Strang brings up the fact (maybe it was few lectures ago) that if the sum of the filter coefficients add to zero, then the filter is a high pass filter; alternatively, if the filter coefficients add to 1, it must be low pass. That is not mentioned often, but is important. Tricks like that need to be vocalized more frequently!
