I've regularly reached 45 mph downhill on a cyclocross bike with a compact crank. 48 big ring in front and 12 or 13 small cog in the back. that's not a very high gear, and it becomes effortless in less than a minute. If I had like a road bike standard 53x11 or some ridiculous TT gear like 67x11 for example I imagine one could pass 70mph at some point. My point is, 41mph is really not fast. Because I'm overweight and out of shape and I hit 45mph

@FreddeL in terms of miles?... ive reached 45MPH on my 1960's scwinne speed bike on a city street. im hoping to reach 50MPH in three months, sort of my 18th bithday pesent to myself lol, but first i need to fix my rear derailer, it isnt shifting to my last gear... in case your interested, im selling the bike, $300, its 95% original excet one shifter cable, brake pads and the seat, yes, original tires, no joke. its an original schwinne, too, from chicago! =]
