  • Soundgarden and Alice in chains are the most technically gifted musicians. But I would have to agree with you that Nirvana is the best. Nirvana is just on a whole different level.

  • If someone remixed nevermind, to sound more raw & less polished, would you give it a higher rating then?

  • I would have to say Van Halen's debut is the best I've ever heard, solid from beginning to end! As far as Nirvana being the best to come out of Seattle, it would be a toss up between AIC and Soundgarden for me always thought Nirvana was overrated, imo.

  • 1. Alice In Chains

    2. Soundgarden

    3. Nirvana

    4. Pearl Jam (they make some great songs, like the others, but i find most of their music to be pretty boring to listen to... That's just my opinion of course)

  • I would have to go with Soundgarden as my favorite out of the 4.

  • Nirvana

    AIC

    Sound Garden

Pearl Jam (who I can't stand)

  • in no particular order

    1.Alice in chains

    2.nirvana

    3.sound garden

    4.pearl jam

  • holy shit ! is that Dave Grohl?

  • I wouldn't even say Nirvana is part of the big "four" I'd say they were seperate from all the others. I'm not a big fan of grunge, Nirvana, Mudhoney, and Melvins are pretty much the only 3 I'd listen to on a daily basis.

  • Alice In Chains.

  • Alice in chains. For me, I think it's the drugs, and darkness themes laced with their metal sound. Love their acoustic work too.

  • i enjoy ur vids a lot but it needs to be made clear that grunge isnt a genre or anything its a label that the media put on a mess of bands many that had no conncetions with each other such as everclear who are from LA not seatle where the "grunge" scene was

  • alice,soundgarden and screaming trees

  • ALICE

  • Alice in chains is my favorite,no doubt.

  • soundgarden is the best of the big 4, but stone temple pilots is the best grunge band.

  • Baby's on fire, better throw her in the water.

  • Nirvana wins for me, Nevermind and In Utero are masterpieces.

AIC takes second place, they are also awsome, love layne's voice.

Soundgarden taked third place, Christ is awsome but i find some of there songs a little booring.

Pear Jam will be last for me because i dont understand there music :P they are booring and everything sounds kinda the same for me.

  • facelift,zeppelin 1,and talking heads 77

  • alice in chains for sure

  • nirvana

    alice in chains

    mudhoney

    soundgarden

    pearl jam

  • 1.Nirvana

    2.Soundgarden

  • pearl jam and pumpkins just came from seattle .. their sound was more straight up rock than grunge. leave them out. pearl jam are still going strong 2day cos of their classic rock sound.

  • @booster330 smashing pumpkins came from chicago not seattle.

  • I'd say

    1. Nirvana

    2. Alice in Chains

    3. Screaming Trees

    4. Soundgarden

  • 1. Alice In Chains

    2. Pearl Jam

    3. Nirvana

    4. Soundgarden

  • @DTL3317 I agree

  • In order of signifigance (not favorites)

    1. Nirvana

    2. Pearl Jam

    3. Alice In Chains

    4. Soundgarden

and 5 would be Stone Temple Pilots

  • Alice In Chains, much better than Nirvana, Sondgarden being close to AIC.

    Dirt is the shiznit.

  • Comment removed

  • 1. Nirvana

    2.Alice in chains

3.Either pearl jam or mudhoney but I kind of agree with the other guy.. pearl jam were more "alternative" and kind of jumped on the grunge bandwagon because they played around Seattle a lot and were first popular around the grunge movement.. so either one. very hard though.. soundgarden was good too. Stone temple piolets and silverchair were also very good (if u consider em grunge)

  • officialy, alice in chains, pear jam, nirvana, and soundgarden

  • Fuck you guys.. Nirvana, L7, Pearl Jam, and mudhoney... No one puts l7 in the spotlight : (((

  • Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Alice In Chains

  • They're all diffrent. All awesome in diffrent ways.

  • Alice in Chains without a doubt. "Dirt" was one of the few masterpieces that came out in the 90's. There's no fillers and it has some of the best songs ever written. Nirvana's overrated imo. I really only like a few of their songs from Bleach and Incesticide. Never really got into Pearl Jam (All their songs sounded boring and the same to me). Soundgarden was pretty decent but they weren't for me.

  • Everyone forgets about TAD :[

They may not have been the most publicly produced band of the 90's, but they were by far one of the best if not the best band of that era (this is all in my opinion, of course).

  • Nirvana easily. They inspired SO many people and consistently play extremely original and extremely talented music in all three albums. I love Nevermind, I'm sorry you don't like it, however In Utero is my favorite album of theirs. All Apologies and, yeah, big surprise, Smells Like Teen Spirit are my favorite Nirvana songs however I have listened to pretty much anyone you can list and I love EVERY one of them. I like the others but I'd say Pearl Jam is the weakest. Glad you agree!

  • @Watch4 I like In Utero/ Bleach a lot, not too much of a fan of the production on Nevermind, but I like Nirvana a lot. Not as much as I used to, though. I've found that in some ways Nirvana ripped off the Wipers and the Pixies (to which Kurt admitted) a lot more than they should've in select songs, but I can't deny the fact that they are one of the most influential bands of all time. Although, barely anyone ever talks about the whole band because everyone's obsessed with Kurt. What a shame..

  • @FlipperBabies470 I like the entire band. Naturally people are attracted to Kurt because he sings and wrote the music as well as played guitar. Although I do like Krist's flowing bass lines and the super awesomeness of David Grohl's drumming. The Pixies influenced a ton of bands, Nirvana just happened to be one of them. If you compare the two, they don't sound anything a like at all, just the dynamics in volume were a big thing they eventually incorporated in their music.

  • @FlipperBabies470 Although really, I don't understand why some are so turned off by the production. To me, Butch Vig doesn't do much other than some track over dubs, and they can actually really make parts of the song powerful. Especially Drain You, that song just explodes with volume and emotion to me. I like Smells Like Teen Spirit but I'm not one of the idiots who thinks that's their only good song, in fact, I mostly listen to the other songs and not SLTS.

  • for me, it's definitely Soundgarden. Nirvana were great but overrated, Alice In Chains' final album had way too many mediocre songs, and Pearl Jam peaked after their fourth album. Soundgarden's the only band to consistently kick major ass throughout their entire career. Chris Cornell's lyrics were nothing like his contemporaries. they were way more cryptic, disturbing, and intelligent. unfortuanetly, most people will never see them the way they see their precious Nirvana.

  • Pearl Jam-Could be better

Alice in Chains-Should have stopped when Layne died.

Soundgarden-I enjoy everything they've done but...

Nirvana-Nirvana had much more energy (in the music) and were much more experimental than the others. They also never made albums that sounded alike.

  • I'm gonna have to say Nirvana, i never get tired of their albums Bleach and Incesticide,i think those two albums are grunge at it's finest.

  • AIC but it's all about Melvins

  • definitely nirvana

  • Nirvana and Pearl Jam for me. I, unlike you apparently, love PJ's later work and Nevermind (though after watching your review of that album, I can totally understand why you don't like it : ) )

My FAVORITE grunge band however is the early work of the Melvins.

  • Oh shit! I forgot about Here Come The Warm Jets and In The Court of the Crimson King and Blue Album! those along with System of a Down are my favorite debuts.

  • Nirvana 100%

  • Pearl Jam -- My favorite band, and the consumate classicist rock band (though they were nominally a grunge band on their first two albums). Every album after Ten is idiosyncratic (I love idiosyncractic albums), the variety of music contained on the albums is greater than most other bands (everything from totally brutal rockers to intimate ballads), and every album is completely different. On top of which Pearl Jam is even better live, with many songs evolving into extended jams.

  • riffs + vocal harmonies = art

    Alice In Chains

  • I'd have to say AIC. Still the grunge band I listen to the most to this day. Phenomenal music

  • This is unrelated, but did you hear the new song off of Teargarden by kalid yet??!!!

  • 1. Nirvana

    2. Alice in Chains

    3. Soundgarden

    4. Pearl Jam

  • I know it's cliche, but i'll have to say Nirvana. They made my favorite album of the era(In Utero). Not too much into the other 3.

  • Without a doubt it would have to be Alice In Chains. Love the melodies between Layne and Jerry. R.I.P. Layne.

But if I had to put them in order it would be

    Alice In Chains

    Soundgarden

    Nirvana

    Pearl Jam

  • My favorite Of the big four has to be without a doubt a is Alice In Chains, and im surprised i thought i was the only person who likes Everclear R.I.P Layne Staley

  • Nirvana

    1. They wrote the most memorable (and arguably best) songs

    2. They went crazy as soon as they could

    3. Nirvana never reached the point of parody

look at Chris Cornell's RNB record

    the new AiC record

and ANYTHING Pearl Jam have done

Nirvana were pure punk and knew how it should end

  • Nirvana for sure. Never got into pearl jam or alice in chains that much. Soundgarden is good but sometimes their songs bore me a little.

  • My Generation, YES!!

  • Soundgarden is definitely my favorite grunge band. Their first two albums are kind of weak, but the rest of their stuff is great. Nirvana and Alice in Chains I like about the same, and Pearl Jam is close.

  • Dude... your eyes at 4:04

    What about Are You Experienced?

My favorite grunge band would also be Nirvana mostly because Kurt was the most skilled songwriter that had appeared in years. But Pearl Jam is also a favorite of mine, I love Vedder's voice and Pearl Jam's songwriting was just below Kurt's.

But why do you hate Mars Volta? I see no reason for it...

  • Alice in Chains by far are the band i appreciate most from the "big four" and feel to be the best. While Soundgarden may have the longest tenure and Nirvana may have the record sales, Alice's impact is undeniable. they accomplished their goal of creating atmospheres that were both beautiful (Nutshell, Sunshine, Rotten Apple) and also disturbingly haunting (Sickman, Down in a Hole, Love Hate Love, Bleed the Freak, etc.)

  • I'd have to say Pearl Jam. Long time fan of theirs but admittedly, there's quite a few songs in their discography that dissappoint. However, the rest are out of this world. Vedder's voice is one of the best and is instantly recognisable. Legendary band. Nirvana are a close second to them though. So many anthems. Pity their time ended so prematurely, it would have been very interesting to hear their progression through to now.

  • @musicqueen05 Oh and BIG THANK YOU for the lovely recommendation of my channel dude =) Much appreciated!!!! You rock!!

  • Hmm... I'm going to have to go with Alice In Chains all the way. For me, their whole discography is solid. And they, have more tasty riffs than any of the other bands.

  • "alotta Shit" loser

  • Pearl Jam

Just are, Nirvana's entire discography is solid. Meh Nevermind isn't great. And they weren't around as long as AIC or PJ.

Cmon. In my opinion Pearl Jam are the best out of those four. They have and will continue to make solid music.

  • Pearl Jam is number one for me, out of the big four, i like their songs the most...Then its Nirvana and Alice and Chains are tied and Soundgarden last. I could never really get into Soundgarden.

  • Nirvana is the best. Soundgarden is number 2. Alice In Chains is 3rd ,but I can't stand Pearl Jam. They were all Grunge wanna-be's. Eddie Vedder wanted to be Kurt Cobain. But still good question.

  • Nirvana: They were the Beatles of the 90s. Kurt took everything that was great about rock n roll - the emotion, the quirky song writing, punk energy, heavyness, zappa style humour, and even a subtle progressive sensibility - and turned out 4 classic, fun, powerful, and diverse records. Nirvana did more in a 2 minute song, or a 4 note riff, than some bands do in entire discographies.

  • Nirvana becouse i love the lryics and soul. I almost love every song. i even liked nevermind even if it has horrible prodcution. in utero is the best album ever.

Do re mi is the best unrealesed songe ever. LOunge act last party is orgasmic.

  • Pretty hard.

    Nirvana in utero

    Pixies doolittle

    pixies surfer rosa

    Nirvana bleach

  • Mudhoney hehe

  • nirvana would have to have the best discography.

alice in chains for the best album of the bands listed. dirt was just on a scale that could never be reached

soundgarden sounds the best live (i never got the chance to see alice in chains with lane staley)

  • Soundgarden mainly due to my love of weird time signatures and 70's rock Superunknown although cliche is probably my favorite album by them

P.S. Dirt by Alice in Chains is the SHIT

  • I have to say Nirvana or Soundgarden

  • nirvana, soundhgarden and smashing pumpkins people seem to forget them as today there a mess of the a band also mudhoney

  • @series360 That's why I asked of the big four. I realize that these bands aren't the only good ones out there, but I'm interested in your thoughts on the big four.

  • @series360 But the Smashing Pumpkins were never a grunge band (a few songs from Mellon Collie had the quite/loud shift that was typical of the "grunge sound", but they were never grunge).

  • @series360 Smashing Pumpkins arent a grunge band

  • you are now a cooler person! We're Only in it For the Money is also my fav Zappa album!

I would say Nirvana. They are all great, but I listen to Nirvana way more than the others.

  • Soundgarden. idc but wat u say. Nirvana is over-rated. yeaaa yeaa they were the first grunge band to get big but tht doesnt make them the best!

  • Nirvana, definitely. I'd like to think of grunge as the offspring of the DIY punk scene, and I think Nirvana is the only band out of the "Big Four" who carried the punk sound, punk aesthetic, and punk attitude (Minus all that straight edge shit.) Pearl Jam is really more of a "rock" band then a grunge band, and I think they lack that raw sound that Nirvana has. Soundgarden is in the same boat as PJ, and Alice in Chains is too metal for me to be a grunge band.

  • I'm a fan of them all but I've got to say Alice In Chains is the best as a complete package, but they all have some very good songs. Considering they all sound vastly different and their styles appeal to different age demographics, Alice still takes the cake.

  • surfer rosa by the pixies! :)

  • Yeah. Interpol's "Turn on the Bright Lights" is ridiculously good. Don't listen to much grunge, but Nirvana is cool.

  • nirvana hands down could listen to incesticide nevermind boxset everthing without out hitting the skip button

  • 'sparkle and fade' is not their debut album :). i think it's their second release.

  • @LfunkeyA Yeah, I put that in an annotation. :-)

  • Nirvana: for not giving a fuck

    Pearl Jam: for being melodic

    Soundgarden: for being creative

Alice In Chains: for ... i dont know they are all just awesome

  • I have to say Nirvana. Kurt really sang whatever the fuck he wanted, even if it didn't make any sense to anybody else. And that to me was what Grunge was all about. Not only that, but after going through the huge commercial success of Nevermind, they stepped it back to a more messy sound with In Utero. I don't think you can get more Grunge than that.

  • I would say Soundgarden (only because I am a HUGE fan). They have the most spontaneous sound and Cornell's singing ability during that time period was phenomenal. Badmotorfinger? Superunknown? Great fucking stuff. Alice In Chains was great as well but I haven't really delved into there music as much as I should. But I do really enjoy Mad Season. Nirvana is my third because of their obvious impact during their period and all there songs are very good. Pearl Jam not a big fan of.

  • sorry it ended up being 5 parts haha:

    so here it is:

    Nirvana: for Rebellious and Loud

    Soundgarden:for Original and Original

Alice In Chain: for Passion and Talent

    Pearl Jam:for Soul and Respect

so if you had to pick looking at that on which has a more grunge vibe.... ya Nirvana (cliche? maybe not hahaha) But ill stick with respect and say pearl jam!

    Thank you Sir!

    -Lostdogs89

  • I would say Pearl Jam But are we talking about pearl jam up to say 1995 or their whole career because they still carry the torch for the grunge scene which also show something about them as a band and even standing strong through the change of 4 drummers. Pearl Jam has always played what they wanted and never worried about what the media asks of them they are today like a non Indie, Indie band hahaha Probably not most liked but definitely most deserving of respected than the other 3.

  • And I would say Alice In Chains for passion for music and probably the better song writing than the other 3, musically and lyrically with the better guitarist (pearl jam following close behind ;) haha) But like Soundgarden Alice In Chains is more widely accepted in the metal world than the grunge especially now with their last album (thumbs down)

  • I would say Nirvana (Cliche hahaha unless you are full hearted about it) if we are talking about the grungiest out of all 4, who played the loudest rebellious music. If we are talking about a band who blew up the grunge scene which pearl jam follows real close behind. Nirvana was good and all but I really dont see them any better than the other three unless you just dont like the sounds played by the other three.

  • Ok this will be a little long so it will be a three part comment:

well I say pearl jam because they are my favorite band but really what are the qualifications to give an answer?

I would say Soundgarden cause they started before the other 3 and it could be possible that they have the better and more original singer than the other 3!! But I dont think the music could keep up with soundgardens singer but hey maybe after some time they will have finally caught up ;)

  • It's got to be Nirvana. they're the only band that I've heard so far that doesn't have a bad song from their radio hits to there bootlegs. Alice in Chains is next simply because they have a lot of amazing songs! Soundgarden and Pearl jam have some awesome songs but i really only like a handful. Ten is the only pearl jam album that stands out to me. All their other albums sound the same. so it's 1-Nirvana 2-Alice in chains 3-Soundgarden 4-Pearl Jam

  • Alice In Chains. Awesome musically and lyrically, plus they have the most consistent album releases IMO.

  • Comment removed

  • Alice in Chains. With Staley. I don't own their eponymous, but Facelift and Dirt are among my overall favorite albums. The angsty/depressive lyrics and incredible harmonies made them among my favorite bands.

Their latest with DuVall shouldn't really count because Staley was such an icon to the band and it was ~13 years since their last performances. IMO they should've at least changed the band name.

Next is Soundgarden (who doesn't love Superunknown?), Nirvana, then Pearl Jam (I only like Ten)

  • *However, I absolutely love "Heaven Beside You" from their eponymous, I can say that much about it. Cantrell at his finest. I'm just see-through faded, super jaded, out of my miiiiind...

Have to tag that on there because the comment character limit fucking sucks. Goddammit Youtube.

  • Nirvana was the most successful with nevermind, but I think soundgarden is the best, mostly cause of Chris Cornell''s vocals.

  • No doubt its Nirvana.

  • @Calemzus360 Yep

  • Alice in Chains and Soundgarden ! Blind Melon was kool

  • Alice in Chains, Nirvana is a big contender, but my personal tastes are heavier. Nirvana is a good band over all but my tastes are with AIC.

  • My favorites for the big four are Nirvana, Alice, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam. I like Nirvana the most because of the way they crafted their sound with passion whether it be mellow like Unplugged or sheer intensity like a lot of the stuff on Bleach and In Utero. Same goes for Alice. Alice has got a lot of passion which is like a light house beacon on Sap and Jar of Flies, but at the same time the can go hard with tracks like Them Bones, Dam that River, and etc. Soundgarden I put next b/c of

  • @Jackmonster3231 their sheer intensity however they go below Nirvana and Alice because to me the perfect album is one that can go both mellow and hard. Soundgarden while at times they create a murky sound like the stuff on Down on the Upside they never really went all the way mellow like the other 3 did. Pearl Jam I put last simply because I like the others better lol. But thats not to say I dont like Pearl Jam just they had some bumpy albums in their career. I'm seeing them at Madison Squarelol

  • for me it's easy, nirvana. i enjoyed more songs from them then the other three bands. i hate soundgarden. Alice in chains had a few songs i liked. I only like ten by pearl jam. actually, there are a few good tracks from their second album.

  • Alice in Chains. The image of grunge itself. Depression, heroin, bluesy riffs, groovy drums.. But then grunge is a sensitive subject. Some people say the label grunge was made up by media. I just know it as unique alternative music from Seattle. Each of those bands have their own unique sound and style. At the end of the day I don't think anyone can say which one is the best.

  • no love for the screaming trees? out of the big four i would say alice in chains

  • Nirvana... Great songwriting...

  • I would say Nirvana, because none of the band's recordings ever fall in the grunge cliches. Bleach comes close, but not to the point of disgust.
