I am in Medford Oregon and no longer have my ski boat which I used to wakesurf behind. I thought I might try real surfing and bought myself a nice Russo 7.4. Anyone out there on the Oregon coast up for helping me out as far as finding good spots and helping me through the beggining stages? Nobody I know likes to surf but I love the water. Also I got pretty good wakesurfing but obviously I get pulled up by the rope before I let go and surf the small wake. How hard is it to get up paddling?
I have been surfing for 25 years and give surf lessons, and kitesurfing lessons. I can tell you first off you bought the wrong board. Unless you are a very small person. A long board works best for learning. The more waves you catch the better you get. You will have a hard time on a 7'4. Look me up lets get you set up with a lesson. I will give you a years worth of information in one lesson.
I'm 57 and decided I had to get into the soup off Newport before it was too late. I contacted a local icon by the name of Paul Hanson. I brought some luggage in the form of a knock out in Santa Cruz in my youth. He worked with me in some splash and giggle sessions and then we went to the outside. I caught my first outside wave and rode it to the beach about three months ago. Agate Beach, Otter Rock and South Jetty are the places.
Yes true, it is pretty tough to surf in oregon but its better than having to fight 50+ assholes for a 2 foot piece of s*(t at say Salt Creek and Trestles in SoCal

Oregon does get some decent waves, but overall it pretty much sucks! The only thing that makes it appealing is that there are minimal crowds.

True. There are plus and minuses for both.

surfers are just a lot nicer in the northwest altogether.

It is cold notice everyone has wet suits on... but some times you get "warm" days but still would want a wet suit

this isn't a hot spot, this is where you go when you want to get dropped in on by a bunch of kooks

This doesn't do Newport any justice. I bet it was filmed on a weekend.
