No one better to replace Jan Akkemman than Catherine. This guy has so much feeling play his guitar. His work on "Focus con Proby" is a great exemple. Long life to Focus!
i REALY DON'T LIKE aKKERMAN HE SEEMS LIKE HES DOING A FAVOR TO PLAY WITH FOCUS LOOKS BORED...AAND HE'S NOTES ARE NOT VERY CLEAN,tHE SOUL OF fOCUS AND "FRONTMAN"WAS CLEARLY THIJS VAN LEER,aS GOOD OR PROBABLY BETTER THEN AKKERMAN AS A MUSICIAN BUT WITH CARISMA AND STAGE PRESENCE...TO ME HE COULD LEAVE ANYTIME.tHIS pHILLIP GUY IS VERY GOOD.
Akkerman is my favourite guitarist, but Thijs never plays with bad guitarists. PC is ununderstated, like Stephen Stills, but superb in his own terms. Have you heard Thomas Blug (Thijs plays with him too)? Give yourself a treat.

@avs002 was it you that posted the original video of this line up playing 'angel wings'. i believe this is the video but the wrong tune is dubbed over the top. it used to be on utube, any help much appreciated!
Interesting track. I hadn't heard this tune before although I was a Focus fan in the seventies. It's a bit reminiscent of Mahavishnu Orchestra material.
But the video has clearly got nothing to do with the music that's playing.
Thanks a lot for posting this. The vid is from the OGWT Feb 76. The actual track is well worth hearing - as it features what is for me, the most interesting and complex guitar run ever played in a rock context. This is great too. I prefer the M'Focus era, it's less overblown and smoother. Seen them live twice recently. Not too bad as far as playing, but the sound balance!!!........ truly awful.
Yes, what you hear has nothing to do with what you see. Watch the drummer crash his cymbals and there is no crashes in the music. Watch the keyboard playing licks at 3:59, and you don't hear that in the music that was put with this video.
Syncing? LOL ! I'll go one step further. This video is NOT the song that you hear. Watch the Bass player at 4:12. Actually, the whole tune really. The video from the beginning to about 4:50 is in a TOTALLY different tempo. The band is playing a fast tune on the video and the audio is of a MUCH slower tune than what you see. No, it's a matter of putting the correct audio track (song) with the video.
System will not accept my comment on Marcus' clip.
So I'll put it here:
"(Marcus' clip is) Amazingly 'close' to the version as performed on BBC 'OGWT' Feb '76, and then featured on 'Focus - Live Legends'; a CD I bought in the US in 2007. I've compared them both carefully: the CD version 'fades out' abruptly, as Bob Harris 'came in' right 'off the back' of the last note on the original 'OGWT' TV programme. Brilliant track!!!"
'Angels Wings' OGWT Feb/Mar '76. Please see my comment on: 'Focus - Angel Wings Live in 76 w/Phillip Catherine' provided by 'marcusvdgg71', in August this year - that's much closer to the version I prefer.
Philip Catherine´s solo from 0:56 soooo true what he tells .....truuuuuuthhh, love, nostalgia , ALL at all....That is, what I call sensitiveness! It is no secret that he spent one year with FOCUS (1976/77)
Wow what a gem this video is! Fantastic sound! What a groove these guys are in!! A chance to see one of the great guitar players. The great Philip Catherine! Thanks Rob Tullius..........
Oh it's Old Grey Whistle Test! The FM radio broadcast put me off.

Thank you for posting. Fascinating, not heard before, very progressive for the time, almost freeform jazz.

Saw Jan Akkerman live, to me one of the best guitarist in the world. Focus without Akkerman is no Focus

Synching is always problematic but this is still a live track, since it sounds very different from the recorded version.

Clearly the soundtrack doesn;'t belong to the clip.
This is the theme of Jan Akkerman's tune Floatin' on the '77 Jan Akkerman album. I wonder who actually composed it.
