Monsieur K and Alan Merrill will be on Fuji TV on August 16th '07, international broadcast on the Sekai Gumi show. It's a 90 minute special with a live segment at BB King's in NYC.
If I have learned one thing about Alan Merrill, it is that he is a brilliant writer. I'm just starting to watch the VC videos and I am amazed at how many different sounds this genius comes up with.
Yes, Alan Merrill draws songwriting inspiration from the most obscure sources, so it's possible that at least the title of the song was inspired by the gay underground 60s film classic "boys in the band". Especially given the origins of Vodka Collins in early 70s glam-glitter rock.
The lyric on the surface is about a rock band, but as usual with Merrill's song lyrics he probably has his own personal and private jokes going on between the lines.
It sounds a bit like The Kinks, actually. Boys in the band was a great movie. Wonder if the song's composer, former androgynous glam-rock pin-up Alan Merrill was inspired by that feature film in this song?
Filmed in Yokohama Japan in the latter half of the 1990s.

The best real rock band ever from Japan. No contest. Many have tried, but Vodka Collins was real.
