In terms of Bach playing, I like Maiskys romantic playing of the suites, however, when it comes to overall cello playing, Rostropovich is undeniable.
And Yo Yo Ma has like... one performance that I like above other cellists so far, his playing of Rachmaninoffs Cello Sonata, just happens to be far better than everyone elses imo.
I don't really think that the way he plays the Suites should be called interpreting. He doesn't interpret them, he gives as objective view as I've seen yet of them, and lets the music speak for itself. It's a very interesting style of playing, although I'm not sure if I like him or Mischa Maisky better when it comes to Bach... why not both?
Disregard previous comment. This obviously is the Prelude AND the Allenande. This was not clear to me before. I am going to buy a copy of this to put alongside my ten or so others.
I still remembered I was choosing Bach Cello Suite at Border. I took out over 5 performers and listened to them one by one. I was totally melted by Wang's performance. To me, he outperformed Ma. Viewing these videos, he is really great!!
Excellent! Since we don't really know how Bach intended these suites to be played, Jian's somewhat more "urgent" approach may very well be the correct one. Magnificent intonation and technique, Mr. Wang is a true master of the cello!!
This is a wonderful performance. Thank you....I have posted some recent Classical music, by another composer, still above the sod. Charles Roland Berry
Maisky do it better!!!!!!

Folks, this video is mislabeled. THIS IS NOT THE ALLEMANDE. IT IS THE FOURTH SUITE PRELUDE. And played exquisitely, I may add.
