I'm so happy there's someone like you out there who studies the correct rhythms and rudiments to this piece before posting their half-assed work on youtube. Great job, man!
Good job. Thanks. I have been looking for a third eye drum video. Now I can see when I have been messing up. The beginning part and first two parts. I couldn't figure out what he was doing exactly. It helps sooooo much to see it played!
@BrianWilson720 i always try to match the fundamental notes of the song with the toms, as far as possible. On this song the toms are approximately in D and G. But it depends on the tom sizes. Generally I like higher tunings, because to me it sounds better and I get more rebound (and the heads last longer).
@BrianWilson720 Hi, great job! This is one of my fav things to practice. Unlike the crap videos I have up, I'm back playing my dw exotic which is basically in the old danny sizes. I play the intro entirely differently, and likely very incorrectly, I like the way you are playing that pattern. I'd love to see this basic pattern actually correctly transcribed somewhere... til then I just try to duplicate what I'm hearing with that unrelenting hi-hat on all 3. So much fun. Keep it up !!
How in the shit did you manage to figure out the opening pattern? The only way I can see you possibly did is watching the video of them do this live in pomona ;)
Do you know if danny's using a certain rudiment for the opening?
@OnePremier Pomona is a good guide, yes. I watch a lot of live videos to figure things out. Also, if it doesn't flow naturally, it can't be right. That helps as a basic guideline. I'm not sure about the opening, though. Live it's always improvised and on the album it's full of delay effects.
how do you get the remote hi hat there between the toms. Im a lefty drummer but i keep my ride cymbal on the right and hi hat left to be ambidextrous cause i play the left hi hat with my left hand but im thinking of putting it in the middle but i dont know how. I have a remote "dogbone" hi hat
@thekillingjoke Very well done. Third Eye is by far my favorite Tool song.. It sums up their essence in perfect harmony. I've listened and (vocaly) covered This song countless times and I'm always left feeling awed by it. Its timeless. Danny Carey would be proud
dude tool is my favorite band. this rocks . great job! i know dany cary is about the hardest to cover out there and you where pretty much spot on! ne one would be lucky to have you in there band.
@syn5643 Not right now, I'm working on some "solo" music first. I'd like to play in a well functioning band one day, but _looking_ for a band is frustrating.
@thekillingjoke Where are you located, I think you'd fit very well with the band I've got together! I can send you some newer songs if you give me your email
I didnt think it was possible, but you pulled it off better than tbartles, now thats saying something, great job, made my arms sore just watching it XD
once again...you are a son of a bitch. this is tits man...like nice B-cup titties with hershey kiss nipples located 45 degrees from the top of the boob....like...perfect titties.

you missed the first main rythm when the bass enters, beside that, good job , congrats

the tom pattern at the begining when the vocals start doesn't sound very fluid to me. seems to tighten up around the 3:00 mark.

What samples are you running on the mandalas for the intro? Are they just extra tom samples?
bobbywingood 1 year ago
@bobbywingood yes, a tom sample in two different pitches, with mainly attack sound and not much "body".
thekillingjoke 1 year ago
Out of all Tool drum patterns the beginning of Third Eye is the one I want to learn the most.
bobbywingood 1 year ago
hey, i was wondering, how did you tune your drums in this song?

thanks man, i tuned my toms in fifths, and tom patterns sound so much better now...
by the way, are you planning to upload a new video anytime soon?

what i meant was that the fundamental note of each tom was five notes apart from the previous one, say D A E, for example

is the alpha metal ride any good? i hear it rings alot
lolvids2 1 year ago
@lolvids2 true... it really has a dark ringing sound. I'm a bit disapointed by it, it's hard to get a distinct sound out of it in the mix.
thekillingjoke 1 year ago
@thekillingjoke yeah so ill probably get the alpha groove ride or the rock ride
