I must thank Clint Eastwood and Martin Scorses for that beautiful "piano blues" movie, otherwise I would have never heard of this Lady.
I have been listening to jazz for about 30 years..how is it possible I have never heard of her? Why has she been neglected the deserving fame and popularity that many undeserving musicians enjoyed?
Dorothy was my dearest friend. This was one of my favorites. She took me under her wing and always insisted that I sing wherever she was playing. I was honored and loved her so for genrosity and musical genius. I was fortunate to perform with her at 1996 Playboy Jazz Festival at the Hollywood Bowl. I have never seen or heard the performance. I know it was aired on NPR but I understand they don't keep the tapes. But I know there is someone with a copy. Now that would be a great christmas gift.
