I believe punk embodies the anti-rockstar (anti-image), an attempt at destroying the ego, the image, the frontman is on the same 'level' as the audience, exposed. Punk is not a sound, it is the destruction of rules, if there was a 'rule' to punk (a sound) it would not be punk anymore.

Although I don't know if fashion and status is what brought the demise of punk; I think the decline began in 2004 when NoFX started pushing politics with the "anti-Bush" and "pro-Kerry" mantras on stage.
