Deconstructing comedy isn't necessarily comedic. If anything, it often ruins comedy, in the same way that music journalism ruins music. It over-analyses something natural and wonderful, and as a result that thing becomes too objectively judged, rather than subjectively experienced. And as much as I respect the likes of Stewart Lee and Daniel Kitson, I feel this brand of comedy will always come across as pretentious because of how overly-analytical and theoretical it is towards comedy.
@Szaam Anything is comedic if it makes you laugh. Deconstruction is hilarious because it shows us why we laugh at certain things. Furthermore, it's one of the toughest things to get a laugh from. I've been doing stand up for five years and I've seen maybe a handful of people in the world do it in a funny way. You can call it pretentious, that's your view, but most people here find it intelligent.
@Szaam But some people *like* that kind of humour, because they have that kind of mind. It's never going to be universally appreciated, but it has it's place. Of course there will be those who attempt it but fall short, but done well it's something that I, for one, am grateful for.
@3rdAutisticCuckoo Of course, and I'm not being entirely objective myself, it's just how I think it comes across. I'd say that Stewart Lee especially is very university-accepted, in a simple sense. I'm at university now, and there's plenty of students who love to be pedantic and pretentious with anything they can, comedy being a great one. They don't represent Stewart Lee very well I'd say.
@Szaam Well of course there will be those who attempt this kind of comedy and fail, and university draws plenty of people who crave to be *seen* as intelligent. So they do what they think other people will see as intelligent, trying to impress them - and this is pretension. But when a comedian does what he/she actually finds funny themselves, the kind of thing they would want to see on a stage, then they know at least someone likes it, and maybe they'll find an audience who shares their taste.
The thing about comedy is that you can't tell another person what is, or isn't funny. They either think it is, or they don't. So all the people commenting that "He sucks/is a genius" That's an awesome opinion thank you. Each one of you is correct.
@tuaca1 Whatever you think of Stewart Lee. To say that his only material is deconstructing comedy is just wrong. He may use it but if you take the example of his comparison between living in the countryside and living in the city. That bit doesn't rely on the deconstruction of comedy at all and nor do many other topics he talks about.
@guildwarsSNOW it's hilarious how unfunny that was. I didn't even think this video was great and your little '100% funnier' suggestion was just embarrassing for you.
@CaptainSuperDeadly I am never embarrassed at pointing out the truth. Just because a guy is on stage pretending to be a comedian doesn't make him funny. The funniest thing about Daniel Kitson is that for an 'observation' comedian he is extremely unobservant. I don't pretend to be a comedian - it's not me up there on the stage - but by pointing out the most obvious observation about pidgeons makes me more funny by the very concept of observational humour - just watch Connolly on walking as proof
This guy is the best ever live comic act I ever seen when I was at Huddersfield University. I used to go to the student union for ever Comedy Club night and this guy was by far the best ever! He was wearing a Denis the menace jumper and those thick glasses. Had similar hair but a shorter beard. It was either 2001 or 2002. He was that good he did not just 1 but 2 encores for us! Couldnt remember his name till I did a search online on best live comedy acts.

completely unfunny - seriously, he picks a perfect topic to make fun and he blows it. Has he even seen a pigeon walk? The funniest thing about watching a pigeon walk is realising that it is permanently plugged into a heavy metal mp3 player... cue walking across the stage immitating a headbanging pigeon... voila, I am 100% more funny than this clown.
@coxmj15 yeh I have that problem, people tend to throw lettuce at me on stage. Went down like a lead balloon after being clobbered over the head by an iceberg. Still says alot about Kitson...
@saintlysimon wow, I wished I had a forehead as big as your's to write it on. It must have took you all day to think of that reply, I can just feel the brain's pushing your forehead to its max. I bet you must have a tattoo of it on your forehead, just in case your forgot your name. Although I am not sure how Tw equates to saintlysimon. I guess it must be a nickname... The W&(*ker
i don't get it.. why do people think he's funny? i'm a frankie boyle fan for fucks sakes, i've never misunderstood or disliked a good comedian but this guy? i don't get it..
@dljc1979 I don't understand, you're trying to establish your credentials for being a good jusge of comedy by saying you like Frankie Boyle? How does that even slightly follow?
@RanpatMcMurphy Unfortunately there is little footage of Kitson on the web, as he an illusive character and as previous posts have mentioned the footage that is available does not even come close to the heights his comedic genius has reached. The only way to really understand how great Kitson is, is to see him live.
RanpatMcMuphy, Its spelled Stewart Lee, if your going to slag Kitson off at least spell the other comics name right, im fond of both and they happen to be friends od each other too, know your comedy better before you make such comments.
@86robfarrow I really couldn't give two shits how to spell his name. I'll let people like you worry about such things. That's about all I have to say to you. Don't engage me again.
you @RanpatMcMurphy are a fool, this is barely a taste of the genius of daniel kitson, he does amazing spoken word and his stand up is hard to put in such a small time limit. his material in a full show is insightful intelligent and above all very very funny.
@hybridsounds85 I normally don't get involved with idiotic youtube exchanges. All I want from you is a link that directs me to a 'proper' example of his talents. I'll give him another crack. All I know is that from what I've seen so far, he's just another random shit blurting comedian. Nothing insightful and certainly nothing even approaching intelligent.
How dare anyone compare this half arsed comedian with Stuart Lee. I find that offensive. Why not compare 'One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest' with 'Troll 2'?.
i havent seen enough of him to rate him as highly as he,s rated, and i must say stewart lee is equally as good, but what ive seen of kitson makes me want more
Don't bother going to watch 66a Church road. It aint comedy, its theatre. I've seen Daniel Kitson 5 times and nearly died laughing during his shows. But 66a Church Road was really disappointing.
@sfa2 Don't get me wrong, had I been expecting theatre I may have enjoyed it, and though I didn't see the intermittable suicide show I reckon I would have enjoyed that. My point is that neither were particularly funny.
From my vain attempts at trying to find a decent current stand up comedian, he seems to be the closest to being one. I also like pigeons and have noticed their propensity to walk or run when they don't absolutely have to fly.
@triangl hahaha another little boy acts tough on the internet, wow how brave you are, LOL, actually ergo is another word for therefore, so i think it fits the sentence you fucking moron!
Sure is pretentious in here.

Difference is, Stewart Lee can't do comedy, only its deconstruction. Which makes him decidedly shit.

@tuaca1 De-constructing comedy and doing comedy aren't mutually exclusive, Stewart Lee does both at the same time and it is piss your pants funny.
