  • i think this should colour restored by the colour recovery process.

  • saw only bits of it dialogue seemed to take from twilight zone episodes zero budget big on psychology but yeah those inescapable Rock eyes had me refusing to watch the rest. the screeching violin and faux bars didnt help either

  • This ended with the man having his eyes erased by Marianne and shouting at the children, 'I can't see'.... frightened me to death, I must have been about 10 when it came out.

  • i pissed the bed after watching this. Its the stones with eyes that got me!!!!

  • Read the book titled Marianne Dreams by Catherine Storr. What happened to the ending of Escape Into Night? Did they not finish the series?

  • @sus754 Yes, all six parts available on DVD.

  • I thought I was the only one who had been disturbed by this as a child! almost thought I'd dreamed it, it's been stuck in my head for almost 40 years & never knew what it was. everybody remembers the same bit! ......"the light......." SHUDDER!

  • This must have played in NZ in about 1975~6 when I was 8 too. It's amazing how many people have the same recollection: the scariest show ever, one that's stayed with me for my whole life & one that I thought I'd never know the title of. I swear some of my nightmares (usually trapped in stairways that don't make sense) even now still contain echoes of this show.

  • Ive been trying to find this for years - why doesnt ITV+1 or some other repeat these amazing chilrens programmes - I missed the last episode and have wondered ever since 1972 what happened at the end - at least now I know the name of it- Thank youxxxxx

  • @MsJules49 I too never found out what happened! I remember the girl was stuck in the house on her own and each night those stones got a bit closer. Did she escape? It's only be bugging me for 39 years! Damn! I should sue for post-traumatic stress :)

  • @MsJules49 Available on DvD

  • This was far scarier than Children of the Stones, it was just out and out horror for kids.

I was 8 when this was on but still remember it vividly

  • Commonly people forget the title. I can't appraise the overall impact it's absence for so long has had on people's complete appreciation of this show. Anyway I live in Birmingham. This was partly filmed at Barr Beacon, the highest point in the West Midlands. The copse behind the monument is where the house was built. Every journey passing by invites a recollection: it's 1972 again, i'm seven years of age and i've never enjoyed being terrified so much.

  • From what I remember it was a lot more spooky than the 1988 movie 'Paperhouse', and it had a far better ending.

  • Only beaten for creepimess by the 1977 HTV series 'Children Of The Stones'.

Funny how both have 'weird stones' in them!

  • Looking for the name of a TV programme or possibly a film where a wedding dress features.

I have tried to find out what this scene was for over 30 years. A wedding dress in a tall glass case in a corner of a Victorian

old ladies room. The very old lady is sitting in the room and warns a young girl who is admiring the wedding dress, not to open the case .

But the girl does behind the old lady, and when the air gets inside the dress falls to pieces..

It is NOT Mrs Haversham in David Copperfied

  • from the days before childrens TV linked up with junk food

  • Marianne should have drew an elevated platform leading from the upstairs window to the lighthouse.

  • This ranked up there with "The Singing Ringing Tree" for surreality and scaryiness.

  • excellent spooky nostalgia! great days...

  • Why my parents let me watch this stuff I'll never know.

  • this series was so creepy, i cant believe it was 1972! and i still remember it,,,,those stones were so errie with their eyes.

i could never find or have seen it since then, was great finding it now, sad it be a short clip, but it helped my childhood flood back none the les,,,cheers.

  • @jackscal1 It is available on DVD.

  • That was a seriously scary show!

  • OOhhh!! I still get goosebumps watching this and I'm much older now!! lol. It's scary seeing the rocks when their eyes open. What an awesome series - thanks to the creator and to sambda for posting this treasure!!

  • is that a young sandy from crossroads?

  • I remember this vividly! The stones with eyes and they could move-- I didnt know what it was called until now-thankyou for posting this!

1972.....was it really that long ago?

  • @radioianj Scared me silly when I was a kid. Loved it!

And it was far better than the movie version 'Paperhouse'.
