Yep. Another person here who is considering upgrading to a 5d, because they are now in a more affordable price range when bought second-hand. Would a 5d be preferable to a 60d in terms of image quality?
Gordon im considering upgrading from my 40D and i know the 5d is very outdated now but my price range is kinda holding me back. Is it worth the upgrade or should i just upgrade my lenses? Thanks!
Hi gordon, i wanted to ask if the image qualities vary various production date of the 5d because i know that there are production model from 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, and apparantly from the 2005 model they had inferior lcd and dont have the anti static coating on the sensor. Would you say the image qualities would be lesser in the 2005 models.
I take it you mean sick in the not very well sense, not the cool way?! It was made a long time ago anyway! Forget this one and check out my newer videos!
@BloodBr0thers He's talking about the Canon 5d. The Canon 5D Mark II (It's successor) is superior to the 7 (full frame and 21.1. megapixels.) So yes you are right, but this video is 4 years old. So a better camera for weddings would be the 5D Mark II even though the 7D is newer.
@Concon0227 You don't wanna get a cheap dslr. They are an investment. I did that with the Canon XS (it's all I could afford and I needed one.) However, I was still shooting 35mm film alongside which made it very awkward to distinguish between the two. I would save your pennies and buy a full-frame dslr - not a bootomline eos dslr.
If you can afford the 5d mark II, you def should buy that one, since is far superior than the 50d or 5d mark I. If not, I think you should get the 50d, since it's more bang for the buck than the 5dmark I, in my oppinion.
hey, how you doing? i stumbled upon your comment here which is 11 months too late haha but i just bought myself a 50d. Dont you have an advantage with low light situations with a full frame like the 5d mk1? Plus wouldn't the pixels be bigger resulting in low noise photography at high ISOs? I was thinking down the line I will get a 5d (used) and keep my 50d as backup. What do you think?
You qualified the casing as a sturdy one on the 5D, it maybe better than any rebel but it's far from being as sturdy as the old 10D.
Don't get me wrong, I really appreciated the upgrade I made from 10D to 5D some 2 1/2 years ago but I also didn't regret keeping the 10D at hand for the 3 times I had to send the 5D for repairs, something I never had to do for the old 10D even if I've beaten the old one more.
To clarify, this video is designed to accompany an article at cameralabs . com for anyone thinking of upgrading from a Rebel to a full-frame model like the 5D. It's not a standalone review of the 5D like my other videos.
Oh they will bring the price down in three years time dude. you can always benefit on a 21 megapixel like the 5d m2 you just have to find out what, camera wont do everything for you.
I have been using the 5d with 24-105 f4L for 18 months. It's a great camera. Now the 5d Mk 11 is available I am tempted to upgrade to that. But I doubt 22mpx will be of any benefit in a hand-held situation - which is virtually 100% of my shooting these days, so I can't see an extra £1600 with trade in value being worth the trouble, or the cost. Come on Canon, make it worth my while by bringing the price down.
I am about to buy a 5D in the near future, with some lenses but then i had this thought, "will it be more clever to save the money for a Mark II and buy a single lens?". I shall also notice that i know alot about DSLRs, but i never had one - so if i buy 5D it is practicly, my first DLSR.

After all the speculation, Canon announced the EOS 5D Mk II on 17 September 2008. It looks like a killer, but still no built-in flash. The body RRP is $2,600 in the US (£2,299 in the UK), and the kit with the EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM lens is $3,499 in the US and (£3,049 in the UK). Why is everything so expensive here in the UK? You're not thinking of doing a video on the 5D Mk II are you Gordon?
No comparison monkey boy; 5D is a full frame and the new 50D still plain old .6 cropped sensor. Learn a bit about cameras before posting stupid comments.
Hi, everything you need to know about moving from cropped to full frame can be found in the article which accompanies this video - just click to the right of the video window!
thanks for the vid! why do "EF-S" lens can not use in a full frame sensor like eos 1d series and 5d? is the croping factor or the circuitry it self is the problem,(not compatible)Im planning to buy canon digital camera im a little bit confuse about this matter because Ive never tried the "EF-S" lens to atached to full frame camera before so i have realy no idea, thanks and more power!
It's basically because EF-S lenses are only optically corrected for a smaller frame size. And they also have a slightly different mounting which is incompatible with full-frame bodies. See our lens buyers guide under the lens section at cameralabs . com...
I have one question regarding the metering on the 5D. I was at store today here in Japan and have been testing the camera. I tried out a few shots on Manual mode and found that the metering jumped all arounde even if I were to pan the camera just so slightly. How accurate would you say the metering is on the 5d? (the metering was not set on spot, it was the most common one it measures 35areas. sorry I don't know the name for it.) thanks.
I'd say the metering is roughly similar to models like the 30D. So it's generally pretty good, but not quite as clever as Nikon's metering in tricky situations. You can see examples taken in fully automatic with the 5D in our 5D, 24-105mm and 17-40mm reviews at the Cameralabs website.
Thank you very much for your help on this. I have reviewed both of your lens reviews and it has absolutely helped me a lot!! I am really thinking about getting this camera but the truth is, I'm waiting for the new model for the 5D (mark II?) I know you get this question alot and again all we can do is guess but when would you say the next model for the 5D is going to come out? thanks again:)
Who knows?! There's basically two big shows this year, one in January and one in September - the latter is our next likely bet, but it may still not happen...
Hi, thank you very much for your reply. I am soooo desperate to get this camera but at the same time worried that a new model would be announced right after my purchase... By January, did you mean there was a show back in January or there will be one in 2009?
I've noticed some people (here in Japan) mentioning the exact number of shots their camera has taken. (i.e. 5,343shots) I was wondering if you knew a way of finding this out on any of the DSLR. (Is there a function for this?)
I have to disagree with you about the use of high end lenses, meaning the Canon "L" lenses. I've had my 5d for a month, took it on a photo shoot out of town with my non-L lens, the Canon 28-200 3.5-5.6, shot over 400 pix and I was soo impressed with the image quality. I also have two "L" lenses, the 16-35 and the 100-400 but don't like to travel if I can help it with them. I think this hoopla about Poor image quality with non-L's is propaganda by Canon.
What I'm saying is the full frame sensor can be very unforgiving on lesser optics. An EF lens which might deliver great results on a cropped body might disappoint on a full-frame.
Those are completely different cameras at different prices. The 450D is a relatively basic camera that's a step-up from a beginners model, whereas the 5D is a semi-pro model with a full-frame sensor. It depends how much you want or need full-frame. Read the article which goes with this video (linked to the right of the video) to find out more about full-frame.
Great vid! Very helpful! I have a question... I was originally going to wait for the 5D mark II, but I think I should go ahead and get my hands on the current 5D while the price is so cheap. So I'm going to buy one soon. However, I need to do some portraits for my girlfriend and I already have a 17-40 L lens, but don't really have a decent portrait lens. I can't afford the body and the kit lens of 24-105 or whatever it is. So, do you think a 17-40 on a 5D would be ok for portraits? Thanks
The 17-40mm is a great lens, but it's not ideal for portraits on a full-frame camera like the 5D - it's a bit wide even at 40mm. The best affordable portrait lenses are the 50mm f1.4 or the 85mm f1.8. If your budget it v tight, then there's also the 50mm f1.8, but it's not as good as the f1.4. Feel free to post on the Cameralabs forums if you've any more Qs!
What is the difference between the 40D and the 5D? I don't like it when the 40D is being referred to as a DSLR for "serious amateurs" or a "backup body" for professional photographers.I want a PROFESSIONAL grade camera that i can use confidently. Are the only true Canon professional cameras the EOS-1D's?
Check out the verdict page of our Canon 40D review at the Cameralabs website - it compares it against the 5D - also check our results pages for image quality comparisons...
A better (or more expensive) camera doesn't mean better photos. People just don't understand that. I'm sure there are some excellent photographers out there, serious professionals, that have shot world wide famous photos with 350d or even compact cameras. Sure, a 5d or 1d have very interesting features, for some kinds of photography necessary (speed for example). There is a very useful article on Ken Rockwells web site.
Cameras such as the 400d/40d have a sensor that is 1.6x smaller than one section of film. So when a picture is taken with this, some of the image doesnt record on the sensor, and because of this crop factor is alters a lens' effective focal length. For example; using a 10mm wide angle on a full frame sensor will produce a picture with an effective focal range of 10mm, as the entire image was captured on the sensor. However using a 10mm lens on a 1.6x crop factor camera, is will produce...
an image with the effective focal length of 16mm, as the image has been cropped by the smaller sensor.
To get the effective focal length, multiply the lens' focal length by the crop factor of the sensor. In above demonstration it would be 10mm x 1.6 = 16mm.
Hi, bear in mind many people are expecting a '5D Mark II' upgrade model early in 2008 - although this has not been officially confirmed, so may not happen!
How is the 5D's image quality compared to the 1D MkIII? I have used the 1D MkIII quite a bit but I think I'd rather pay less for the body and get some nice lenses.
I've not tested the 1D Mark III, but it's a lower resolution sensor and also physically inbetween typical APS-C budget sensors and full-frame sensors like the 5D. I think the 5D would probably have a slight edge, but the real decision between these bodies is whether you want 10fps, quicker handling and a built-in portrait grip, or full-frame with 3fps.
Thanks for the brief view. The 5D is marvellous. Im happy I upgraded from the 350D. Uses the camera with Canon 70-200mm 2.8 L-IS-USM. The shots I get with it is just fantastic.
Hi AmoreLui, they're quite different cameras really. The 5D has higher resolution, slightly lower noise, and the benefit of a full frame sensor if you want your lens focal lengths to be unchanged. The D200 has better features, is quicker, feels stronger, has a built-in flash, GPS connectivity, and is cheaper too. It's up to you!
Hi cameralabs, i dont care about the price.I want to buy it the one whos better, thats all it matters 2me.Whats ur opinion?Which one makes sharper images?Pls gimme some more details!?!! Thanx PS:if some1 would offer u for free a camera which one from these 2 cameras would u pick up ?
Hi AmoreLui, the 5D is slightly sharper, but only if you also give it a good lens. They are different cameras though, and it's like asking whether BMW is better than Mercedes. Both are very good, but are different! Check our reviews at Cameralabs for more details. I'd also advise going into a shop and picking up each one to see which looks and feels best to you. It's a very personal decision, but if you are getting it for free, maybe go for the 5D because it's worth more!
hi CAMERALBS(part2)Maybe theSharpness on the 5D is aBitBetter than200D,sharpness MeansNothing ifTheExposure andColor aren'tDead perfect.ForHuge prints 5d is better than200D.If iGet theD200 iWould getThe Nikon 12-24mm,if iGet the5D i wudGet theCanon 17-40mm L
Hi AmoreLui, I would agree with your comments and choice of lenses, although I think the D200 battery is fine! Ultimately it depends if you want a full frame sensor. If you really do, then go for the 5D. Otherwise the D200 is a better overall.
Hi Cameralbs !Why the batery on D80 works better than the batery on D200 ? cause at the end they use same bateries ?The batery on 5D works a lot better than the batery on D200,thats sad ! On 5D you can shot 800 instead on the D200 only 340 ? True ?
Hi AmoreLui, Wifi allows you to transfer images wirelessly. Note I can't always reply to messages on You Tube, so it's best to ask questions on the Cameralabs forums. There'll also be other photographers there who may be able to help.
Hi Cameralabs, What mean VR Lens ?...and what's the difference between Nikon 85mm f/2.8 PC Micro Nikkor Manual Focus Lens and Nikon 12-24 mm Lens ? PS:i made myself a profile to ur site, can u give me some tips on how to comunicate and ask questions on that forum?I never been on one so dont have experience on that...Thanx !
Hi AmoreLui, if I keep answering all your questions I won't have time to review any more cameras! To post a question on the Cameralabs forum, just create an account, login, click on the appropriate section, like Canon or Nikon, then click New Topic.
Hi Impu, glad you found the video and web review useful! If you're in the market for a semi-pro DSLR, I'd recommend waiting until March. This is when the annual PMA show takes place and many new cameras are expected. There may not be an updated 5D, but it's worth waiting to see what happens.
Thanks for your comments. The videos are aimed at consumers, but the accompanying reviews on the Camera Labs website have more detail for professionals! Hope you find them useful!
Great review, but you forgot to mention that the large size of the sensor means that the pixels are bigger too and thus have less noise at higher ISO speeds.
Hi Riflemanm16a2, glad you enjoyed the video. Yes, you're absolutely right about the noise levels being lower with the physically larger sensor. There's much more information about this and technical results in the full article on the Cameralabs website though. This video was designed to go with the article. I hope you find it useful!

Who knows?! There's basically two big shows this year, one in January and one in September - the latter is our next likely bet, but it may still not happen...
cameralabs 3 years ago
Hi, thank you very much for your reply. I am soooo desperate to get this camera but at the same time worried that a new model would be announced right after my purchase... By January, did you mean there was a show back in January or there will be one in 2009?
JD95 3 years ago
Every January...
cameralabs 3 years ago
Ok, thank you very much for your help:)
Another question if you don't mind answering.
I've noticed some people (here in Japan) mentioning the exact number of shots their camera has taken. (i.e. 5,343shots) I was wondering if you knew a way of finding this out on any of the DSLR. (Is there a function for this?)
JD95 3 years ago
I am wondering the same thing.

Nikon have come out with some gorgeous stuff but - even if i could cheaply swap al my lenses - I'd still prefer the aging 5D. Roll on the MKII...

An EF lens which might deliver great results on a cropped body might disappoint on a full-frame.

interesting, I read somewhere its other way around...

hey
if u cud choose between the
Canon 450D or Canon 5D
wat wud it be?
zniee 3 years ago

Thanks
Mordecai36 4 years ago
The 17-40mm is a great lens, but it's not ideal for portraits on a full-frame camera like the 5D - it's a bit wide even at 40mm. The best affordable portrait lenses are the 50mm f1.4 or the 85mm f1.8. If your budget it v tight, then there's also the 50mm f1.8, but it's not as good as the f1.4. Feel free to post on the Cameralabs forums if you've any more Qs!
cameralabs 4 years ago
Thanks so much!
Mordecai36 4 years ago
Another affordabe alternative is the EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM lens, It's not an L lens, but very sharp and the USM is quick.

PussyXpert07 4 years ago
Check out the verdict page of our Canon 40D review at the Cameralabs website - it compares it against the 5D - also check our results pages for image quality comparisons...

Jerry Ghionis uses a 5D and he is ranked one of the top ten wedding photographers in the world. And he shoots at medium jpeg.
Chris Fawkes, anouther outstanding wedding photographer shoots with a 5D and for several years shot with a 20D.
If guys like that can use these cameras for professional use then who can argue with that.
williampurnell 4 years ago 3
A better (or more expensive) camera doesn't mean better photos. People just don't understand that. I'm sure there are some excellent photographers out there, serious professionals, that have shot world wide famous photos with 350d or even compact cameras. Sure, a 5d or 1d have very interesting features, for some kinds of photography necessary (speed for example). There is a very useful article on Ken Rockwells web site.

the 5d is a full frame
dryan2 4 years ago
would u elaborate this technical term of full frame in a few more words? Thanks
chrisfam7788 3 years ago
Cameras such as the 400d/40d have a sensor that is 1.6x smaller than one section of film. So when a picture is taken with this, some of the image doesnt record on the sensor, and because of this crop factor is alters a lens' effective focal length. For example; using a 10mm wide angle on a full frame sensor will produce a picture with an effective focal range of 10mm, as the entire image was captured on the sensor. However using a 10mm lens on a 1.6x crop factor camera, is will produce...
flipwhiptofuf 3 years ago
an image with the effective focal length of 16mm, as the image has been cropped by the smaller sensor.
To get the effective focal length, multiply the lens' focal length by the crop factor of the sensor. In above demonstration it would be 10mm x 1.6 = 16mm.
300d/350d/400d/450d/40d/30d/20d/10d have 1.6x crop factors.
1dmkI/1dmkII/1dmkIII have 1.3x crop factors.
1dsmkI/1dsmkII/1dsmkIII/5d have full frame sensors.

Hi, bear in mind many people are expecting a '5D Mark II' upgrade model early in 2008 - although this has not been officially confirmed, so may not happen!
cameralabs 4 years ago
How is the 5D's image quality compared to the 1D MkIII? I have used the 1D MkIII quite a bit but I think I'd rather pay less for the body and get some nice lenses.
Snoochies 4 years ago
I've not tested the 1D Mark III, but it's a lower resolution sensor and also physically inbetween typical APS-C budget sensors and full-frame sensors like the 5D. I think the 5D would probably have a slight edge, but the real decision between these bodies is whether you want 10fps, quicker handling and a built-in portrait grip, or full-frame with 3fps.
cameralabs 4 years ago
True, the 10fps was very impressive and practical. I think the 3fps is fine for me, though. Thanks for the info, good review. Take it easy.
Snoochies 4 years ago
Thanks for the brief view. The 5D is marvellous. Im happy I upgraded from the 350D. Uses the camera with Canon 70-200mm 2.8 L-IS-USM. The shots I get with it is just fantastic.

nikon D200 is better than 5D canon ? What do you guys think ?
amoreLui 5 years ago
Hi AmoreLui, they're quite different cameras really. The 5D has higher resolution, slightly lower noise, and the benefit of a full frame sensor if you want your lens focal lengths to be unchanged. The D200 has better features, is quicker, feels stronger, has a built-in flash, GPS connectivity, and is cheaper too. It's up to you!
cameralabs 5 years ago
Hi cameralabs, i dont care about the price.I want to buy it the one whos better, thats all it matters 2me.Whats ur opinion?Which one makes sharper images?Pls gimme some more details!?!! Thanx PS:if some1 would offer u for free a camera which one from these 2 cameras would u pick up ?
amoreLui 5 years ago
Hi AmoreLui, the 5D is slightly sharper, but only if you also give it a good lens. They are different cameras though, and it's like asking whether BMW is better than Mercedes. Both are very good, but are different! Check our reviews at Cameralabs for more details. I'd also advise going into a shop and picking up each one to see which looks and feels best to you. It's a very personal decision, but if you are getting it for free, maybe go for the 5D because it's worth more!

HiCameralbs, both haveAdvantages and Disavantages.I think theD200 worksFar easierAnd faster than5D butThe batery ofD200 sucks,Instead the5D has higherTechnical quality andThe bateryWorks better on 5D than onD200.The commandDials of D200Are perfect: hard onThe inside andCovered inSticky rubber.The5D's dials areDainty, slippery hardPlastic. The in-finder numbersAnd indicationsAre much moreComplete andLegible in D200.

What do you think about my new comments ?
Can you agree or dissagree with anything ?
Can you suggest me anything?
PS:please read both parts of my new comments !
amoreLui 5 years ago
Hi AmoreLui, I would agree with your comments and choice of lenses, although I think the D200 battery is fine! Ultimately it depends if you want a full frame sensor. If you really do, then go for the 5D. Otherwise the D200 is a better overall.
cameralabs 5 years ago
Hi Cameralbs !Why the batery on D80 works better than the batery on D200 ? cause at the end they use same bateries ?The batery on 5D works a lot better than the batery on D200,thats sad ! On 5D you can shot 800 instead on the D200 only 340 ? True ?
How can you comment ? Thanx !
amoreLui 5 years ago
The battery life you quote is from the manufacturer, and it depends how they measure it. I cannot comment. Sorry!

Hi Cameralbs , can you please explain me what means Cameras with WiFi Builtin?? What that WiFi thing does to a camera ?
amoreLui 5 years ago
Hi AmoreLui, Wifi allows you to transfer images wirelessly. Note I can't always reply to messages on You Tube, so it's best to ask questions on the Cameralabs forums. There'll also be other photographers there who may be able to help.

Hi Cameralabs, What mean VR Lens ?...and what's the difference between Nikon 85mm f/2.8 PC Micro Nikkor Manual Focus Lens and Nikon 12-24 mm Lens ? Hi AmoreLui, if I keep answering all your questions I won't have time to review any more cameras! To post a question on the Cameralabs forum, just create an account, login, click on the appropriate section, like Canon or Nikon, then click New Topic.

Great Review!! I am glad I ran across this video. I also learned about your site. I am in the market for a 5D!
impu 5 years ago
Hi Impu, glad you found the video and web review useful! If you're in the market for a semi-pro DSLR, I'd recommend waiting until March. This is when the annual PMA show takes place and many new cameras are expected. There may not be an updated 5D, but it's worth waiting to see what happens.

Good review for the typical consumer. I would like to see a review aimed towards the working professional though.

Thanks for your comments. The videos are aimed at consumers, but the accompanying reviews on the Camera Labs website have more detail for professionals! Hope you find them useful!
cameralabs 5 years ago
Great review, but you forgot to mention that the large size of the sensor means that the pixels are bigger too and thus have less noise at higher ISO speeds.
Riflemanm16a2 5 years ago
Hi Riflemanm16a2, glad you enjoyed the video. Yes, you're absolutely right about the noise levels being lower with the physically larger sensor. There's much more information about this and technical results in the full article on the Cameralabs website though. This video was designed to go with the article. I hope you find it useful!
