  • Thank You , I needed to hear, that what we got, is still alive. I found that in this music

  • This song did appear in a movie.

  • Wow!! Now I may have to go see this guy here in Dallas this Friday!!

  • @voicetube Hope you were smart enough to go see him. LL & the Large Band one of the best shows I've ever seen.

  • and Lyle doesn't just sing about being a cowboy. He is a real Texas cowboy!

  • Wow...ive known about this guy and have heard his name a 1000 times...but never, ever listened to one single song he's recorded in the past 25yrs....till tonite.....good stuff!!

  • purest form of magic

  • This is my baby song. This was played when i was just in my crib, constantly played when i was a tumblr. It's practically my childhood's theme song.

I just looked it up for the first time.

I don't know the words, but i know the tune, because i've always known the tune.

Now i can't stop crying because my childhood just keeps coming back all over the place.

  • Played this at my dads funeral. Awesome tune.

  • Saw Lyle and John Hiatt at the Rialto in Joliet Illinois. Just Lyle and John and two guitars on entire stage. Most amazing show ever!!!

  • i saw lyle for the first time about 10 years ago with bonnie raitt. still a big fan of both.

  • A legend..

  • I love that he said it could never be in a movie, and it was a large feature in "The Interpreter" with Sean Penn and Nicole Kidman. HA!

  • This is the sexiest man alive

  • even better live !

  • I don't think any body needs to bash either artist! They are both talented musicians that have brought amazing music into our lives. Everyone just appreciate it for what it is and stop beating up on each other. Although I can't believes someone disliked this. :)

  • I SEEN HIM OUT IN PHOENIX HE WAS AWESOME 20 SOME YEARS AGO HE'S THE ONLY SINGER I WOULD EVER PAY TO SEE AGAIN

  • Tonto he was smarter, and one day said Kimosabe..Kiss my ass I bought a boat and I'm going out to see... classic

  • Too Compare Dave Mathews to Lyle Lovett is just plain wrong .

I'm sure Dave is talented but Lyle is is another league entirely

  • @mdwo01 So true.

  • i really like this song

  • No one has to create a brainy sentence about the dislikes, because no one dislikes this !

  • Why would anyone argue and compare DM to LL ? This is why music sux today, most of you don't have a clue, and you buy and /or listen to whatever commercial radio shoves down your throat. When this song came out, it was played on radio! Yes, you could turn on your radio and some kick ass music would be playing. DM covered this song because he knows great music. Oh by the way, LL & DM are completely diffrent styles, both are wonderful. Educate yourself on the arts for god sake!

  • brilliant

  • im related to this masterpeice!!! yes thats right im related to lyle lovett!

  • love lyle!

  • So so so underrated. I saw him live at the Wilma Theatre in Missoula, MT and it was one of, if not the best, concert I've ever been to.

  • I love the images he paints with his lyrics. "Kemo sabe, kiss my ass I bought a boat I'm goin' out to sea," is one of my all-time favorites. Wonderful pedal steel.

  • Thank you, Lyle.

  • Thank you for posting. It gives me goosebumps.

  • Some songs play out like movies in your head, this one puts them all in the rear view mirror.

  • Thank you for posting. Lyle is great in person, a real gentleman and a great songwriter and I love this song.

  • From this song I fell in love with Lyle in 1987. Opened live in Boulder for Bonnie Raitt. Magic. Pure, pure magic.

  • This song is my mantra when I'm stuck in a stressful situation, or just somewhere I'd rather not be. "I'm on a pony on a boat. I'm on a pony on a boat." Yay for Lyle Lovett!

  • i see all my Episodes TV[.]UsNetxxx[.]com

  • What a voice !

  • I did not first hear this song until I saw the move The Interpreter with Sean Penn. Great song.

  • For Mario

  • We saw him and his Large Band in Tulsa last night. I'm a rocker, this was my first country show. I'm converted to Lyle Lovett.

  • @PawneeBill47 just "thumb-upped" ya. i'm a rocker too. he's more folk than country to me though (more along the lines of van morrison/ townes van zandt/ [or even] david gray), but with "texas country" overtones. LIVE though, my God in heaven, he is one of the BEST i have personally ever seen. how far into the show did it take for you to get mezmerized?!

  • @griswaldNhtown Roughly 3 minutes. He and his band are very talented. We see three/four groups with regularity when they are in the area. The Doobie Brothers top the list but LL has been added. Great show, great humor, great music!!

  • Amazing talent...Amazing song

  • OMG the best Lyle Lovett song ever!!!!

  • kiss my ass I bought a boat

  • I wanted to go out on the lake with you. I still want to. I can make it happen, we can go on a fishing trip with my friend.

  • Its just his "Natural Foorces" .......If I was forced to pick a gender of music to listen to for or the rest of my life I would say what ever gender lyle lovett is!

  • @fukifino100 do you mean "genre" not gender hahahaha

  • I believe that he wrote this song when he was just 14 or somehing like that. It is about all the things that 14 year old boys think about at that age, so perhaps it's better not to look too deep into the lyrics and just accept that this is a brilliant and beautiful song. No wonder he is the legend that he is.

  • Way to deep for me to follow. Maybe too much wine. But a nice tune.

  • Cosmo Kramer

  • Who cleans the boat?

  • Me. :p

  • ...ha ha....this song isn't about a boat and a pony...it's more about Tonto telling the Lone Ranger to kiss his ass, "I'm outta here."

  • Lyle is the only band I know that can combine R&B, Country, Folk and Rock all into one package......love DMB but they are no comparison to Llye's much underrated talent and genius. Harumph!

  • I'm not sure why there are DMB comparisons?

  • ahhh, He did a cover, NM....

    God Bless ~Amy

  • Hey!! I didnt get a Harumph from that guy!!

  • @THB79 give the governer a harumph....

  • @1theombudsman

    You watch your ass!!

  • Lyle wrote the song. He's more talented than DM could ever dream to be!

  • @sl8u5ch Dude, they are both talented. And Dave has written some amazing songs. The problem I have with Lyle is that many of songs sound the same. Compare If I had a Boat with Song About Sonya.......

  • @sl8u5ch I think they both have different styles and both have good qualities. To say that is a little harsh don't u think?

  • @sl8u5ch Well, I'm a much bigger Lyle Lovette fan than Dave Matthews fan, but Dave is ridiculously talented in his own right. I just think he needs to stick to his originals. His covers do not impress me.

  • @sl8u5ch Hardly. DM is way more talented.

  • @sl8u5ch 1 for 2 with that statement.

  • @sl8u5ch DM is one hundred times more talented than lovett. look at the songs hes written and compare them to lyle's. it's not even questionable. lyle should be honored dave did an awesome cover of his song

  • wrong.

  • WOW! I think he is definitely my new favourite singer! His voice is amazing! Such great storytelling in his songs!

  • Sang this song in a karoke competiton, and I won the night ;).

  • @RDKF13 CONGRADULATIONS!!!!!! I wish Ii was there. Have you heard his lights of L.A. county song? Love to hear ya do a cover here WOOO HOOO!!!

  • must be a damn big boat if he can ride a frickin pony on it

  • @Nukle0n NUCKLE LOL I Love to own one with a k in the front though, but you can build a boat as big as you want if ya got the MULLAH!!

  • I'd really like to Lyle and his friend the cello player solo. The large band just gets in the way.

  • it's funny his voice sounds so young, while he is in his.. 40s or 50s?

  • I can't articulate what makes this song so magical and so evocotive of such strong emotions. I guess it's capturing a childlike musing viewed from an adult perspective. Or something...;-)

Damn, If I had a boat I'd head on out to Texas. And if I had a pony we'd go listen to ol' Lyle. Me upon my pony on my boat. I'd LOVE to see Lyle & his big band! Stop off in Tyler for briscuit so good it'll make you slap yo' mama, hit Austin for a couple days scoping out new bands & bliss out to Lyle!

  • tyler? me too!

  • The simplicity and wonder of the dreams of childhood.

  • I would ride that Pony.

  • i would ride that mystical boat

  • I'm going to try and say This in the niceist way I can. I Love Julia Roberts.... BUT As an actress Julia will never hold a candle to Lyle as a musician. His imagination and the scope of his craft isn't even close to Julia's in her craft.

  • You my friend are 100% correct. I share your viewpoint.

  • Very nice song. Pedal-steel guitar is awesome.

  • Right back at ya. I love a pedal steel played that fine.

  • I got to see lyle lovett her at jones hall

  • "Kiss my ass I'm going out to sea..." Yes, indeed.

  • I had a boat before Hurricane Ike. and I heve Lyle pony!!!

  • If a saw Lyle playing live..i would be so happy!

  • pure love!!! from dallas formally from the the Great city of Houston!!!

  • Lyle...pure class

  • I wish i had boat. We will be on the rockn-roll boat next with Lyle Lovett and Gaelic Storm.....
