Actually, Kentucky didn't completely remain loyal to the Union. During the Russellville convention, Kentucky was added to the list of Confederate States and she became the 13'th and center star on the flag. Of course this caused Kentucky to have two governments during the war. But even the Kentucky Union government were mostly southern sympathizers. Virginia along with the Carolinas was the birth place of the Confederacy.
I always thought and read that the 13th star in the middle of the St Andrew's Cross was for Missouri, not Kentucky. Missouri, like Kentucky, had two governments, but it was the union government that was in power. Kentucky's Union government declared the blue grass state neutral and blasted both sides for "Invading" it's neutrality.
God I had this tape now I can't find it anywhere. I love the scene at Gaithers with the CSX coal train and the K5H. Too bad it ain't in this preview.

Southern Pacific did not merge with ATSF. It merged with Union Pacific.

I always thought the border states were the slave states that stayed loyal to the Union. (MO, KY, WV, MD and DE) Which would leave out Virgina.

You are correct, Virginia was not a border state but a confederate state in fact Richmond was the capital.
