1 dislike... 1 person is an empty sack of protoplasm... Seriously. How could you dislike this song??? Just tell me? You dont like the bad ass guitar solos? You dont like the freakin' brilliant lyrics? You don't like the sweet drum lines? If you dislike this, you are dead inside.
One of the greatest albums EVER!. The one dislike? Probably a fan of Broccoli Spears, Boncey Now-els, Chrstina Applejacks or M'n-M. And the fact that they have fans is so sad.
This takes me back to college. I worked an all-night shift at 7-Eleven to help pay the bills while I went to school, and this song just feels like 2 a.m. after the bars have closed and the drunk after hours crowd has filtered through, and I am alone in the night. Special times.
Great song, remember it from early MTV, before it descended into the foolishness it is now! Several other good songs on the album as well. Shame these guys never followed up.
The chorus on this song kicks some serious tail. Love the key lick at 3:06. Makes the second chorus pop. Great vocal intensity on this song. Just a good listen.
The chorus on this song kicks some serious ass. I love the background-ish keys at 3:07. It's the only time he plays that lick out of the 3 chorus'. Too cool of a touch. Great intensity on the vocals in this song. Just a good listen, period.
The thing that always makes this song "stick" for me is the line about "Miss Christina". I used to work in Tulsa in the late 80's. And I used to see this very delicious female in a 944 on my way into town in the mornings on a semi regular basis. Plus the song always described for me what life was like at that time. One of my all-time favorites. I wore out three copies of this album.
@mogeroithe My Spanish teacher in high school was named Ms Christina and she was the cheerleader coach...I liked her and she liked me. Made her laugh so hard in class one time she had to apologize to the class...where has the freeken time gone...wow
It sounds amazingly current for these times. I remember the David +David album made fun of a lot of the crap in the USA during the mid-80s - and did it so brilliantly. Themes like Reagan, denial, phony idealism, drug addiction ...I could go on and on forever. I hate to be pessimistic, but we've come full circle.
This song sums up the 80's. More carefree. I know days were tough then but people pulled together. No such thing as cell phones, twitter, Facebook, Matt Drudge or political correctness. Life was more fun for me while in my 20's.
I used to drive to Tulsa from Fayetteville Arkansas to go to work when this song came out. I used to see "Miss Christina" pass me on the turnpike just before I took my exit. (Only she drove a Beemer, not a Porsche) This song reminded me so much of what I saw in Tulsa at that time. Glad I ain't there anymore.
I Graduated from High School in 1986...worked 2 jobs but still managed to party several nights a week with Friends......GOOD to be YOUNG and FUN!!!! Miss the 80's like all get OUT!! haha
@007BondgirlKarena I think that's awesome. I was just a six year old kid at the time... I can only imagine what it must've been like, being in High School with this tune. Goodness. What a great tune...
I Graduated from High School in 1986......worked 2 jobs but still managed to party several nights a week with Friends......GOOD to be YOUNG and FUN!!!! Miss the 80's like all get OUT!! haha
@AubrieWall it WAS a lifetime ago.. Makes you sad , dont it? But one thing you can take away is that, there is NO music like this anymore.... Sure, they talk about drugs. They talk about sex. But it it's a NEVER a freakin' masterpiece like this is. Just... absolutely, one of the greatest songs of all time...
@freakymantueffel ...could'nt say better....like a hit on my head so many years ago and today too...sorry for my bad english...that song shatters me...
Immediately following the December, 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake centered near San Jose but also effecting San Francisco quite heavily... THIS is What The most popular DJ in the Whole Bay Area decided to Play... something like 10 Times in a Row. Beautiful, everyone in the Bay Area got drunk, but you don't hear about that... the Earth shook then there was some yummy.
these 80's songs were the best at speaking of excess. sign of the times. people were really burning the wick at both ends, huh. alcohol and drugs were flowing and fashionable, almost cool. i wish i could go back, join a hair band, and party my ass off for a bit and then hopefully make it out alive. haha. but then again, none of us make it out of here alive, huh.
One of the Great albums of all time. One of the very few you can put in, listen to the entire thing and then do it again and again and again and again.................... loving it as much the 1,000th as the 1st.
"Handsome Kevin got a little off track...Took a year off from college and he never went back......" My old college buddies always sang that line to me mockingly after I quit college when this song was first popular. I hated life and school from '84-'86. Today, at 44, I'm happy, and worth about half a million. College is overrated (for me, that is)
Had a brand new turbo Laser w CD player and I kept this in the player for 6 months or more. If you like this one every song is fantastic. Lets have a reunion tour boys!
I heard this on Radioparadise in the last few months. Not sure I remember it from the 80's; not for any reasons mentioned above, that I recall. Seriously great song!
I really don't know what to say... other than just look at your own life and think about what''s gonna happen with you!... that happens to be your life.... do not come back to Daddy and say whatever happenned with me...or why did this happenned to me.
@johnnygrulez Even if Daddy/Mommy/whoever/whatever made you a certain way,if you stay that way,it's your own damn fault. Also, having a rough life does NOT give you the right to commit felonies. The right to throw your fist ends where someone else's nose begins.
I had no idea why discovering new music on college radio stations was such a big deal, until late one night, I got one of the stations in Atlanta by accident and THIS was playing. Just the day before, I'd read an article in People Magazine that named David and David as 'guys to watch". They never did record together again, but they DID produce albums for other people, including Toni Childs, who sings back up for them on the D&D track "Swimming In The Ocean".
they did record together quite a bit for another decade; they were both part of the Pasadena music collective that spawned Sheryl Crow's TNMC record and are both on the record. John O'Brien was a friend of Baerwald's, leading to the Leaving Las Vegas song, etc.
I found it when it first came out. Lived in Running Springs Ca. and painted all the movie stars vacation homes in Lake Arrow Head. I liked the whole album. Looked for it hear before but didn't find it. Glad I finally found them
I bought this album, it was my first album out of my first wages in 1986, I think boomtown got to like number 39 in the single charts here in the UK. I was making cassettes for Sony at the time which was pretty ironic. I was gutted others didnt like it as much as I did.
I loved this song when I heard for the first time back in 2003/4 and I have too say it speaks the truth. I lived near edmonton Alberta Canada when Alberta had its huge oil boom and this song speaks the truth about the habits and the drugs and death that enter any city that becomes a boomtown. Now I'm training too be a cop and this song's like my theme song when I work out and run my 5k a day.
I first heard this song in 1989 when I was 18. I didn't find out until I saw it on youtube that it came out in 1986. Somewhat a little ahead of its time. I just remember that when I first heard it, I was getting up to go to work and in that half-daze of conciousness, it always struck a sombre cord with me, giving me a taste of the rat race to come.
my all time fav song...i was 17 when this song came out....it was a very hard time in my life...abusive father and alot of home troubles and this song took me away from everything.....for some reason this song means alot to me
Reminds me of a much simpler times being stoned out of my mind. living with my parents with no cares of the world.Just partying all the time with my friends.now sober with my own Family and my friends are dead or moved on or half retarded still thinking it's the 80's
In a time when, Miami Vice ruled. It was a decade of excess and and we did not have all the worries we have today. It is a fond look back at the things that made us what we are today, if we survived!
3:49 "Well the ambulance arrived too late... I guess she didn't wanna wait."
Heartbreaking verse from an amazing song. I imagine some beautiful tragic starlet in L.A. losing her young life in this part of the song. Another lost soul in the City of Angels!
Always wished I was living the high life like David & David and hanging with movie, rock & TV stars, making the big bucks, living the high life and jet set lifestyle these guys were living!
Coming into Melbourne from the north at 5.00am, having driven all night from Sydney, driving through the endless suburbs until you hit the city proper, on a warm summer night, this song comes on the radio of the rental car, and mixed with stupified tiredness, turns the whole view through the windscreen into a big 3D video.. quintessential big city music.
@El135o Gold-top les paul, run through a tom scholz rockman through a Tascam 244 portastudio, through a fairchild 660, with EMT r2d2 reverb and boss delay.
Back in the day a common trait was to do it yourself or have a guitar tech install a micro switch just in front of the volume control that tied all 3 pickups together . sorry i'm old school when guitars were altered all the time.
Reminds me of my first real love.Julie, wherever you are, please know how much I miss you and if I could just see you again..I would tell you that you gave me chlamydia.
I was 19 in 1986 and worked the night shift in a distirbution warehouse. Half the guys were dopers who would leave work at midnight, do whatever habit until 6 am, sleep till 3 pm and be back at work at 4pm. At the time I was taking a year off college! This song was so fitting to those days.
@StelyDn ha, ha. I went back to college, got my business administration degree, got my first real job, switched companies once, havent missed a day of work in 20 yrs. Married for 19 years with a daughter. Dopers all got let go. No idea where they went after that. That was a fun yr though!
@lowbridgehit I also was 19 in '86. Was in college and HATED life & college. The line "handsome Kevin got a little off track--Took a year off from college and he never went back" was sung to me mockingly many times by the old college gang after I quit and never went back. Now, I'm happy & worth over half a million bux and I "ain't" through yet! Never have dealt dope at a Denny's, however, or any dope for that matter.
I came across my old D&D cassette and had no where to play it, LOL! I had no info about this band and find it really sad they only put out the one album-It was just way too good to stop there! Imo, those songs still hold up nicely today.
David and David kick Ass and Ass! They're Awesome and Awesome! I hate exclamation points!!

Reminds me of a much simpler times being stoned out of my mind. living with my parents with no cares of the world.Just partying all the time with my friends.now sober with my own Family and my friends are dead or moved on or half retarded still thinking it's the 80's

This is one my most favorite songs of the 80's.
In a time when, Miami Vice ruled. It was a decade of excess and and we did not have all the worries we have today. It is a fond look back at the things that made us what we are today, if we survived!

IMHO, best album of the 1980s.

Wish these guys would make more albums!

This song is sort of gritty yet fun at the same time. Sort of a " slice of a life" song .

fender strat, all 3 pickups on Boss overdrive , analog delay and chorus
baltecbrad 2 years ago 4
Hmmmm... so how does a guy get all 3 pickups to run at once on a Strat?
I think the neck pickup only, overdrive, delay, chorus, plus a lot of compression.
El135o 2 years ago 3
@El135o Gold-top les paul, run through a tom scholz rockman through a Tascam 244 portastudio, through a fairchild 660, with EMT r2d2 reverb and boss delay.
dfbaerwald 3 months ago 2
Back in the day a common trait was to do it yourself or have a guitar tech install a micro switch just in front of the volume control that tied all 3 pickups together . sorry i'm old school when guitars were altered all the time.

I was 19 in 1986 and worked the night shift in a distirbution warehouse. Half the guys were dopers who would leave work at midnight, do whatever habit until 6 am, sleep till 3 pm and be back at work at 4pm. At the time I was taking a year off college! This song was so fitting to those days.

omg so was i! lol book distribution
soulstice99 2 years ago 2
@lowbridgehit And where are you now, compared to then?
And, what happend to the Dopers?
StelyDn 2 years ago 2
@StelyDn ha, ha. I went back to college, got my business administration degree, got my first real job, switched companies once, havent missed a day of work in 20 yrs. Married for 19 years with a daughter. Dopers all got let go. No idea where they went after that. That was a fun yr though!
Good times.

@lowbridgehit This song rocks , doesn't it ?
vetch12 1 year ago
