Unhealthy dogs shouldn't be bred in first place. Crossbreeding is the best of solutions we have so far, to eliminate disabled dogs, such as the bulldog, etc...

This is one of the reason why dogs are being over bred, a woman spending $40k on medical bills! It's all about GREED. I also find many vet charging unbelievable amount for medical. Good breeders are there for the love of the dog. When I see them charging over $2k for a dog it makes me vomit. A Vet once was tried to chrge me almost $8k for my dogs hip. Pet Insurance is another culprit in this mess. $75 mo.and it doesn't cover shit. You have to get reimbursed IF they approve based on guidelines!
Purebreds are also good if you want to get a dog based on temperament. Which should always be number 1 on ur list. never choose a dog based on looks first. Second, the diseases it's known for and b prepared for the medical bills. above all, though an animal lover, remember to not jeopardize urself and the whole family by spending a whopping $40k on a dog like that woman with the cavalier. Love ur dog, but don't make ur self bankrupt unless u really do have $40k to spend.

Breeders are not into dog breeding for the money. Breeding is so expensive that breeders actually lose money on every puppy they breed.
I show Pyrenean Mountain Dogs and, as our breed is very healthy and problems have almost been bred out, this programme shocked me. I didn't realise that some breeds were so bad. Serious changes to breed standerds are required. :(
When your dog has epilepsy, its best not to touch it when it has a fit, or turn on a light. You could make the fit worse :/

sometimes the medication for seizures in dogs does more harm than good. when my beagle started having seizures the vet gave us medicine to give her but we decided against giving it to her because it can cause a dependency and actually cause more seizures.

As a dog loving person, I am appalled at the idea of senselessly killing a perfectly healthy puppy for the sake of a lack of an aesthetic feature that serves no function or purpose, and the lack of thereof will not cause any harm (and might even be beneficial for the health of said puppy).

All these people saying a dog who has seizures should be put down are uninformed. My 14 year old grandson starting having grand mal seizures a couple of years ago, should we put him down? I had them as a teen, outgrew them at 29, so I speak from experience. In the throes of a seizure you don't feel anything, it is much more frightening to those who witness it, the rest of the time you can lead a perfectly normal life. Since we know dogs feel love and joy, don't they deserve that chance?
@vaughn4082, I'll add another breed, I think Siberian Huskies are still very close to those bred by the Chukchi, and they are definitely still good, strong, healthy working dogs, they have to be to pull sleds hundreds of miles and be willing to still keep going even further. I have dozens of friends with a sibes, probably 200 or more dogs & only know of 3 with mild seizures, those were rescued from puppy mills, I've heard of cases of dysplasia & eye problems but know of none personally.

This doesn't just happen with dogs. Shire horses, for example, are abandoned or sold for meat if they don't have the 'correct' markings, and the same happens to thoroughbreds if they fail to win races. Perfectly healthy individuals, written off just because they don't look right, when as pets or working animals they could be very useful & bring a lot of joy to people's lives. It's utter madness & totally disgusting.

I put my 2 yr old irish setter down due to epilepsy. Watching the Boxer felt like a flashback for me. We just let our dog go last month. I couldn't let him live that way. We did for five months but then let him go.
Oh my Lord, just seeing (and listening) ot the Boxer Dog just broke my heart. It sounded like the dog was in pain. if I were in the condition, and had no hope, I would want someone to put me to rest as hard as it sounds. So sad.

That Ridgeback breeder makes me very upset. I work with a ridgeless Ridgeback and she is one of the sweetest and wisest dogs I've ever known. To think that if she had have been born to one of this ladies dogs she would have been culled is simply heartbreaking.
If you want a pet dog don't go near pedigrees. I have had two dogs in my life- both were cross-bred mutts (alsatian/somethingbigandhairy and border collie/godknowswhat) and theylived for 14 and 16 years respectively with minimal health problems.
Again, this is a BS anti-breeding animal rights video. They keep saying "no one knows how many dogs" have this condition or that condition: all you have to do is check vet records. Pay very close attention to how one sided information is delivered in things like this: think for yourselves. Comparing breeders to Nazis is a well known animal rights tactic.

Another good example is Persian cats. Their face is smashed so much now that it's hard for them to breathe. They are a mere shadow of what Persians used to look like. Same with Siamese. They've bred the head down to a slice of pie and the body to look emaciated. They look nothing like the SIamese's back in even the 1970's. It's up to the breeders and judges to stop this. Judges can stop it instantly. Give no wins to any cat or dog that has been extremely altered.
Not all breeders inbreed. It's up to the owner to avoid breeds that have significantly been altered for show. Check their pedigrees, sire and dam at least 5 generations back, to make sure there is no inbreeding. Stick to breeds that have groups dedicated to preserving the dog as it was and not ones that or breeds that are being changed to suit some show standard. There are many breeders of many breeds, dedicated to breeding to keep the dogs as it was and not alter it any way.
Are they honestly trying to compare dog breeders to Nazis??! That is absolutely disgusting! Dogs have been humanely culled for hundreds of years. The fact is, societies demands for fashionable breeds has been one of the main driving forces of the downfall of many breeds. In the 60's the poodle for example, now we have very poorly bred chihuahuas who suffer numerous problems because people go to the cheapest breeder and not the best. Supply and demand, think about it.

I remember the dashchund my Mom got when I was a kid. We were so entranced by our beautiful purebred dog, but she was riddled with health problems and eventually died of a heart condition when she was only six years old.

I agree with you, although some of those illnesses aren't hereditary and therefore not down to the breeding, and not all of them can be distinguished by just looking at a dog. But i seriously don't know a single judge who would give a dog a place for being lame, let alone having any of those illnesses.
Its true some stray dogs survive, although as they are a domesticated animal i can't see many breeds would... just look at a Chihuahua! The most concerning thing is if dogs were just left by themselves with no human interference, they would become extremely more inbred and disease ridden, as any dog would happily mate with its brother/sister etc, and they wouldn't be concerned if it had heart problems or anything else. At least responsible breeders can monitor them so that they are healthy.

I noticed from reading about their breeding they can only have litters once a year, and bitches can only have puppies when they are about 2...

I had three german shepherds and none of them looked like breed standard.
Actually, nearly all responsible breeders test their dogs, especially if they have a common illness in the breed. I think your thinking of puppy farmers, who breed the same dogs over and over again, using the same stud so that the puppies end up extremely inbred and are full of illnesses.

Breeders are not into dog breeding for the money. Breeding is so expensive that breeders actually lose money on every puppy they breed.
I show Pyrenean Mountain Dogs and, as our breed is very healthy and problems have almost been bred out, this programme shocked me. I didn't realise that some breeds were so bad. Serious changes to breed standerds are required. :(
When your dog has epilepsy, its best not to touch it when it has a fit, or turn on a light. You could make the fit worse :/

sometimes the medication for seizures in dogs does more harm than good. when my beagle started having seizures the vet gave us medicine to give her but we decided against giving it to her because it can cause a dependency and actually cause more seizures.

All these people saying a dog who has seizures should be put down are uninformed. My 14 year old grandson starting having grand mal seizures a couple of years ago, should we put him down? I had them as a teen, outgrew them at 29, so I speak from experience. In the throes of a seizure you don't feel anything, it is much more frightening to those who witness it, the rest of the time you can lead a perfectly normal life. Since we know dogs feel love and joy, don't they deserve that chance?

@vaughn4082, I'll add another breed, I think Siberian Huskies are still very close to those bred by the Chukchi, and they are definitely still good, strong, healthy working dogs, they have to be to pull sleds hundreds of miles and be willing to still keep going even further. I have dozens of friends with a sibes, probably 200 or more dogs & only know of 3 with mild seizures, those were rescued from puppy mills, I've heard of cases of dysplasia & eye problems but know of none personally.

This is EXACTLY one of the main reasons why I have cats!I'm a cat person totally anyway but still...Even pedigree cats are MUCH healthier and natural than pretty much any dog you can think of.Except persian perhaps, I would never get one of those OR a modern siamese. That's where human's have definitely gone TOO far with cats as well. It's just incredibly sad. I was crying watching this and I don't even care that much for dogs! But here you have animals in pain just because of selfish humans.

This doesn't just happen with dogs. Shire horses, for example, are abandoned or sold for meat if they don't have the 'correct' markings, and the same happens to thoroughbreds if they fail to win races. Perfectly healthy individuals, written off just because they don't look right, when as pets or working animals they could be very useful & bring a lot of joy to people's lives. It's utter madness & totally disgusting.

In my opinion, show dogs shouldn't be bred for the image, like it's hapenning and distroying them, but for their original porpuse. My ideal of "crufts" would be collies herding, pointers hunting and whippets coursing... That's what they were created for and that helps them keep their natural form.

If you want a pet dog don't go near pedigrees. I have had two dogs in my life- both were cross-bred mutts (alsatian/somethingbigandhairy and border collie/godknowswhat) and theylived for 14 and 16 years respectively with minimal health problems.

Another good example is Persian cats. Their face is smashed so much now that it's hard for them to breathe. They are a mere shadow of what Persians used to look like. Same with Siamese. They've bred the head down to a slice of pie and the body to look emaciated. They look nothing like the SIamese's back in even the 1970's. It's up to the breeders and judges to stop this. Judges can stop it instantly. Give no wins to any cat or dog that has been extremely altered.

Not all breeders inbreed. It's up to the owner to avoid breeds that have significantly been altered for show. Check their pedigrees, sire and dam at least 5 generations back, to make sure there is no inbreeding. Stick to breeds that have groups dedicated to preserving the dog as it was and not ones that or breeds that are being changed to suit some show standard. There are many breeders of many breeds, dedicated to breeding to keep the dogs as it was and not alter it any way.

Are they honestly trying to compare dog breeders to Nazis??! That is absolutely disgusting! Dogs have been humanely culled for hundreds of years. The fact is, societies demands for fashionable breeds has been one of the main driving forces of the downfall of many breeds. In the 60's the poodle for example, now we have very poorly bred chihuahuas who suffer numerous problems because people go to the cheapest breeder and not the best. Supply and demand, think about it.

I remember the dashchund my Mom got when I was a kid. We were so entranced by our beautiful purebred dog, but she was riddled with health problems and eventually died of a heart condition when she was only six years old.
I feel bad for these dogs, and I urge people to please adopt crossbred dogs or adopt from shelters. We have enough dogs in need of homes, we don't need to breed designer dogs.

I agree with you, although some of those illnesses aren't hereditary and therefore not down to the breeding, and not all of them can be distinguished by just looking at a dog. But i seriously don't know a single judge who would give a dog a place for being lame, let alone having any of those illnesses.

Its true some stray dogs survive, although as they are a domesticated animal i can't see many breeds would... just look at a Chihuahua! The most concerning thing is if dogs were just left by themselves with no human interference, they would become extremely more inbred and disease ridden, as any dog would happily mate with its brother/sister etc, and they wouldn't be concerned if it had heart problems or anything else. At least responsible breeders can monitor them so that they are healthy.

I think you oversaw three flaws in your thinking:
1. Who ever stated that most dogs belong to a breed? And the pedigree dogs of the show ring probably don't represent the majority of dogs.
2. The mating behaviour of dogs is very flexible. Look in Wikipedia in the dingo article and the article of interbreeding with other dogs, I have referenced a lot of sources you might find interesting.
3. The statement of the health does not have to be true, look at Moscow for example.

In reply to your questions, 1. That is true, and i can't speak for other countries but from my own experiences in the UK most dogs that people have as pets at least look pedigree. Also, i can't remember ever seeing a stray dog here. 2. Thanks for sharing, although from reading that it was dogs breeding with dingos, which are quite different. I noticed from reading about their breeding they can only have litters once a year, and bitches can only have puppies when they are about 2...

...although i know from breeding dogs myself, most bitches come in season every 6 months, and they can reproduce on their first season at 6 months - and trust me, they will try! Therefore i think if it was that humans didn't 'moniter' them, and they were in theory 'set wild,' it would be unkind to let this go on, they would still be puppies themselves and having litters, not fully grown and could seriously injure themselves giving birth. 3. I'm sorry, but i'm not sure what you are referring to?

try, maybe, choose every mate there is, not in the long run. Can you read german? If yes I know some research topic from italy on the subject. As for Moscow: just google Moscow, feral dogs and subway. On the pedigree, that looks different here in Germany. Most dogs I have seen are either clearly mongrel/breed less or if they belong to a breed aren't really pedigree (not in the show sense at least). I had three german shepherds and none of them looked like breed standard.

Actually, nearly all responsible breeders test their dogs, especially if they have a common illness in the breed. I think your thinking of puppy farmers, who breed the same dogs over and over again, using the same stud so that the puppies end up extremely inbred and are full of illnesses.

I know how purebred animals, like dogs/cats/horses, some look beautiful and different, but I also understand the view of those who are against breeding and buying purebreds cause of how many homeless cats and dogs there are and how many just inside a year have to be put down cause no one wants them :( I love himalayan cats, but I decided to bought two from a shelter. I also am intersted in borzois, but I think if I buy a dog someday, I´ll go for a shelter-one :)

if there is a paticular feature in the dog that they want to keep and the dogs son or daughter has it too they will inbreed them to try and keep it.
