  • I apologized to "nachelleg" in a reply to her post. Let's let it go now.

  • LOVE IT! You know Ira is in heaven with his mother singing up a storm for God and the angels!

  • If they sing like this in heaven, I'll never do a bad thing again. Pure magic...

  • THIS IS SO AWESOME, AND @LIVESOCIETY MANWOMANBOOGIE YOU ARE SO RIGHT , THIS IS NOT A PAUL SIMON ORIGINAL, THIS IS AN OLD TRADITIONAL R AND B, OR GOSPEL SONG, BUT NO ONE EVER GIVES CREDIT TO THE ORIGINATOR, JUST THE ONE WHO TAKES THE CREDIT.

  • @nachelleg Nope. Simon wrote the song.

  • @heckler245 Wrong, the Dixie Hummingbirds were around WAY before Paul was. Paul did a cover of it and it just stuck because of how popular he was at the time. RIP Ira, may you be singing God's praises in heaven. I would like to think I'll see you there when I pass on.

  • @heckler245 I apologize, i was wrong, here is what i found on Wiki:

    "From Wikipedia,

"Loves Me Like a Rock" is a 1973 song recorded by American singer-songwriter Paul Simon, who also wrote the song which appears on his solo album There Goes Rhymin' Simon. It features background vocals from The Dixie Hummingbirds, a Southern gospel group. The Dixie Hummingbirds were eager to record the song with Simon, and they recorded their own version of the song soon afterward."

  • This must be pretty recent.

  • This is a legendary moment!

  • I'd say "who do,

Who do you think you're fooling? (who do you think you're fooling)

I've got the presidential seal (was the president)

I'm up on the presidential podium

    My mama loves me

  • Isn't he blind

  • Stevie, you nailed it the second time didn't you? You star!!

  • Holly Crap!!! I juss found my self jumpin out my chair

and goin crazy...and i'm alone xD

  • @Minchen3007

You ain't alone. I feel like shoutin'.

  • my momma loves me! God bless MOMS

  • Stevie Wonder is amazing!

  • TOTAL RESPECT TO THE DIXIE HUMMINGBIRDS WHO WERE THE ORIGINATORS OF THIS SONG, AND RECORDED IT WHEN STEVIE AND PAUL WERE LITERALLY IN THEIR YOUTH, TEENAGE OR NOT.

DIXIE HUMMINGBIRD'S BLUEPRINT AND LEGACY IS ALL OVER THIS...RESPECT!!!

  • @manwomanboogie The song was written by Paul Simon. Safe to say it originated with him. Although the Hummingbirds made it magical.

  • @livesociety no it was not. that song was originally written by the Dixie Hummingbirds...

That song was sung and performed by the Hummingbirds & touched the lives of those who were connected to & in the Gospel Circuit of their Era, all over the world before Paul Simon heard it...

that is Their song, it was not originated by him. sorry...my Dad was 15 when he started singing and playing guitar on the road, and TDHB was one of the first groups he ever started with. i know what im talking about.

  • @manwomanboogie Sorry but you're wrong. Simon wrote the song and had the Hummingbirds sing on it. They later recorded their own version. Look up "loves me like a rock" on wikipedia. I tried to give you some links but keep getting error messages when I try to post. Apparently youtube doesn't allow links in the comments.

  • @livesociety it's cool. i dont have to look it up, i have the original recordings led by Papa Tucker who was one of many great mentors to my Dad coming up, before that song was released by Paul Simon. Wikipedia among many other mainstream media outlets will say Paul Simon wrote it because that's the way the industry works... it's unfortunate. Take care...

  • @manwomanboogie Im sorry but livesociety is right. This song was written by Paul Simon and the Birds were featured on it 1973. This posting is a clip of the gershwin awards and they were honoring the works of paul simon and those works include "Love me like a rock" and thats why the song is being done here. The "Birds"version of the song actually won them a grammy award for best traditional gospel by a group or duo in 1974,but none the less it is a paul simon composition.

  • @ponchieboy68 ...

  • @manwomanboogie This song is most definitely a Paul Simon composition. The lyrics are Simon and it's widely considered that it's about President Nixon who was involved in the watergate scandal and was forced to resign.

Simon has many collaborations with musicians that showcased different styles including this one where the Hummingbirds did the backing vocal arrangement on their own, but the lyrics and song are always Simon.

  • greatest performance of this gospel ever heard!!!

  • Why wasn't SOMEONE holding Stevis que cards? LOL! ;)

    Love it!

  • could someone tell me the name of the man who plays the piano I forgot it

  • @brianalezz Stevie Wonder, and he's blind

  • @brianalezz Stevie Wonder! How could you forget? LOL!!!

  • Fabulous! Talent...one of God's wonderful gifts for us to enjoy!

  • My mama loved me like a rock. I know what that is like, may she rest in peace.

  • @Jevezy My mom is that way, too. I'm so fortunate.

  • @Jevezy frick. don't make me tear up man.

  • why did they start the song over? did he forget the words or something? i know he said something about cue cards....but ummmm if u haven't noticed he is blind.....i dont get it....someone fill me in plz!

  • The "cue cards" remark was a joke. I think he just forgot the song.

  • Comment removed

  • the joke is he's blind so i doesnt need cue cards, him being blind is the joke..

  • if you notice he was trying to get the speaker in his ear but it got lost in his coat. So he stoped the music found it, and put it back on!

  • Not too sure why he stopped but if you notice he (stevie) put something into his ears; similar to earplugs?

  • I'm not sure either, he missed his cue but would have got away with it. You'd be filthy on Stevie if you were Ira Tucker having to his solo again. Even so they nailed it the second time, and how!!!

  • @flewbyu357 In-ear monitors. I think he took them out actually.

  • mama loves me like a rock, she loves me like a rock. Great song guys. wonderful song to start my day

  • It's great to see Stevie having a good sense of humor for a simple error. All the greats have made mistakes. He made the best of it and got on with the great singing and piano playing. Go Stevie and the rest of the players.

  • I am getting tears over here!

  • Hollering!...damn cue cards!..LOL

  • Magical!!!!!!!

  • If you listen closely to Stevie when he's singing in unison with everybody else, he's the highest pitched. Not that that's necessarily hard to accomplish HERE because everybody else is singing fairly low or medium range, but I'll always contend that Stevie has leather vocal chords.

  • theyre all tenors. stevie wonder is just that wonderful....

  • Nobody is singing that high in the song (except for Ira Tucker's falsetto bits).

  • That was Spirit talking through Stevie. Why, I say that? Because I recognize when spirit talks. Thank for this video!

  • Muito bom mesmo!!Demais !!

  • Great song & performances!!

  • Where's the studio version of this song?

  • dat man on the piano ain no joke!

  • cue* sorry lol.

  • Took it to CHURCH!

  • Wow! great song

  • What is it Stevie says that makes everbody laugh?

  • "I don't have my que-cards"

  • BTW for those who don't know...Stevie has ear pieces that go in his ears which are called monitors which as he says are his "cue cards." My knowledge is just abundance in this because I'm a HUGE fan of Stevie's! :)

  • I like the O'Jays version of this song also......classic!!!

  • Paul Simon is a great songwriter. It doesn't get mo betta.

  • i love it....;)

  • That...Is...Awesome! ^^

  • WHOA, . . . we rockin' on, pal, . . . YEAH

  • no!! XD

  • dang what happened ? paul looks as old as the hummingbirds !

  • that guy's throat must absolutely kill at the end of the day

  • This is the ending credit song in the movie Zathura A space Adventure, Nice movie and nice song 5*

  • I just got done watching that show on tbs, and I swear I got goosebumps because of all the memories attached to this song and how long it had been since I've heard it. :)

  • hahahaha every time i think of that movie, this song is actually the first thing i think of lol

  • RIP Mr. Ira Tucker. God bless you Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder!

  • Two giants of American popular music, Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder. Awesome!

  • Ira's got soul! Listen to that phrasing; soul to spare...

  • @bassman462 --Isn't he heavenly?? I LOVE his voice. It's so God-given... and I know God is smiling every time Ira starts to sing!

  • just listen the real voices of gospel

  • This was from the Gershwin awards last year... they honored the work of the legendary Paul Simon. Next year's honoree is Stevie Wonder. So now, we'll get to see another show full of Stevie Wonder songs and tributes. Can't wait!

  • sure hope he doesnt sing barack obama again.

    i hate that song.

  • ????

  • That's not a "song", it's just a little chant he does at some of his shows to show his support. If you don't like it, wait for the next song to start up.

  • @jmaschle I love that song!

  • I love this kind of music

  • Amazing!!!

  • RIP. Only the good die young!

  • Rest In Peace Mr. Ira Tucker. You, along with James Walker, James Davis, Howard Carroll, Beachy Thompson, Willie Bobo, and Paul Owens gave us some of the greatest gospel music we've ever heard. Mr. Tucker sang lead with The Dixie Hummingbirds for 70 years, and for each year Mr. Tucker was a force of nature. Surely we will miss Ira Tucker but we can be assured that he is safely resting in the arms of Jesus now. My prayers go out to The Tucker family.

    T.L. Harris

  • Amen, RIP Mr Tucker.

  • Just Fabulous. This is real deal between gospel, blues, & soul. Just named our dog after this song. AKC name = "Lyncrest Loves Me Like A Rock" & the call name is Rocky.

  • Fabulous, this is music from the heart, what great artists... Makes you want to sing and dance out there, being a believer or not. Gospel music is pure magic.

  • I want to know this one: What is the oldest band/group still going?

The Rolling Stones gets mentioned. But the Dixie Hummingbirds, the Bueno Vista Social Club etc, surely eclipse them.

What is the truth on this front?

  • google is your friend

  • The Dixie Hummingbirds began in 1928, long before the Stones were even born.

  • simon has always had a love affair with gospel music....got his line for bridge over troubled waters from the silver swan tones singing mary dont you weep...here you see it all come together with such a sweet power simon is a true star

  • just listen the real voices of gospel

  • for 50 years now, paul simon has been composing and singing some of the most beautiful songs. bridge over is possibly the best ever written.

  • oman i love the version in The Fighting Temptations. Who said Gospel music cant be great?

  • Yes The Fightin Temptaions Version Iz Raw

  • soooo much more soul in the temptations version and they have makeshift instruments i like that like the clippers and scissors i though that was really cool

  • No one.

  • lol... well if they did.. then they're wrong lol

Tell you what: Ira Tucker talked about this session and said: you can see it. It's out there. You can watch it on Y o u t u b e. • yo pill poppin lameduck - What 90% do you watch? Cause CNN, ABC, CBS, and NBC, NY Times, Wash Post, etc have already admitted liberal bias. Its pretty plain to see for us average folk. Maybe you should stop poppin the pills and open yer eyes?

  • What are you talking about? PLease show us where/when these news stations and newspapers admitted liberal bias. Thanks.

  • what you need hand holding?

do a google search on: "press campaign contributions" and read the second article (and weep!).

Of course opening your eyes and independent thought could help too.

  • To jmaschle- Quitcher whinin', willya? 90% of the media is in conservative corporate hands and pushing the agenda of the Bush White House, and yet you're still unsatisfied and have to take potshots at PBS? Take a chill pill, buddy.

  • What the hel you talkin' about 90%? jmaschle is right, cuz the only part of the media that is conservative is on the internet, talk radio, and FOX NEWS.

  • id rather PBS spend my tax dollars on this type of programming than the political posturing of obama, clinton, and biden!
