The myths are representations of what people have perceived reality to be. In more primitive times, the myths were an adequate explanation, especially since there was very little scientific understanding to conflict with mythical models. But now, science has surpassed myth, but the theists still cling to the myth. However, science does not preclude a sense of wonder, awe and mystery, in which there might reside that we could call "God." The theists, however will not accept such a vague notion.
@wickedenchanter I understand the god of the gaps but my this is more about how they take any point againt the stories about "god" as an attack on "dieties". My point is that the stories are irrelavent when talking about dieties unless someone can demonstrate SOMETHING to bridge the gap in the logic here. You can discuss one or the other but these are separate ideas that people have fused.
I have had a diffiuclt time explaing this, I hope my viewpoint has clearly come through in this vid.
@wickedenchanter Yes, but in that case I think we should drop the word 'god' entirely from the discussion since it carries so much disproven and ridiculous baggage.
@farvision I think this is a couple steps furter than the "baggage". This is like talking to the people that believe in elves and trying to explain the them the stories (LOTR, keebler, DnD, etc . . ) about elves do not have anything to do with any real discussion on the topic UNLESS you can demonstrate that the story has some connection to reality.
