I came on here wanting to make some comment on the pure beauty of this music, but quickly realized that is beyond the capabilities of any human language. This transcends everything we know, and everything we will come to know. How this can possibly be the work of a 23 year old man is beyond me. Truly magical.
Great song by van the man, nice to see you can get more content on you tube instead of vanmorrisoncom. Got the feeling a few years years back listening to Back on Top that he was a wee bit anti net, think he's not so nowadays.
also suggest look up and locate "For What Was Gained" by McKendree Spring.. a great bookend to this tune.. both touch my soul, and both will be played at my funeral
I predict this song will be a hit! Geez, fantastic lyrics: "If I ventured in the slipstream, between the viaducts of your dream, where immobile steel rims crack, and the ditch in the back roads stop----" Where is that?
it is simply impossible to over-estimate this album, and then when u read the slap-dash way it came about and was recorded it becomes a wonder, a miracle...
Had this for 40 odd years on vinyl, cassette, CD and mp3............ don't listen to it often, but when I do, it's always right. It's a transcendental masterpiece and all the more so by being put together by a 23 year old.. It came from somewhere and it'll be around forever.
Words cannot describe this song. Thank u so much Van for being the genius and legend that you are. Cannot wait to see My Baby at Belfast Odyssey 03.02 (tomorrow night in fact). Roll on. To Be Born Again
I have now listened to this song every nite before I go to sleep for the last 3 weeks, and it's still perfect. Thankyou Van Morrison for being the man
I don't know why this song gets to me like it does. Somehow, it reaches deep into the heart, and wrenches out the emotions that I have been trying to bury. And despite the tears, it gives me hope - despite all the crap in my life right now - there is hope - In another time, in another place, in another land, so far away. Not an afterlife, not the next life, but tomorrow - there is hope in tomorrow. And that gives me the hope to get through today.
I love how this song isn't about anything except life. No matter the situation I'm in when i listen to it i can feel the true emotion that Morrison is trying to convey. It's not a feeling of happiness or sadness, but just the feeling of how understandable life can be, while also being a complete mystery. A feeling of Awe doesn't do this feeling justice.
@nobreath181818 ..Hi there..the guy is a complete mystery..everything is right,no matter which angle you view it from, lyrics, vocal, music it all happens as it should..the fact is only he can put it together..and he doesn't want to know fame and couldn't give a toss whether anyone likes it or not..which makes me love him more.
The top comments have nothing to do with this song-when will you all start to venture into the slipstream between the viaducts of your dreams---show pictures on the walls, whispering in the halls, pointing a finger at.......... lookin' straight at you comin' through......to where the ditch in the backroad stops...to where silence ceases to be born again.
Sheet, people are stupid. It's embarrassing in the first place to have to read arguments on the internet, but the misspellings just drive the whole shamefulness on home. Why don't you all stop for a second and appreciate the absolutely magnificent music playing in the background of your fourth grade dick measuring contests. Van the Man and Astral Weeks, that's what matters.
@DingoWrestler " When i was 5 years old, my mother told me happiness was the key to life. when i went to school they asked me what i wanted to be when i grew up. i wrote down "happy ". they told me i didn' t understand the assignment. i told them they didn' t understand life " - *John Lennon* %>}
Along the same lines as a last meal, I asked my friend the one song he would want to listen to before he died. He immediately replied "Astral Weeks." I think that's a damn fine choice.
I wonder if van has been invited to the music awards being held in his home town of Belfast next month, so far i havent heard his name mentioned, for all i know the could have him lined up for a lifetime achievment award concidering he has sold more records than lady gaga katty perry and snow patrol put togather you would think the organizers would have invited him but for all i know he could have been invited and declined, i will wait and see????

@12321Walrus There's no need to be a dickwad. I was listening to this song online when i heard the girl died. sue me for having a fcuking heart! "out of all the celebrities...you choose her" really?! A mind is a terrible thing to waste.
@neldarh Didnt mean to come off as a dick. Although i can honestly see how you could have. I just mean like, she was a ridiculous waste. Sure she was talented, but she died from an OD of like horse tranquilizers and a ton of other ridiculous stuff. Its a shame she did that to herself, but it was almost inevitable you know?
@12321Walrus I understand what you are saying but you have to understand that this girl was the quintessential addict.
In their natural state, no living thing wants to die; survival is instinctual in all of us, so when we do things that put our safety in jeopardy, it's because we're feeling not-so-good about our selves.
I didn't know her and i wasn't a big fan, but just imagine how sad it must be to die alone...
@12321Walrus You've just proven a point i made the other day when this guy said he couldnt understand how the same people who were listening to "great music" were being complete tools on the comments section.
To which i said: "humans are far more complex than you would like to think. just because one can appreciate and enjoy this lovely song does NOT mean that they are incapable of the most sincere forms of douche-baggery at times."
@neldarh You can't go round 'dedicating' songs to people - you a fuckin DJ or something? When you put up your own stuff on whytub go ahead and dedicate to Buzz Aldrin even but don't go riding on spaceodysee0's tails man.
@aribbonit dude, i don't know where you anger/hostility is coming from but, if it makes you feel better, i'll take it. i hope tomorrow is a little bit better for you, than today.
@neldarh Hey - I'm not angry or hostlitity. Just saying fella! - You need to quit all this 'amey winehouse tweeting' stuff - this is a fukin man the van page man.
Theres whole heaps of amy pages - go tweet THEM up
@aribbonit a few things; 1) you're clearly angry. 2)WTF are you even talking about?! what "amey winehouse tweeting"? I'll tell you the same thing i told the other ass-clown: I don't go around dedicating songs to dead celebs; that's not the first thing on my mind when i get up in the morning. I happened to have been on youtube listening to this song when i found out that she had died. it made me sad (because i'm not a tool) so i decided to express my feelings in that little gesture; sue me!! smh
@bud3dharma It's not a competition. Both gave art to the world. Whether or not you appreciate the art is your own business, however, I don't think it's out of reach to say that each life should be respected. Nothing lasts forever. Be grateful for what you have and what you had.
I first heard of this album when I saw on the list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, and I was curious to find out why it made it so high on the list. So I bought it, and when I first heard this song, it was like I was hearing heaven. So much beauty and imagery in only seven minutes, that's amazing.
I can't say it better. Still my fav of all time. It was Van's Opus. I'm not even a huge Van fan...but this will always be more dear to me than anything I've ever heard. It was recorded in 48 hours. He hired a buch of jazz musicians, sat in a little booth by himself and told them to play how they felt. Rare magic.
The philistines who hear my posting won't get this album - the only one I have is still on vinyl - this one. I woke up craving food and van Morrison. I haven't listened to him in a while and need this.
The sixties and seventies are still feeding my soul after all these decades. Pure creative and imaginative joy. I'm going to paint listening to this on headphones. The whole album is verging on the transcendental. Thank you.
Together with Jungleland by Bruce thiw song is one of the best i ever heard

@neldarh You can't go round 'dedicating' songs to people - you a fuckin DJ or something? When you put up your own stuff on whytub go ahead and dedicate to Buzz Aldrin even but don't go riding on spaceodysee0's tails man.
Showin no respect aii.

Theres whole heaps of amy pages - go tweet THEM up

aribbonit 6 months ago
@aribbonit a few things; 1) you're clearly angry. 2)WTF are you even talking about?! what "amey winehouse tweeting"? I'll tell you the same thing i told the other ass-clown: I don't go around dedicating songs to dead celebs; that's not the first thing on my mind when i get up in the morning. I happened to have been on youtube listening to this song when i found out that she had died. it made me sad (because i'm not a tool) so i decided to express my feelings in that little gesture; sue me!! smh

2. I am not angriy. - I'm just telling you off for moaning about dead unrelated singers to the singer van morrison on the van morrison page
4. you should start up some 'gaylords who aprreciatne amey winehouse moaney poof ' society

@bud3dharma It's not a competition. Both gave art to the world. Whether or not you appreciate the art is your own business, however, I don't think it's out of reach to say that each life should be respected. Nothing lasts forever. Be grateful for what you have and what you had.

The Bio of this song leaves me speechless. How this one man brought it all together. Van Morrison is BRILLIANT.

lennydylan 7 months ago
@lennydylan rankings are all a matter of personal preference. I personally think Sgt. Pepper is overrated and Astral Weeks owns it any day
weezadam 7 months ago
@weezadam Who mentioned Sg.Pepper, the greatest album ever made is Bob Dylan's Blonde on Blonde.
lennydylan 7 months ago
@lennydylan
I used to think that way also
I was wrong
you are wrong
Blonde on Blonde is good
but its NOT tops
Dylan should have been more selective
all great writing requires great edtting

@osvie01 Right you are, my friend. Transcendental is the best way I've heard it described. Personally, it's the closest I've ever been to heaven!

Rare magic.

He was only 18 when he recorded this.

Thank you.
