Could anything be worse than what happened after the overthrow of Lumumba? About half a century before there would be another free election, a rich country destroyed by the west's erstwhile favourite Mobutu, and the horrors of civil war. Regardless of the cold war political rhetoric Patrice Lumumba was a brave patriot with worthy ideals of independence from the dark Belgian colonial record. The question that can never be answered if he could have avioded despotism.

It's a shame that leaders serve their OWN self interest instead of that of the ppl. Since Lumumba was FOR the ppl, he was deemed a threat by outside pwrs, and sellouts amongst him as well. Like most of the leaders, they only want to uplift their OWN ppl/tribe while the rest starves and suffer. With that, a continuing viscious cycle of rebellion is always eminent. @cirethgr8 Say what you liek about me i dont care but the fact is that Lumumba was a soviet frontman. They even named a university after him the year the province of Katanga was forced under the rule of the central goverment of Congo previously run by Lumumba before his assasination by the belgians and the CIA. History has a way of perverting things. Most people who i once thought were noble humanitarians are acctually frontmen for hidden agendas. Proof after all the efforts of the UN in Congo..

Just because he had a vision of a unified Congo and possibly many nations on the continent, if not the continent entirely, he was a communist frontman for the soviets. Mobutu found power! Mobutu the mass murderer. Great job UN really helped those ppl. So why would the communist USSR name a University after an anti communist Politican... does not make sense. What does tho, is naming this university after a man whos life was taken for the cause of the communist movement. That makes perfect sense!
