I just listened to the second of the two Ani Difranco Utah Phillips albums, and there's a story on it about union workers or something who were assassinated by dozens of drunk schmucks who were all deputized on the spot just so they could go and kill the striking workers. When the workers asked the deputies who they were working for, they said "we're all bosses here!" I'm not sure but I think that might be the inspiration for this song, if not one of many.
Actually you're right on the money here, bro. Steve has said that this song was written about the very incident you are referring to. I believe it was in Texas, if I remember correctly, and the owners of a mine had a bunch of thugs deputized so they could kill the union workers who were striking at the mine. If you remember, Albini wrote about the darker side of human life when he was in Big Black; murder, sexual abuse, rape, depression, hatred, ect. This story fit right in with that.
Saw them live in 1986. Monstrous and, to this day, the loudest band I've ever seen. Brutally intense.
