Mine does that too. She'll only go in the water as deep as she can stand. If she can't touch the bottom, she just jumps around and watches the stick float down the river. I know she can swim cause she has fallen off the dock into the lake a few times but she freaks out.

Love it....My Boxer took 7 years to love water - we never lived near any that i'd let him into. When we emigrated we had gorgeous beaches near us and wow did he enjoy the last year of his life - he loved the beach for the endless supply of large logs, the odd tire hahah. He swam out so far he'd go underneath, Id panic but he'd paddle back. He also dunked his head in to get good grip on the sticks He'd come out soaked, ready to do it again. Sea water is also a natural flea repellant! :)...

Question for other Boxer owners: Do you think it would be o.k to have a Boxer if I work mon-fri 9 to 5:30?I would be able to take the dog out for half an hour before work everyday and then again straight after work. I don't want to get a dog and then realise that this isn't enough for the dog. Any helpful comments would be much appreciated. Thanks

it's to many hours. the boxer wont like it and your house is gonna get destroyed, 4-5 hours is okey. half an hour walk is not either enough, 2 hours a day for a grown boxer. I would wait if I were you.

We have a pontoon and go to the lake almost every weekend in the summer. Our male Boxer is similarly timid of the water. He'll wade in as long as he doesn't have to swim. I figured he was just a wimp and one day I nudged him off the edge of the boat. Long story made short... I had to go in after him and I won't nudge him off again! He does love to ride on the boat though, at speed he protrudes off the front of the boat like the bulldog emblem on a Mack truck.

Boxers have short hair and natural oils on their skin to compensate. They have a natural aversion to water like cats (clean their coat like cats too) because of this. You really shouldn't get them wet unless you have to.

Not really. Of the 4 boxers I've had & the 6 my parents-in-law have had, only 1 wouldn't go in water but she was 3 by the time she came to us from rescue (given her history, she'd probably never been in any sort of water before).

Introduction to swimming at proper age using positive reinforcement works. Just rinse out salt from ocean or chlorine from pool; use a shampoo w/ fatty acids for dog fur monthly. It does not hurt their coats.
