WHO THE FUCK CARES ABOUT BACKING TAPES OR PRO TOOLS!they fucking toured him to death and thats that!get over it.he was the best replacement for perry and still is.journey also grew alot with him.besides theres not a band out there that does not use pro tools every now and then.i liked the guy and he had a awesome stage presence.
This is not live . His voice was in very bad shape on this tour . He is singing to a backing tape most of the time . The times he doesnt you can cleary hear the difference . Just listen at 4:52
This song is pretty awesome...Arrival in its entirety was a great album..reminded me of Journey of the 80's Augeri does an excellent job....though in this vid he looks like he put on some weight...lol
It's obvious Steve was singing to a backing tape . But to be fair he didnt have much choice . His voice was in bad shape from over touring . It was either this or not tour
Journey did not overtour during the Augeri years. They toured maybe the most 7 months out of the year and not everyday. It's a excuse the Wigglers always use.
you'll notice on the live 2001 dvd, that his voice is a bit jumpy on the high notes singing it, and that it sounds like he's struggling. Here the high notes sound effortless and are hit bang on. This is 2005 aswell, so to improve after 4 years at his age is unlikely, so this recording is clearly a backing track. It's a very hard song to sing and all, but they were right in letting Augeri go, it was clearly too much on his voice.
For what it's worth, they isolated and pro-tooled the vegas vocals and put him mike-on, mike-off as necessary. They actually started pulling that stunt before the Generations shows and used it predominately throughout '05 and the UK/ Euro shows of '06. I don't expect the diehards to ever accept it (or 'hear' what is obvious) but having kept in touch with guys who worked with J in the Augeri era (and before) I know what went on, and why.
I believe it started during the detour tour 2004 That's why Deen was starting to sign some of the higher registered songs. You are right the Augeri wigglers will not accept it. At that point they should have started to look for a new singer. Don't need to give reasons why this happened Salmacis99.
Irrespective of Steve's ability or strains on his voice, this song (like so many) is heavily layered with vocals. Like so many bands, without the use of extra backing singers it is impossible to recreate the complex vocal arrangements or power on stage unless done with a vocal backing track for certain parts, as is done here. It has nothing to do with whether or not he could sing, the track would have been there anyway
Just a word for viewers out there- if you think that most bands today are playing "totally live", then you're nuts! The public wants to hear album quality live, and artists more often than not give them what they want. Go see Def Leppard or Aerosmith some time- their vocals are more canned than Dinty Moore Stew!
Augeri didn't lip all the songs. I've seen a boot from Generations and when they want you to hear the big hits or songs he is going have trouble with, they turn him on/off as needed.
sjb,,,,,i think ur very right,,,,,the 2001 dvd live is to the t ,,,,i think alot of bands do that,,,,,,turn them on at the ends of songs to keep the audience honest.....
Lipped. You can hear the Vocals kick in..and at the end Augeri actually starts to sing the last lines of the song and realized it cuts off and has to muster up enough in his lungs to get through it, Poor guy.
Yep. They isolated and pro-tooled the vegas vocals and put him mike-on, mike-off as necessary. They actually started pulling that stunt before the Generations shows and used it predominately throughout '05 and the UK/ Euro shows of '06. Ok then- let's hear the 'why'. It's been dodged all over the place, so let's hear the reasons.

but the problem is that there's a track with the same melody he's supposed to be singing, and i think that's what we're hearing as his voice.
joshuacurtisswenson 2 years ago
from looking more of it, it sounds like Augeri is just singing along, but to a tape

whoever thinks this is LIVE needs to be shot. It's too perfect to be live, billieboy. Come on man. Its sooo sooo soo good, too good.
mikekawkz 4 years ago
i dont think it is lip synched, or 100% live. it is probably over dubbed.
laddieola101 4 years ago
Someone took the vid and added the sound from the 2001! I don't belive journey did this!
billleeboy 4 years ago
