In Alaska, using streamers to pull across the running Sockeye and snag them in the mouth is the normal technique for catching them. Perfectly legal and common.

actually, sockeye eat fish and i know this cause they are up north in lake michigan and they are caught on fresh smelt or alewives. Plau salmon will bite a hook and i know this cause we catch kings and coho on spoons and crank baits until mid november. They are biting out of agression not to eat.
the philippino flip they do it all the time on kodiak you see them doing it on silvers too and yes i know reds are krill eating non biters and on the kenai they use the kenai twitch to hook them ......... nothing new thats why i fly fish silvers and steelhead they slam flies

Where I live in Oakville Ontario they don't even use fishing rods to kill the Salmon. (Bronte Creek) They beat them with a steel pipe in the skinny shallower areas. It's sad to see.
Im a fisherman on the shores of lake michigan on the illinois side. In a stocked lake like LM why not snag. The fish that we are snagging are not spawning, they never were gunna spawn. So if their not helping the population why not use them for food for people. Just my 2 cents on the matter.

@ericjamesgauthier It is a sockeye fishery. Sockeye are notoriously difficult if not impossible to catch in FW. Most AK fisheries for sockeye are exactly like this one. They are required to release all fish not hooked gill plate forward (not 100% on that some places are in the mouth only). They are "flossing" the fish and its 100% legal. If this were a chinook fishery every single person doing this would have a ticket before leaving.
Finally a new method for snagging. I've been putting split shot behind a golfball sized treble hook which works just fine. Hell I even get em in the mouth Im gettin so good!
i prefer to drift fish. i use bait usually eggs or skein or meal worms and a floating slip bobber with split shot spaced out and drift for the fish....
Then again i dont even fish for trout that i can see... i always fish deeper slower moving holes were fish stack up before the spring run.. then the fly fisherman can have there share of Flossing and snaggin while i sit at home knowing i got the best fight.. right when there fresh from the lake in the fall

@ericjamesgauthier It is a sockeye fishery. Sockeye are notoriously difficult if not impossible to catch in FW. Most AK fisheries for sockeye are exactly like this one. They are required to release all fish not hooked gill plate forward (not 100% on that some places are in the mouth only). They are "flossing" the fish and its 100% legal. If this were a chinook fishery every single person doing this would have a ticket before leaving.

i prefer to drift fish. i use bait usually eggs or skein or meal worms and a floating slip bobber with split shot spaced out and drift for the fish....

Theres no reason why snagging in certain places should be illegal. Its just harvesting your own food like picking berries or growing crops.
