  • The guy with the spade at the end looks like a tough old bastard

  • @Dollymix001 Totally agree with you on that... he talks as if he is still on the scene...

  • Both Germans and Russians used their spades to kill each other in hand to hand combat. When they were fighting each other in a small confined building, constantly moving from room to room, a rifle would become obsolete, and a machine gun too clumbsy, the best weapon is either a grenade, a pistol, or a spade!

  • The Russian who used his spade to kill the enemy is bad ass. We all owe him a debt of gratitude. I pity the Germans who had to face him in battle.

  • 08:59

This Man is a real Hero!

  • You can say all you want about politics and governments. Ain't nothing gonna change only the faces same old chit diffirent channel.....................

  • 6.5 million tons of explosives were dropped on Vietnam...

  • If you liked this doc check out "Stalingrad" again, another BBC production lay out in progressive story telling. "Red Empire" is another excellent, lengthy series as well as "Blood on the Snow". I've also got many Soviet productions and find them quaint, what with their overt propaganda seen a mile away. Fascinating to get the different takes on facts.

  • 1)Germans( Nazi) GUILTY :attacking Europe-Africa, atrocities crime against humanity, crime against Geneva convention, no regard for human lives, raping, stealing, and killing 6 millions jews + gypsies and other civilians, Motive to rules the world with his allies primarily Italy,Japan, Turkey,Romania, Africans etc etc read the WW2 documented campign and history, 2) Russian GUILTY: Crime against humanity, against his own people, crime against Geneva convention many more horrendous crimes,USA GoodGuy

  • 5:25 Ceausescu Father?

  • @PskovIsKool You clearly have not been listening to this film. It constantly mentions the suffering of the Russian people. Even an extreme nationalist should be able to realise that! Or maybe you cannot understand English and just make a silly assumption.

  • thats sick they leaved human remains on a mountain, get it and put it in a grave:

  • fantastic doc,thank you!

  • it was amazing for the natzi brutal bastards who killed without discrimination, and bombed civilians. the germans should not be a viable "nation" and should be obliterated.

  • @mochompy like russia cleaned out dissidents during the 1930's? hear of the gulag? they did crimes just like the nazis.

  • @mochompy OOOkay, since WW2 the US has propted up at last count ..dozens, yes dozens of dictatorship that tortured and murdered their own population. You have also through you own Wall street's greed and government compliance sent the entire world into a recession and hardship. Guess what, the good old US is the modern day world bully. Does that mean the US should be wipted out???

  • @Spindry96 since 1917 communism has MURDERED over one hundred fifty million people and counting and ENSLAVED billions of people. the cause of the most recent recession is the excessive spending on WELFARE through socialist programs that DO NOT WORK. the national debt is for liberal, progressive communist programs that DRAG the overall economy down and debt maintenance caused by borrowing capital that has yet to be generated.

  • @SocratesTheGadfly l agree Communism has cost many lives, so has Capitalism during the Cold War but that war ended 20 years ago and we still see America acting as the global bully. l live in a country that you would classify as socialist with it's welfare programs but guess what we have low unemployment and a tripple A rating. Even we face the reality that globalisation has meant much manufacturing has gone off shore to Asia. Add in aging population and the future isn't looking that bright

  • @Spindry96 yes well perception is a very funny thing. i specifically remember during the 1990s when the taliban was MURDERING people in afghanistan and degrading women the leftist socialists of the world had an outcry and calling for action ( specifically The United States of America should act was the implication ) and The United States of America did act AGAINST al qaeda and the taliban. the women in afghanistan are much better off now without that oppression yet you label.....

  • @SocratesTheGadfly Ah yes Afghanistan another senseless Vietnam.. Despite the money poured in, despite the deaths when the US leaves it will revert back to it's former ways. Pretty pointless really

  • @Spindry96 .... The United States as being a "bully" because we DEFENDED our country and did it through JUSTICE. such thoughts and actions PROVES that liberalism is a mental disease and specifically it is schizophrenic. whenever there is a famine or crisis in africa the world community calls upon The United States to do something ( ie give money or aid ). I really do not care which country you live in but when you are INVADED again do NOT call America, defend your own country!!

  • @SocratesTheGadfly The US invaded Iraq not because of WMD's or to overthrow a dictator but to put Iraqi oil exchange back on US dollars. After Pol Pot was deposed by the Vietnamese the US gave Pol Pot weapons and money for many years. Even my country a democratic and strong friend of the US the CIA funded the opposition party and pressured our intelligence angency to find ways to depose the elected government. America is run by the 1% rich establishment and don't give a fuck about anyone

  • @Spindry96 The US did not supply Pol Pot. It armed 2 other factions, one led by Sonn Sann and the other by Prince Sihanouk, who were in an alliance of convenience w/Pol Pot.

  • @sonoki82 Not true, even in 1973 the CIA was selling arms to the KR in what they called a "Third option". In 1987 Special Forces U.K.Pappy reported he checked on three arms flights on behaf of Congressman Bill McCollum, the cargo disapeared. He later discovered that the arms were split between Sihanouk forces and KR forces. The state dep wanted to keep the KR happy incase they took back power. At this time Pol Pot was flying around Thailand in a state of the art helicopter

  • well NEVER know the truth...

  • Russians spammed.

  • MIRZOYAN JAN ! tsavet tanet !

  • I was stupid..i joined the army thinking i was to fight terrorists..all I learned was that I was to be a "red coat" ...young men with a few AK rounds and a rocket or 2 taking pot shots at tanks and bunkers is hardly a threat to the usa..its a natural responds to an occupation.and to declare them terrorists because they seek revenge for the killing of a family member or a friend is false...fact is.terrorism is funded by our own god damn" leaders".The real threat is domestic, not foreign.

  • @NWM11Bravo Where you were deployed?

  • The human race on earth is dangerously insane and will destroy itself as long as the masses allow the few to rule the many...Hitler,Stalin.Churchill,Hirohito,Roosevelt /truman Mussolini ,ect...only had power because people give themselves away...Hitler once mocked the masses saying ''What luck for rulers that men don't think.'' want to end war? want peace? THEN DONT COMPLY...DONT FIGHT...EVERYBODY SAY NO!...but people dont think..they get swept up by propaganda and idiotic false pride.

  • @NWM11Bravo we need leaders other wise it'll be anarchy

  • I am amazed at the fascination of the russian veteran when he's telling the story of how he was chopping up germans with a shovel.

    O_o

  • @RmanDC - or squeezing a tomato is what it reminds him how the german used to bleed when he stabbed them

  • i respect the russians , when you defend your country , all means are necessary the day you die billions live that's how life goes.

  • VIVA Mother Russia

  • Oh my god for haven's sake they are bombing the city are they killing civilians? or maybe a MOSQE or 2.

One of the most tragic chapter's of our human civilization, let's hope it will not repeat with with ISLAMIC towel heads which they have been in war with the western civilization for centuries.

Thank you for posting this excelent one of the best informative documentries I have seen.

  • @ny6900 your uncle hitler would proud of you!

  • Great documentary!

  • What kind of country doesn't bury its war dead with honour, even found 60 years later, but just leaves their bones lying around the fields in which they gave their lives?

  • Hey look, a bunch of dumb comments. I'm too busy watching the video to give your agenda even a rudimentary look. :)

  • great video footage...as an overview of the eastern front. battlefield is great for focusing in on one particular battle. this one depicts a lot of extra declassified content

  • "...Now it was man against man. What counted now was your discipline and strength..."

  • @EuroNetWelt Speak English BOY.

  • @Caracalla23 Fuck English BOY

  • We discuss death in statistics; Merely Numbers. We must remember than each was a human being. Each had people who loved him or her. Each had talents, moods, senses of humor. Some played the piano. Some were excellent cooks. Each had hopes and dreams. Each seeked family and happiness and had beliefs, feelings, fears and emotions. Let's never reduce human beings to mere "numbers". Are YOU just a number?

  • @randy95023 "A single death is a tragedy; a million deaths is a statistic." Joseph Stalin

  • @randy95023 hahah I wonder if you feel the same about innocent lives lost all across the Muslim world. People are being killed in the thousands but some singer dying makes more of an impact on western society. Its pathetic.

  • @Azamspazam91 - Unlike a lot of my fellow Americans I feel just as sad for a Muslim that is killed or injured, (or loses a family member or friend) as I do for a White Christian. Even though I'm a Christian I value a Muslim life equally with any other person's life. Most people irregardless of faith or race just want to live their life in peace and not be bothered by outside political forces. Love your children and teach them to love others, regardless of faith or nationality. Peace, Randy

  • @randy95023 Muslims are extremely frustrated. The ocean of knowledge and guidance that Islam provides has been hard to establish since the fall of the Ottomans.

Most westerners don't realize that Islam has been brutally suppressed in muslim majority countries for the last 60 years at the hands of pro-Western puppets like Mubarak. It sucks being raped by countries in the West and then being accused of terrorism for protesting this abuse.

I agree; We must teach justice and peace. Salam

  • @Azamspazam91 Just saying that I agree with what you said, but protesting should not involve either A. The killing of civilians, or B. The killing of western soldiers

  • @MrShocktrupr as lupe says

"Now you can say it aint our fault if we never heard it

But if we know better than we probably deserve it"

We see European powers carving up the middle east to preserve their imperial interests and ethnic cleansing in palestine but we remain silent.

When you see rape happening and you don't stop it, aren't you a co conspirator?

Muslims actually thought well of America in the 60s. Then Israel became a Cold War ally and our relations have never been the same.

  • @randy95023 This is what happens when dictators rise to power. Also how chilling it is to see the german propaganda use 'Ride of the Valkyries' while bombing Stanlingrad, similar to Apocalypse Now movie based on the Vietnam war

  • @SoF333 I don't think that the connection was intentional in Apocolypse Now. And if so, so what? It's better known from being from Apocolypse Now then anything else: I've heard of American tank crews playing it when their tanks crossed the border into Iraq, and American Black Hawk pilots play it when they're conducting airborne operations in Iraq/Afganistan. Just my two cents

  • @randy95023 No

  • Anyone truly interested in the Battle for Stalingrad should read Vasily Grossman's account in "A Writer at War". Grossman was there for the whole battle and crossed the Volga 12 times to file reports. His writings are fantastic, poignant and poetic. Very human, Grossman wrote in a poetic style about the life of the common soldier.

  • @randy109 -Continued- Vasily Grossman wrote for "Red Star" (the equivalent of the USA's "Stars and Stripes") the newspaper by, and for, the common soldier. Grossman stubbornly refused to join the Communist party and was often in trouble because he told the unvarnished truth. NKVD didn't get rid of him because he was SO popular with the common soldiers and civilians.

  • That old Russian that was part of an assault team is such a BADASS! XD

  • germans lost stalingrad because the russkies just had too many men, wave after wave, one million of them, coming every hour, i mean how can you beat them back?

  • germans should have just crossed the volga and keep going deeper into russia. go deep not wide.

  • And what are you?

  • german bastards

  • "...They dropped more than 1000 tons of bombs on the city."

Strange to think that this massive bombardment is very small compared to the enormous tonnage dropped on Iraq and Vietnam.

  • Would that equate to one single Kiloton bomb?

  • I know! 1000 tons is a drop in the ocean compared to say "linebacker 2" in 'Nam.

  • Well, 1000 tons of bombs dropped on a CITY has a different effect than 1000 tons of bombs dropped on a COUNTRY.

It is to be expected that bombs dropped on a country would be greater than bombs dropped on a city.

  • The total tonnage dropped by the Germans on the Soviet Union is still much, much less than that dropped by the Americans on Vietnam or Iraq.

  • Yes but bombs dropped on cities where concentrations of civilians lived over a period of mere weeks and months doesn't compare to bombs dropped on largely rural areas over several years.

  • I believe that the amount dropped on Baghdad or Ho Chi Minh City over a period of a few weeks or months is still greater than that dropped on Stalingrad. I can provide statistics.

  • @constipatedart

Yeah, technology allowed for that difference.

  • As one of your great poets once said, there are three kinds of lies: Lies, black lies, and statistics.

I'd say a significant proportion of the tonnage of bombs dropped, not in Vietnam as most would have it, but in the Vietnam war (which has North-Vietnam (NVA) subordinate to South-Vietnam (Viet-cong) and even Cambodia and Laos (Ho Chi-Minh trail). Besides from horrific civilian slaughter, no military gains were made. The US Air Force acted much like Göring's Luftwaffe. Bombers don't win wars.

  • provide them dick head. U and I both know that thier is a differnce in whats going on in the middle east and what went on in staligrad show shut the fuck up!!!!

  • @constipatedart Vietnam is a lot bigger than Stalingrad.

  • @constipatedart We're talking about 1 city and bombs dropped in the mattter of days. In todays comparison F-16s carry 6 250lb air to surface missiles. It would take over 8,000 of these missiles and 1,500 flight sorties to get 1,000 tons. Can you imagine any city in the world withstanding this kind of barrage?

  • @constipatedart

What was your point with this post?

  • FACTUNTHJU i love your commentary bro you are sooo fucking right.

  • I like the way the Soviet solder describes using his entrenching tool in hand to hand combat starting at 8:57 you have to really admire a soldier like that.

  • This documentry is FASCINATING and i never knew such a documentry existed, coz the yanks or brits were not involved spielberg missed this one out...but maybe thats a good job......too many jew/yank heros chewing gum for my liking, and there is no room for e t or jaws.

  • Comment removed

  • you are soo right

  • so Stalingrad was never rebuilt? or are they just showing sections of the city?

  • Yea Americans are doing a good job fucking up the real view of WW2. But they can't hide it forever. More people are starting to see. Like me.

  • If our reward for winning was endess wars and money for Israel and endless Speilberg movies vilifying Germans I think we should have stayed out or even supported the Germans.

  • snapped,i wrote my comment before i read yours......well said

  • Spielberg vilifying the Germans? You mean like Germans were really nice, but Spielberg showed them to be vile? Stop smoking weed bro.

  • why didn't the Germans just surround the city and destroy it completely from the air and with artillery?

  • becouse the attacked yougoslavia so the recrutment was late 6 months

  • Because they couldn't. They were cut off by rivers that were defended on the other sides. It would have been a mass of cross river assaults.

  • they do in this way in Leningrad and fail...

  • then there would be no point in capturing the city. they needed it to cross the volga. and to do that they needed the city relatively intact.

  • 1) the city backed onto the Volga river - there was no going behind it to completely surround it.

    2) they did destroy it. Not a building was left undamaged. The Russians made their defenses in the rubble, so the Germans then had no choice but to go in with men.

  • re: German ex-combatants description of the landscape in the beginning: Note how their description of the landscape contained absolutely NO mention of people, thereby making the implicit assumption, subconsciously I'm sure, that the land was empty and ready for the mere taking. This is the language of conquerors.

  • He describes the landscape, why should he mention people lol?

People have basically nothing to do with landscape.

  • poetry at the beginning of the video clip re the Volga and vast Asian expanse after it...

  • It's always fun to watch old war-time propaganda videos.

Always find entertaining material in them.

P.S. This is by far the GREATEST WWII documentary that I've seen. BBC keep up the GREAT work.

  • Just dont get influence by the Nazi propaganda videos. xD

  • I thought I knew all about Stalingrad, but this section of video clarified a lot... tank you to KoLo2071 for the upload

  • Why did you respond to my comment then? Use the damn comment box.

  • Everything Wagner wrote was terrible. He starts off with something catchy then puts in about an hours of boring shit and then returns to the catchy bit.

  • Suren Mirzoyan is my hero, 8:50

  • Hitler is a blitherin idiot for wanting to attack and try to conquer Stalingrad, because the Main Objective of Army Group South was the Oil Fields of the Cacusas, in which Hitler himself ordered Army Group South to split their Forces.

  • a 1:23 what song is that

  • ride of the valkyries by Wagner

  • wow 24 hours for a privite thats crazy poor russian but war is war more story in the battle for the sovie union then the American campains..

  • One of the greatest, if not the greatest wwII documantary vid on youtube! (including the other 19 parts)

  • @slopedarmor I agree a truly excellent documentary series, from a horrific time in our history

  • @slopedarmor Well good sir, there is a documentary on the "history of dance" that you might look into. gives this one a run for its money.
