there needs to be more videos of the sicarius hahni, that spider really creeps me out. Would love to see a similar video with one of those. However I've heard they're near impossible to find.
likely not, but i dont claim to be an expert on this type of spider, it took humanity, especially in Australia, many years before they realized the Wolf Spider wasnt a killer of humans, where most of the bites in those cases were likely Redbacks which ARE fatal if not treated, Redbacks also abound in Australia, same as Wolf Spiders, but all the poor Wolf Spiders can do is give a mildly painful bite yet for years they were accused and killed after claims that the Wolf Spider bite killed people
Just to continue, the reason being is not that these are arboreal or even aggressive, they are not as such, although they will climb bark etc just not glass and obviously bite if provoked. However, the precautions needed to keep for example, Pokies, is absolutely needed here. The speed of Sicarius spiders is unreal! Again, I would say that it is absolutely essential to have experience with such creatures that cause for you to be on your toes. This is one genus that doesn't forgive mistakes!
I think all Sicarius have similar level of potent venom. It does concern me that these are available in the hobby. I very much hope that here in the UK atleast, they get put on the DWA list ASAP. All we need is for some dimwit to get one, get bitten and die, that would give the whole anti-arachnid keeping lobby a major ace card to ban the hobby out right. Anyone thinking of buying these, please don't unless you have vast experience with aggressive true spiders and arboreal Old world Tarantulas.
The American species that have been tested are much less potent (on paper at least) then the African species, but as it stands no one seems able to give a detailed citation on the human bites for any Sicarius sp.
You don't really need a detailed citation and I'd hope for the victim's sake there is never one, though I would agree that it would help as the two reported bites were never really vailidated. Tests on a rabbit from a S.Testaceus showed tissue necrosis, massive sudden drop in platelet count which can cause unconsciousness and organ failure, and hemorrhaging. Even if these symptoms are exaggerated due to the test subject and its size etc bottom line is that the genus carries very potent venom.
I kept a specimen of Sicarius hahnii for a few years. They are a long living species (15 years in laboratory conditions) and fascinating to watch them burying themselves (hence the name 'self burying spiders).
But beware as already said they are deadly. The venom of S. hahnii causes severe hemorrhaging of the heart, liver and lungs within 3 hours!
these spiders legs closely resemble of the brown recluse. i wonder if Sicarius has only six eyes too.
Two distant but related species that uniquely have necrotic venom and are different from any other genus. Primitive , but highly dangerous spiders. Very fascinating. I would love to know how they both evolved.
well you fail to realize something here: even if they were related to the infamous Brown Recluse, the fact is, Brown Recluse bites will only have an extemely small chance to kill you and ONLY in the case you have deadly Allergic Reactions to it, their venom alone is not capable of causing human death, however it does create a sickening bite wound that can take up to 3-4 years to fully heal, the venom of the Brown Recluse rots the flesh, theirs isnt a Neurotoxin, so no Organ Shutdown
because they live in the desert where they hardly come into contact with humans, no anti-venom , and if it was defensive enough and bite their bite makes a recluse look like a daddy long leg.
They have neurotoxins and hemotoxins in their venom, some experts say that they are the most venomous spider known. They are not very aggressive and prefer to run. If you did get bitten there is a very high chance you could die!
Considering the poisons this thing has though, I'd never keep one as a pet. I'd have nightmares if it got out and I couldn't find it and it hurt me or someone(thing) else.
Where do you get these species?? I always want more exotic species and i'm trying to find dealers but it's very hard. That thing is amazing, I have over 40 different species of Arachnid right now and i'm adding to my collection.
This spider is very dangerous. Its poison eats your flesh away and it leaves permanent scaring. I think its cousin is the brown recluse. It sure does look like the wandering spider from Brazil but not as agile. I would love to have one of those as a pet but unfortunately all we have here are black widows. I'm pretty sure this cave spider is native to in your area. Where are you from?
This spider looks really strong and agile. The arachnid equivalent of Carl Lewis. I wonder if this species jumps as well? Would it attack humans? At least tarantulas seem a bit lethargic!! I could run away from a tarantula! I wouldnt fancy my chances against this!!
Exceedingly DANGEROUS spider........thank goodness it is not usually anywhere near human populations. The research papers I have read indicate indeed Sicarius sp. venom is microlitre for microlitre the most dangerous in the world to humans.......
Also known as the 6-eyed crab spider. The venom is said to be quite lethal (no anti venom yet)..perhaps exceeding that of the Brazilian Wandering Spider!
Spider barely caught shit. I hate seeing cameraman edge the kill towards the killer, I want to see the spider come out and actually get it

Man, these have to be the creepiest spiders I've ever seen. Just the way they move and the meatiness of their flesh...

You could technically consider these giant recluse spiders.

The mealworm was innocently sniffing around, then the spider popped out of nowhere and shoved it up her face. Funny shit.

Sicarius species have necrotic venom which could rot your living flesh YUCK
Black Widow - have neurotoxic venom which could shut down your nervous system
Jumping Spiders - Harmless and very cute FTW :D

So. After it catches it's prey does it just hold it till the venom dissolves the insides or what?

the venom makes the prey's insides into a soup

Then i noticed it was going to the abdomen.

I think spiders can be scary because they have such long legs, and their movements are so fast and precise.
It also makes them pretty darn cool in the animal world.
