Merely to praise Christ in His Perfectness keeps us on our knees, with our heads pitifully bent. Clearly, this is not what Christ had in mind. Christ came as a liberator. Christ understood that we as humans were for ever held to the ground by the pull of gravity - our ordinariness, our mediocrity - and it was through His example that He gave our imaginations the freedom to fly. In short, to be Christ-like. Nick Cave's article about Gospel according to Mark
@DarthVulva - The fact that i am not a better singer or not a singer at all doesn't make that cracking ugly voice sound well. it sounds as it is. "Tone" is science, it's not a matter of liking or not liking, he's not at the right tone there.
I can't claim to know what Nick meant, but to me it signifies the idea that christians use god to hide their heads in the sand regarding the realities of this world. They have no clue about taking responsibility or accepting the atrocities of life because they think god will handle everything for them. Think about it...it's about everything christians abohor. "We've bred all our kittens white so we can see them in the night". It's dripping with sarcasm.
yeah. you need to know Nick Cave to get this. Back and forth. He has done it all but throughout he has a healthy respect and a good love hate relationship with the man above. he is amazing. he questions our faith not his own. he always gets back to this theme but he dwells on our own questions and failings and how useless we are as human beings. Yet throughout he brings up religion. I don't think he is perfect. I just think he is a modern day messenger. God also has to adapt to the times.
Trust me, this song is not about how great life with god is. Its the opposite. He sings about the "perfect" yet fearfull life of those who choose to live only by god. If you listen, you can hear the sarcasm witch drips from every word he sings.
I respect all kinds of religions, but this song is NOT about how good god is! :) Thought I ought to explain! ;)
I see a lot of people discussing what this song means ect. Basicly from the mouth of nick, firstly he dosn't state if he believes in god but simply says he has faith, like the great leonard cohen. For the song, it was written while him and his wife were on their honeymoon across the US and is not satirical but just illustrating the places he came across and how perfect they seem. There isn't any more deeper meaning so stop over analysing!!
@OliverBunce Wrong. I think you'll see that there are a waay deeper meaning for thos who care to look for it. Of course, you can say its no deeper meaning and be happy with it. But, if you look closely you'll see that thats not the case. :) I don't mean to be rude or anything, just felt like pointing it out! :)
@OnceUponAChat Oh, I disagree with that. Remeber the phrase 'god is everywhere?' I think this means that people like Mother Teresa got it, she was out with the poor & the broken (in India?)
...So much Beauty...if God Exists Mr.Nick Cave is a Wonderfull Prove of It :)...god's in the House:)...Pure Genious...a Dream nightmare :) Wonderfull Man:Mr.Nick Cave...I Do Thank You so much...:) Pure Love Peace Light
Listen to the lyrics: Any day now day he will come out: Oh i wish he would come out. It is saying that God does not solve everything. The place he is describing is a place that many christians find themselves which is: God Makes everything ok.
It is all up to one choise: Leave it all up to god or start to take care of your own life making choises you feel are in sync with your conciense. The easy way is to leave it all up to god. The hard and scary, though very rational way is to try to make the world a better place with your own potential, howewer small it is.
Very nice performance. These lyrics are hilarious, a perfect small town satire. And the ending line "God is in the house/ Oh I wish he would come out/ God is in the house" - pure Nick Cavish geniality.
Look ppl. this song is mocking God. its ridiculing all the ppl who think that just because they believe in God they are absolutely perfect. ever heard of satire? jeez lol
No that doesnt make you a nick cave fan. and nick cave has a very weird relationship with god. Hamster is right about the song. I am a huge fan of nick cave and Know his work extremely well.
im not denying that he has a relationship with god, but this isnt about that! Its about how people who are "close" to god seem to ignore all that is going on around them, even denying its existance, and just focus on their little bubble of christianity...
@Hamster3107 I'm too lazy to go down looking for the person who didn't get this on the first listen but Jesus Theodore Christ I can't believe you actually had to spell it out for some one! Good Lord Almighty this song is perfect in it's poetry and composition but also in it's little story telling from the point of view of an innocent 'well meaning' christian. This is amazing songwriting. Nick Cave at his best.
@Hamster3107 Mmm, maybe. However, I think the main idea here is that god's presence it totally absent from the world. The big cities are full of all the 'horrible' sides of life, and the pretty little town is a haven of 'goodness' but where's god? I'm not too familiar with Nick Cave's real attitudes to god and religion other than through his lyrics. Personally, I don't think he's a believer - he's too intelligent for that - but his is captivated by the emotional pull of faith... Just an opinion.
@Tapiola2007 He has swung, Dylan- like, between being a firm believer, and robust non- believer, or so the articles say. I think at the moment he has decided on believing in god with a small g, not "God" necessarily. I dont know. A pendulum is our Nick....
The house is the whole real yourself and God- if we wanna call it God- is always in the house. god is a part of whole of us and we are a part of it. It's a beautiful song.
I thought that the it's not 'Is he religious or not?' but that he wasn't, but now is...
His music has very dramatically changed throughout his career, showing this. Wasn't so religious as a younger man, but found solace with age... I might be wrong but that's what I'd always thought! lol
@trublig Er...You should read "And the Ass saw the Angel". And just listen to The Firstborn is Dead, or From Her to Eternity. The man is Old testament has hell and always has been.
Erm? I honestly didn't know. I mean, especially with Birthday Party, early Bad Seeds there's a lot of stuff that wouldn't go down well with most particularly religious people.
yeah, he definitely is religious. If you listen to the Nick Cave Triple J 'J-file' he talks about how he has given up arguing about God because he always loses - argument being logical and belief in god being implicitly absurd, ect. It's quite interesting.
Nick Cave is a devout Christian. In his recorded religious lectures, he has claimed that any true love song is a song for God and has ascribed the mellowing of his music to a shift in focus from the Old to the New Testaments. He does not belong to a particular denomination and has complained about how God has been "hijacked" by politicians. Thanks Wiki
its probably about how everything's not that great even if you believe in god. and just having faith isnt enough. and also about crapy god fearing politics. I think nick is religous
U based that on what? I think it's ridiculous to always search for another explanation. And to be honest the only indication that there might be another explanation for the lyrics or that he is being sarcastic is that he sings 'god is in the house, O I wish that he came out'. That's not enough.
I think it's just romanticizing living in a little religious town. And he is not religious.
haha I don't think you could really call nick cave religious either, i'm not sure that he's really saying it's neccesarily a got thing more talking about how conservative christians try to stick their heads in the sand and pretend it's all good and if anything new ideas or movements come along they try to block it's growth and stop it happening so that they can live in their "happy little town"
God is always in the house and he needs to come out so we can see who the culprit is- then he needs to be tried and hanged as in any good little community, the meek, the dispossessed and the stranger need to be branded and punished.
given any acoustic instrument always sounds nicer, you have to look at the size of the jools holland show. It's a big studio. It would be dwarved by the piano and acoustics.
The very wonderful Nick Cave..I just had to play this to Mrs me cos there was some woman on Jools Holland's Later doing this, & my woman didn't know that NC does it sooo much better!
A tetotaler is somebody who came off booze. so the tetotalitarianists would be the the people who get you off booze in a totalitarian schedule. Basically the people in rehab clinics.
nick cave smacks you in the solar plexus with his lyrics, raises the hairs on your neck with his voice, and my god - is that man ALIVE to feel and think all these things. the pain and the beauty.
I agree with rozella that music can be bent to your needs, The doors The end, can have many meanings. But this is the first time i've ever heard this, i dont even know this guy. soothing music. And i agree with lennycohenfan nice answer and i agree now listening too this.
Hey lokimlin! You. don't. know. this. guy?? Did I read that properly?? Or have I gone insane?? Oh dear oh dear. Please darling, check out more Nick immediately!! If you need help, I'll happily be your guide. And, yeah, lennycohenfan makes some righteously cool points! But, be warned, sweetness, not all of Nick's music is so soothing. The Nick fans among us must be laughing themselves stupid over that comment! But... yeah... pretty sure you'll dig him if you investigate further!!
It's an attack on hypocracy, moral certitude, and the willingness to impose conformity on others. It's an attack on the smug self-assusrance of liberal groups ("we have a woman for mayor" "our polilcy...is fair")) as well as conservatives. So why just pin it all on "evangelism" when the lyrics go way beyond that? Given Nick's heritage and where he has lived over the years, why see it only as a criticism of America? You are making the song "smaller" than it is.
It is a song! Free to interpretation and this was my initial interpretation and I stand by that.
I'm glad to be enlightened by your input but calm down.
Music should be free to individual interpretation regardless of the artists intentions and own feelings...that is what makes music great...we all find different meanings and attach different meanings to songs and that is a wonderful thing; in this respect Lenny it is you who is small.

Tetotalitarianists"
What a fucking line. Nick is the man.
trollfinger 3 years ago 5
yeah it's great, but what does it mean?
what is a tetolatitarianist?
oledapra 3 years ago
A tetotaler is somebody who came off booze. so the tetotalitarianists would be the the people who get you off booze in a totalitarian schedule. Basically the people in rehab clinics.
trollfinger 3 years ago
don't mean to pry, but do you think nick met people like this, trying to get over his (heroin?) addiction?
oledapra 3 years ago
Well I know the song is a direct reference to small country towns in America, but i think that's what he means though. those type of people.

The irony, the raw passion, the pain... this is what music should be... Nick Cave is brilliant.

I thought I was going to cringe for the rest of the song when his voice cracked, but he adjusted and pulled that shit together so impressively

I agree with rozella that music can be bent to your needs, The doors The end, can have many meanings. But this is the first time i've ever heard this, i dont even know this guy. soothing music. And i agree with lennycohenfan nice answer and i agree now listening too this.
lokimlin 4 years ago
Thanks. A good balanced answer. And it certainly is soothing.
Rozella20 4 years ago
Hey lokimlin! You. don't. know. this. guy?? Did I read that properly?? Or have I gone insane?? Oh dear oh dear. Please darling, check out more Nick immediately!! If you need help, I'll happily be your guide. And, yeah, lennycohenfan makes some righteously cool points! But, be warned, sweetness, not all of Nick's music is so soothing. The Nick fans among us must be laughing themselves stupid over that comment! But... yeah... pretty sure you'll dig him if you investigate further!!

A wonderful criticism of America and evangelism. Well done. Marvellous
Rozella20 4 years ago
ARe you serious?
lennycohenfan 4 years ago
Well Lenny, that is my interpretation.
What is yours?
Rozella20 4 years ago
It's an attack on hypocracy, moral certitude, and the willingness to impose conformity on others. It's an attack on the smug self-assusrance of liberal groups ("we have a woman for mayor" "our polilcy...is fair")) as well as conservatives. So why just pin it all on "evangelism" when the lyrics go way beyond that? Given Nick's heritage and where he has lived over the years, why see it only as a criticism of America? You are making the song "smaller" than it is.
lennycohenfan 4 years ago 5
It is a song! Free to interpretation and this was my initial interpretation and I stand by that.
I'm glad to be enlightened by your input but calm down.
Music should be free to individual interpretation regardless of the artists intentions and own feelings...that is what makes music great...we all find different meanings and attach different meanings to songs and that is a wonderful thing; in this respect Lenny it is you who is small.
