They mostly sell cards at 512MB or 1GB. That's still a lot. Though there's more and more cards over 1GB.

Video memory is NOT the most important thing. More video memory is needed as the screen resolution increases thats it.

If you play at resolutions of 1440x900 for example 512MB is enough. I ran a 9800 GTX like this with 512MB of ram on it and was able to run many games at maximum settings.

I currently have a GTX 465 with 1GB of vram. When looking at the ram usage on the card, most games rarely break half a gig, let alone use the entire 1GB.

There are some 5970s with 4GBs of memory, I guess that's mainly for multiple monitors and/or 2560x1600.

512MB is still not bad, but if you're doing a big monitor like a 1920x1080 1GB is a better idea, and that's usually plenty. Still more can't hurt, the GTX 480 has 1.5 GB and the 6970 will have 1.5 GB. Standard 5970s are 2GB. Still even at 1920x1080, they've compared the same card at 512MB and 1GB and it can be close, some games want more memory than others though.

I think you can do 7680x1600, which is three of them, which is just WOW.

I think the overclocked 5970 with 4GB is probably made with that stuff in mind and is a total waste for someone using a single monitor.

Now.....could you buy two of those?

I'm not sure how much multimonitor stuff is going to take off considering how expensive everything is, there isn't too much stuff that can benefit from it.

But having DVI on a graphics card is better than VGA, its easier to scale the connection down than up.
