Isn`t Pauliina Lerche (her second name wasn't Lerche those days) the one, who holds a puppy in her hand which has the word "Pauliina" on her forehead, written on a band of rubber?
Isn't the young lady on the left of the washboard player, the same one who is in the Seelenikoi,
Aijo, and Oi Dai videos? On the right side? Many years later? Love this band, I know maybe 10 words in Finnish. Wonder if washboard playing started in Finland. Cajun bands and Jug bands here in America sometimes use them.
@MinerWalt Yes - could be indeed her. At least according the info on Värttinä's web pages she was already a member at that time. As was also Janne Lappalainen who thus could be the clarinet (?) player, but he just doesn't look like him to me. Also Lassi Logrén was a member at that time but I'm pretty sure he is not either of the guys here.
@EneriGiilaan Pauliina Lerche (née Luukkanen) should also be present in this line-up. She was about eleven years old at the time so my guess is she's one of the girls on the left flank.
@MinerWalt Yes you might be right about Pauliina also - I just can't tell who that might be, if anyone. BTW I just noticed that at the very begin and end of the vid you see a guy sitting in a chair with a bozouki like instrument - that could/would/should be Janne. But why is he sitting - some injury?
I think I recognize Sari (with triangle) and Mari (accordion) and the rightmost singer (beside the washboard player) looks quite like Minna Rautiainen. Wonder is there anyone else from the 'adult' version of the band? Or any other ones that became professionals on their own. At least the violinist seems to have some potential.
Hyvä suomalainen meininki! Kun elämänkokemus on tunnelmallinen ja kulkee omia svengaavimpia (siis kaikista toimivimpia) kohtia pitkin, niin syntyy jotain tuontapaista...
@prosperitycraft To me the accordionist looks like she might be her. I also checked the Värttinä website, and it says Mari also played accordion in the early days.
@synkyb Thanks! Yes, I was thinking that the accordionist looked a little like her. Thanks for checking on her bio on their website...I coulda done that, I guess :-P
This is just what I was searching for! Niilo Kopenen speaks the Karelian dialect of Finnish, and served in Karelia during reconstruction after the second world war. He received a PhD from Harvard, has been a leader in education, Alaska government, and founded the Chena Ridge Monthly Meeting of Friends. I would like to find a way to share it with him in the Pioneers Home, Fairbanks Alaska. Jim Baldridge
Isn't that puppy really a doll?!

I don't think this has anything to do with Värttinä. It's a traditional Karelian folk song. :)
And in the war time they made a variation of the lyrics about "shooting the Ruskie between the eyes". Haha.

Was this Värttinä when they were younger? I don't understand Finnish, but what a happy song--I like that.
