i meant to say "-wen i wuz a lidle kid"

  • no offense chef but calling herbs 'erbs bothers me :P

    its GOT A H IN IT >_>

  • @PPPrulez American English. Live with it.

  • @PPPrulez

    The H is silent.

  • @RyuksDeathNot3 thats the problem, it isnt in all other english speaking countries its pronounced herb...

    silenced H my ass...

  • @PPPrulez We say the H in Australia. It sounds really weird to hear Americans say 'erbs :-)

  • thanks chef John. I'm gonna make this for my grandma. She cooks a lot and this will be a great and healthy alternative to the regular salt she uses. :)

  • Thanks for the great idea--I'm meeting my boyfriend's mom for the first time this Christmas and was looking for something home-made to give her. She loves cooking so this will be perfect :)

  • Srs question! What would this go well on? I mean FF sounds not that great, and on the lable says use "on" is it like go in the bath, like bath salt's or do you just rub salt on yourself!? Srs answers only plz.

  • @slayer7160 its for food you dumbass

  • @vintagejar23 Srs answers only plz. Your ignorance has been noted, rubbing salt on your foot,....what kind of fool do you take me for? PROBLEMS? :D

  • @slayer7160 its for FOOD dumbass, not your foot. your idiocy has been also noted.

  • @vintagejar23 I know, I know, FOOT FOOT, I GET IT ALREADY! you put it on your food and eat your toenails, cool. I'll think I'll pass though. My Milkshakes > your milkshakes.

  • @slayer7160 right. aint nothing better than fresh toenails.

  • @slayer7160 Rosemary and thyme go well on most meats. This salt would be great on roasted potatoes as well. Grilled things and Mediterranean dishes would be good too.

  • @inept0 omg, roasted red potatoes sound amazing with this, and so do steaks, tyvm mate, I think I'll be wipping up a batch right now :D

  • great idea!

  • Chef John, can you tell me where you got the jar?

  • @gsuni They are Mason jars .....everyone carries them , wallmart , bed bath and beyond ....etc....

  • Salt is still salt. This is not a good low-sodium gift. This is just salt dressed up. Great for those not needing to cut back sodium. Just don't be fooled. It IS still almost pure sodium.

  • Guess what my mother in law is getting :)

  • "Use on or with food [ . . . ] instead of de-icing your steps."

  • Excellent. I may make this for my mother-in-law this Christmas. My mother-in-law with the high blood pressure on the sodium-restricted diet.

  • @stooge81 hahaha

  • @stooge81 or you could opt for Wright Salt , a better choice I think .. read about it !

  • @stooge81 stooge? More like Scrooge! lol

  • @EccentricPuzzle Haha me too.

  • how long do you cook this or do you eat it out of the jar?

  • @chuyton lmfao

  • chef john you make me cum

  • I thought this video was going to show how to make bath salt for some reason

  • @lovecandieee thats why he put a sticker on it saying "use on or with food" ;)

  • @lovecandieee

Well, I guess You could use this receipe for that purpose also. But instead of rosemary, maybe something like lavender or rose flowers or so may do it better.

And, in case You want to be on the safe side: better don´t use metal lids. Metal looks nice, but due to the salt it may corrode, if You store the container in Your bathroom.

  • Good video and good gift idea

  • I was hoping you'd do the ol' tappa tappa to the salt :-(

  • Thanks to you my front walk now smells like an herb garden. At least I don't have any ice out there!!

  • @noodlehead95 Thx a bunch, hard to figure out for a dane :P

  • @Konguba lemon thyme

  • @Konguba thyme

  • its should say 1 douche instead of dislike

  • How much Salt do chef`s use, I always was told by my instructor: "chef`s only use alot of salt if they have no or very little taste in their food" I know it is good to use Salt in your food but for god`s sake.

  • @Cidaldragon we chefs use salt so it taste better. it really really depends on the thing we want salted

  • Of cause it depends on the item you want to salt, but there is such thing as chronic overuse.

  • You amaze me. Has anyone ever told you that you are brilliant? Sure they have. I just did.

Do you have any recipies on making home made bread in a bread machine?

  • THERE ARE NO DISLIKES

  • There is 1 dislike now, Not mine by the way!!

  • great idea for an xmas gift! its too bad that i dont have a food processor :(

  • I Love You Chef John!

  • lol 180 likes no dislikes. ur right u were never uncool

  • is it healthy ?

  • @HafizLive Has no fat, pretty much all sodium. Use sparingly if you have high blood pressure?

  • @MalkavianHand Basically use like salt (about as unhealthy as salt is), but tastes better :P

  • @HafizLive Sea salt is much healthier than regular salt.

  • now you just need to make another jar with red herbs!

  • Aaaww that would be soo good on french fries...

  • Do I need to add salt?

  • @loopasars well it is called herb salt u know

  • @loopasars HA!

  • instant like

  • Why is your voice so sexy Chef John?

  • @xLithePanther You probably have a daddy complex.

  • @xLithePanther lol.....

  • I never would have thought of this and that's why I love this channel. Another great tip from the Chef!

  • this video made me thirsty hehe

  • This is a great idea. Chef John, do you have any more (cheap) food related gift ideas?

  • Great idea, I usually give out a culinary care basket at XMAS time. I throw in herb salt, flavored olive oils (garlic, herb, spicy), spice mixes, baking mixes, and usually a few baked goods. Not only is this an extremely cheap idea, but it really makes people happy when they recieve a gift like this!

  • @faylinameir: Very nice gift. You can even specify it to the person you're giving it to. I once gave my mother in law a basket to make her own 'boerenjongens' (raisins on brandy, google on 'boerenjongens recipe' and you'll find it on food(dot)com. She was really happy with it.

  • @KittyTh Boerenjongens really isnt something I'm a fan of, may be due to the fact I dont much like brandy. Even though its not culinary, bath salts, bath fizzbombs, homemade soaps, all those make good gifts too! =-)

  • What can you do if you don't have a food processor??

  • @musicismygirlfriend3 blender? coffee grinder?

  • @musicismygirlfriend3

cut each individual salt grain into quarters and do the same with the herbs (so the size matches with the salt)

    or

    pound it with your face

    or

    go buy a food processor

    or

    don't make this

  • @ramenx2 I like the face pounding idea:)

  • @ramenx2 Couldn't you use a mortar and pestle or a hammer?

  • This looks so good. :)

  • Deja vu?

  • This looks amazing, I love all your videos! <3

How long can herbed salt keep? Indefinitely?

  • Yes!! Do you have other gift ideas? Please post one a day if possible for a week, etc. :)

  • Someone stuffed my stocking full of herbs. Smells nice, hard to clean out.

  • Awesome : D

  • What kind of herbs do you recommend using for fries if the person doesn't like rosemary?

  • @killabean chives, and parsley... those are two staple herbs in my kitchen. Works good on just about anything. =-D

  • I saw this in a medical cannabis shop

  • is this very versatile? like instead of other herbs can you put in differnt salts or even dried peppers or something?

  • @ContradictoryLilac: Why don't you just try that? You can make all sorts of mixtures like that. Go crazy! ;)

  • How long does that last? does it turn brown?

  • @zev007 salt is a natural perserver
