On which notes is it easier to do circular breathing? I assume they are the notes with a wide, stable, range, but also with a good amount of resistance. So i would think notes that are fairly high are the easiest, like the D in third octave.

Blow most of the air out of your lungs but fill up your cheeks with the last of it. Barely open your mouth with a pin-hole sized opening to slowly release the air in your cheeks. You're pushing the air out of your cheeks without using your lungs at all. While doing this you should be able to breathe in, and from there possibly learn to do it quicker and with more air to be able to play an instrument while doing it.
@Erinous When not performing in a marching band, it is not required for your flute to be parallel with the ground. Some people may prefer it to be flat while they are performing, but most people don't.
Quite good effort - but please, play Paganini's Moto Perpetuo + Caprices # 2, 3, 20 and Sitsky's Perpetuel Motion, perfomed by zdenek1113 on Youtube. I will be glad to discuss your approach, since I was the first flautist to perform Moto Perpetuo and also during my unaccompanied debut recitals [NY, London, Cleveland, Melbourne and American Flute convention in 1979 and 1997.
i came to my friend's house yesterday and saw him suffocating on the floor. Before calling 911 i looked up at his computer screen and saw this video play :D
hm i learnt to circular breath on my flute last year after practising it for 3 hours a day every day for like 3 months but holy crap that guy is my new idol, im still not very good at it i can go for a minute and a half but i dont have very good tone and cant get high notes very well. man i LOVE your flute i have a solid silver open hole TJJ but i sooo want yours....(im 15) and i am sooo getting one of them in the very distant future when i have enough money to get one
Wow! I didn't know circular breathing was possible on flute! I play sax and you do it way better than me!...lol I never really practiced the technique though...
When I compose for chamber music, I create places for breathing my VST recordings. When you don't do that, it sounds very MIDI like. However, a guy like this could make any composer's job easier! Very nice.
Hi. Been playing flute for 18, have a degree in flute performance, and am on my way to becoming a professional (someday). Would you mind posting an instruction video on how to circular breathe? Thanks so much! You sound great!
Holy good god, that was amazing. You are the MAN. I've been playing for over 12 years now and I know how to circular breathe for shorts bursts on the flute (much harder than any other instrument because you're not blowing directly into it), but it sounds like crap. Not only did you improvise a wonderful piece, and not only is your tone and your high notes rich and smooth, but you do it all while circular breathing. That takes mucho talent, man. Kudos kudos kudos.
He's circular breathing guys....Im a sax player. Its not THAT hard. You simply fill your cheeks with the excess air in your lungs then use your cheek muscles to push the air in your mouth into your horn, and while you are pushing it out with your cheeks, you breathe in through your nose. lol
Astounding! I play flute myself, although certainly not this good! I am blown away (no pun intended) by that breathing technique, really! Not to mention the talent Mr. Schmitz and the beauty of the song that he played. Bravo, bravo!!
woow circular breathing on a flute amazing how would you even begin to do that. Impressive i like you should totally put up a video on how to circular breathe that was amazing.
yeah, a few trombone players at my school can do it, and my band director is pretty good at it on trumpet. a lot of didgeridoo players use circular breathing as well.
@ahkinzero yeh i learnt when i was like 3 months from turning 14 cuz i wanted to do it before i turned 14 now im almost 15 and i know how to circular breath on my flute, although i have not very good tone at all. i learnt to circular breath on my flute, cuz i cant play didgeridoo or any bass instruments :)
i play flute and can hold a note for a minute or so without this technique but could you please post a tutorial on how to use circular breathing while playing the flute
To circle breathe you need to push the remaining air from inside your mouth/cheeks into the flute while taking a very fast breath through your nose then continue blowing with the new breath. It's not a tutorial but hope it helps.
Circular breathing on a flute is like doing it on the didjeridoo with very less backpressure. Nothing really difficult, just need some practise. But I wonder... Is it possible to circualr breathe on a persian nay? I can't... (I play it since yesterday, and it's the most difficult flute I've ever played).
if it is possible on a flute, it is possible on a ney too. not much pressure is needed, indeed, but the challenging part is to steer the air to the flutes edge
Flute is my main instrument and I can't circular breath on it (i'm 17), but i can very easily circular breath on a didjeridoo and trumpet/alto sax. Flute circular breathing is MUCH MUCH harder. It's really annoying sometimes cause i want to learn the technique for flute the most.
if I see you walking down the street some day... I'll pay you just for this video!!!!... one question... how you play without catching your breath? is like you never breathe....
circular breathing really isnt that hard once you know what to do, but when you try to apply it to the flute it becomes almost impossible. Marvelous performance by this guy im amazed at how good he is. I would really love to know how to do it if someone knows id be delighted to hear from u :)
yeah, i've tried circular breathing too. it's way hard to concentrate on doing it. This guy does multiphonics real good on one of his other vids, you should check it out
Fascinating. I have studied circular breathing for the saxophone but am still not completely there yet. One reason I took up playing the flute is that it is good for people who suffer from asthma. Exercizing the breathing apparatus really clears the bronchial passages. Not to mention that the flute is a beautiful instrument.
argh thankyou so much for this video...do you think you could explain to me how to circular breathe...i think i get the concept of the "using your cheeks as lungs" but still don't know how to achieve this... any tips?
I love the understated 'hello' at the start of this. Also I thought circular breathing was impossible on the flute because you need so much air to produce a note so I was very impressed.
Only a beginner needs so much air to produce a note and one of the secrets to do circular breathing is to reduce the amount of air whilst keeping up the resonance for a big sound. This has other advantages as well.
damn. I thought circular breathing was impossible on flute. I'm glad I was wrong. lol. awesome that you can. do you think it would be possible on piccolo?
this is so amazing! No matter how I try I cannot seem to store enough or be able to deliver a smooth air flow while breathing in! I think this secret is locked up at Area 51.
That really was amazing and well-done, Guenther. It was difficult to watch at first because I caught myself breathing where I felt comfortable while I watched you play and felt strange when you didn't breathe with me!
