  • Well, "Herzog acknowledged that DeBruin acted heroically during his imprisonment, refusing to leave while some sick prisoners remained, but Herzog was unaware of this fact until after the film had been completed. Herzog states that this narrative aspect probably would have been included had he learned it earlier."...

  • werner herzog is my favorite director and he is an amazing storyteller. when i was a child i would watch his movies in languages i didnt understand , with no subtitles, and still be totally fascinated.if you want to learn about history, or anything for that matter, read a book! we watch movies to be entertained, they take us to a make believe place that exists nowhere save for on that screen.i think i'll go watch fitzcraldo now,i love it there.klaus kinski best actor ever!! R.I.P.

  • I suspected there was something fishy about the movie portrayal of Gene,it just didnt add up.Im glad to read he was just as much a hero as Dengler, perhaps more so since he paid the ultimate price. One question still lingers in my head, where did the idea that he was a nut case originaly come from???

  • I just saw the movie today. Did Gene and the others die? I think they should have shown Gene differently in the movie after watching things like this and finding out what really happened. He was pictured as a jerk in the movie. But the movie didnt tell what happened to him and the others that werent with Dengler.

  • @clewi1091 Deiter Dengler and Pisidhi Indradat were the only prisoners to survive that we know about. Nobody knows for certain what happened to the others except for Gene. Apparently he was recaptured by viet kong then was sent to a prison center somewhere. There is no record of him ever reaching the prison center so he might have died, but he might not. No one really knows for sure. And yes, the movie does really portray him in a bad way.

  • seems the money makers used dieter, for show. Dieter was healthier than any of them and his object was to run, and survive. The others got the socks knocked out of them. Longer time at camp Im not sure I saw a hero, i saw someone who made it out and he had good love for his friend.or friends. But honour all P>O>W and soldiers of this rotten wars that wasnt worth it.ti die not remembered has real men..........

  • ahh one thing more I am not american but i cannot understand somehting i dont understand why USA goverment doesent more for try to find out what happened with all the missed people of the war.....who know maybe still is there prissioner of war alive???

  • Hello! I visited your website and was doing my own research about what happened in real and i must to say that before to make all this i was impressed with the movie but now that I know things happened in a Very different way I feel so dissapointment with the movie!! I hope another director can make the True Story on a film because is not fair all this 7 heroes are portrayed as only 1 heroe.

Thank you so much for Posting this!!!!

  • are you sarcastic or not', can't tell :P But yeah i found out he was kinda a hero cuz he wanted to go back to help Y.C. he was sick..

  • Was gene as crazy as in the movie?

  • no he wasn't in the movie he is portrayed as a selfish, unstable person but in real life, he was a hero to stay behind, because he had a chance to live if he had escaped, but if he didn't he would have been executed (but there are proof that gene and others had escaped, but they do not know where they are

  • there were reports that he lived after the Vietnam War. He lived until the 1990s.

  • ''brohamj' is a disgrace to thailand, how dare he/she calls the royal family's relative a Garbage Man

  • he's a relative if u havent noticed...the garbage man ur reffering yo is your dad i guess...he noes nothing cuz he aint there yet. FULL STOP

  • God bless you Pisidhi. You are a special man and a good person. I hope the rest of your life is good for you.

  • ชื่ออะไรนิ

  • Wait...who is that dude? Which dude is he?

  • Why does everyone complain about this film not

completely portraying the true story?! It was BASED on a true story, meaning that not everything in the movie depicted how it actually was in real life. It was not meant to fully outline the actual story and that was the intention.

  • Exactly, just like pretty much any movie based on a true story. Always BASED on a true story, not the exact story.

  • Thanks for saying this! I can't believe some of the things people are saying. I have great respect for Herzog, and he obviously has great respect for Dieter (he made two films about his story!). This is not a documentary like his other film, but his own dramatic interpretation of the events that occurred. I seriously doubt he meant to insult DeBruin with his portrayal.

  • yeah he didn't know anything about debruin until after the movie, so he couldn't do anything about it im pretty sure he wanted to change that but he couldn't have

  • a little hoggish here

  • the director of this movie is a total asshole!

  • you're garbage man

  • it seems after watching some dengler interviews the movie (RescueDawn) wasnt really that accurate....which is a shame

  • Well, then it's a shame that Herzog portrayed Gene as a total nutcase.

  • Pisidhi Indradat is a Thai who worked with Air America and was shot down together with Eugene DeBruin over Laos. They both were imprisoned 1 1/2 Years before Dengler. Indadat and DeBruin made the escape plan. Indadat was the only Survivor beside Dengler.

  • Are you referring to how it happened in the movie? Because that's not how it really happened. The whole reason people are up in arms about this portrayal of the story is because of the dishonor and complete inacuracy of Gene DeBruin's character. DeBruin deserves to be honored, and instead he was disgraced. Regardless if this is BASED on a true story or not, heroes do not need to be scorned. PancamoXXL's comment illustrates this point more than anything.

  • wait, are you saying "not true" to this guy in the video above who was actually there and another survivor? Are you 8 old or mentaly handicapped? Unbelievable

  • He's saying it as a response to some other commentor..

  • who was that?

  • I can't believe that I was so foolish to think that Hollywood could make a decent portrayal of a piece of history.

  • a total shame they treated DeBruin this way in the movie. Served no purpose.
