He was one of the top two or three tenors of the 20th century. In the Verdi repertoire, no one can compare.

Perfectly sung for his voice and much better expressed. He finds the sentiment in every word. Here you can make out that he is communicating with the people on the stage as the King. He still makes it work as a scene and as a crowd pleaser. Most tenors are pleased just to sell the song to the house, he made it work. No reggie theater needed. He was so cleaver.

Much better than any of those clowns who came after him in this role! I saw him do it and it was HIS! He even recorded it TWICE in the studio with a magnificent Nilsson and L Price at the pinnacle. Amen

il miglior Riccardo (o Gustavo) della 2^ metà del 20^ Secolo: esecuzione tecnicamente meno raffinata che nell'integrale Decca del 1961: l'interprete vocale è però forse qui + fantasioso ed è gradevole anche l'interprete scenico. Non possiedo in CD l'integrale RCA 1966 (fuori catalogo ?) che Celletti definisce, per Bergonzi, lievemente inferiore alla Decca: l'ho però ascoltata molti anni fa in disco e ricordo le pregvoli filature sugli acuti di "irati" e "forze" (qui non ci sono)..

For his generation, I think he owned this role. One of the few days tenors of the era who actually knew how to sing. I never heard him distort the melodic line.

Recordings can be deceiving. He didn't sound like this in the theater. I heard him sing this in Vienna. No squillo.

@Agorante bergonzi like most 'italian' tenors started singing more and more dramatic with passing years, this is a recording from 1967. maybe you heard him in vienna in the 70s or 80s?
