I still get a caffeine buzz from coffee and I used to get a nicotine buzz from smokes. Both chemicals give the brain a little dopamine rush, so YES, they can still be considered a gateway drug.

After the water all runs out you take the bowl off and inhale the smoke. I prefer gravs, because I always pack the bowl too deep on waterfalls and end up putting the rest of it in something else.
