THIS IS SO AWESOME, AND @LIVESOCIETY MANWOMANBOOGIE YOU ARE SO RIGHT , THIS IS NOT A PAUL SIMON ORIGINAL, THIS IS AN OLD TRADITIONAL R AND B, OR GOSPEL SONG, BUT NO ONE EVER GIVES CREDIT TO THE ORIGINATOR, JUST THE ONE WHO TAKES THE CREDIT.
@heckler245 Wrong, the Dixie Hummingbirds were around WAY before Paul was. Paul did a cover of it and it just stuck because of how popular he was at the time. RIP Ira, may you be singing God's praises in heaven. I would like to think I'll see you there when I pass on.
@heckler245 I apologize, i was wrong, here is what i found on Wiki:
"From Wikipedia,
"Loves Me Like a Rock" is a 1973 song recorded by American singer-songwriter Paul Simon, who also wrote the song which appears on his solo album There Goes Rhymin' Simon. It features background vocals from The Dixie Hummingbirds, a Southern gospel group. The Dixie Hummingbirds were eager to record the song with Simon, and they recorded their own version of the song soon afterward."
TOTAL RESPECT TO THE DIXIE HUMMINGBIRDS WHO WERE THE ORIGINATORS OF THIS SONG, AND RECORDED IT WHEN STEVIE AND PAUL WERE LITERALLY IN THEIR YOUTH, TEENAGE OR NOT.
DIXIE HUMMINGBIRD'S BLUEPRINT AND LEGACY IS ALL OVER THIS...RESPECT!!!
@livesociety no it was not. that song was originally written by the Dixie Hummingbirds...
That song was sung and performed by the Hummingbirds & touched the lives of those who were connected to & in the Gospel Circuit of their Era, all over the world before Paul Simon heard it...
that is Their song, it was not originated by him. sorry...my Dad was 15 when he started singing and playing guitar on the road, and TDHB was one of the first groups he ever started with. i know what im talking about.
@manwomanboogie Sorry but you're wrong. Simon wrote the song and had the Hummingbirds sing on it. They later recorded their own version. Look up "loves me like a rock" on wikipedia. I tried to give you some links but keep getting error messages when I try to post. Apparently youtube doesn't allow links in the comments.
@livesociety it's cool. i dont have to look it up, i have the original recordings led by Papa Tucker who was one of many great mentors to my Dad coming up, before that song was released by Paul Simon. Wikipedia among many other mainstream media outlets will say Paul Simon wrote it because that's the way the industry works... it's unfortunate. Take care...
@manwomanboogie Im sorry but livesociety is right. This song was written by Paul Simon and the Birds were featured on it 1973. This posting is a clip of the gershwin awards and they were honoring the works of paul simon and those works include "Love me like a rock" and thats why the song is being done here. The "Birds"version of the song actually won them a grammy award for best traditional gospel by a group or duo in 1974,but none the less it is a paul simon composition.
@manwomanboogie This song is most definitely a Paul Simon composition. The lyrics are Simon and it's widely considered that it's about President Nixon who was involved in the watergate scandal and was forced to resign.
Simon has many collaborations with musicians that showcased different styles including this one where the Hummingbirds did the backing vocal arrangement on their own, but the lyrics and song are always Simon.
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.

why did they start the song over? did he forget the words or something? i know he said something about cue cards....but ummmm if u haven't noticed he is blind.....i dont get it....someone fill me in plz!
I'm not sure either, he missed his cue but would have got away with it. You'd be filthy on Stevie if you were Ira Tucker having to his solo again. Even so they nailed it the second time, and how!!!
It's great to see Stevie having a good sense of humor for a simple error. All the greats have made mistakes. He made the best of it and got on with the great singing and piano playing. Go Stevie and the rest of the players.
If you listen closely to Stevie when he's singing in unison with everybody else, he's the highest pitched. Not that that's necessarily hard to accomplish HERE because everybody else is singing fairly low or medium range, but I'll always contend that Stevie has leather vocal chords.
BTW for those who don't know...Stevie has ear pieces that go in his ears which are called monitors which as he says are his "cue cards." My knowledge is just abundance in this because I'm a HUGE fan of Stevie's! :)
I just got done watching that show on tbs, and I swear I got goosebumps because of all the memories attached to this song and how long it had been since I've heard it. :)
