I laugh whenever I see comments about the Miata being a girl's car. I mean, really. You judge one's sexuality by a car? I guess it's a shocker when a guy driving a "BIG, MANLY MUSTANG" turns out to be gay and the guy driving the Miata isn't.

miatas have superior handling that is why people put bigger engines in them because they can handle very well. The car is also so light which means it goes alot faster when you put a powerful engine.

That being said...it was really hard to hate the car itself. Driving it felt like I was flying my own little rocket ship, to say nothing for reliability. I tried really, really hard to kill that car, but it just kept chuggin'. Still running today.
@Grummur if you drop it on coilovers, add some tasteful aftermarket rims and a roll cage, it makes a BIG difference...it doesn't make look at all "ricey"

A stock LS1 in a Camaro or Corvette gets around 27 MPG on the highway and I can imagine that with it being in a car that weighs 1000 lbs less its even higher then that. Secondly why would your insurance rates go up? I have an 87 Grand prix that came stock with a V6 and it now has a LS1 and I pay the same rate. You dont have to tell the insurance company that you replaced the motor. Just thought I'd say.

Correction. Pontiac Grand Prix's were rear wheel drive until 1987 and in 1988 went to front wheel drive. Mine is an 87 T-top Grand Prix. It was already rear wheel drive all I did was put in a stock LS1 and 4L60E tranny and a better rear end for posi-traction and poof its a new car. There was a little more to it then that like having to run a new wiring harness from painless wiring and having to mount the ECU under the dash but it wasnt too bad.
@tsenmaisng I drive a Datsun PL521 and have had 510's and 620's all my life. My buddy Greg in Boring, OR owns a '93 Miata with a KA24DE turbo in it, and it rails hard. I drove it, and enjoyed the hell out of it. That's coming from a person who knows nothing BUT handling/speed because I've been driving Datsuns all my life.
It's a mark of stupidity to think that any car platform is inferior just because it rolled off the lot in a weaker state. Miata's have been a bad ass platform since they were released. Tiny car, huge potential since day 1.

The LS1 motor weighs right around what the Miata's stock iron 4 banger weighs.
After putting the motor in the car the weight ratio still stays at 50/50.
