Another tip would be to put a little dishsoap in the kombucha or vinegar you have in the glass the soap breaks the surface tension and they actually drown you wouldnt even need the funnel. :)
The fruit flies are so annoying, but more annoying to me is the kombucha jello slime that keeps growing in my bottles after bottling...any idea how to prevent it?
I end up straining it out, but its a pain and I only have a metal strainer (and I hear contact with metal is a no no...)
Nice to put a face with the messages! Great job on all the brewing info and fighting off the fruit flies! I make wine as a hobbie also, and they can be a pain in the a--!
Keep up the good work!
P.S. Shirt is ok...you need more color. HA! What do I know...I'm old and was never cool anyway!
Thanks for the tip! I expect this will come in handy when the summer months come back around.
One question and I suppose here is as good a place as any. On the KombuchaBlog under the Comments on "FAQ" there are several lengthy posts from a user "Michael" contradicting some of the information in the 7-day mini course, particularly the use of muslin cloth and lack of refrigeration. (Comment 292, and others)
Hey Dave! I received an e-mail from you a while ago with a link on how to keep a mini culture from growing in my bottles, but the link is dead! Can you help me out, because I really don't like slimy things in my throat!
So I brew K tea with like multiple mushrooms at once, some gd flies got in and were chilling only on the top one, I took it off threw it away and tranfered remaining mushrooms and tea to a new jar, think they are still ok?
Have you ever made Kambucha with a sweetener other than sugar? such as agave nectar. I'm not supposed to have sugar (although it may be moot because the mushroom apparently eats all the sucrose). Thanks! Great video!
Usually to deal with the fly problem I just take a short glass, add some apple cider vinegar, and then mix in some dish soap. I'll see if this works better.
this is a great way to deal with 'em. small bowl with a few tablespoons of cider vinegar and a drop or two of diluted dish soap. couple hours later = no more fruit flies
Thanks Dave! Trying to study up before getting my Kombucha... Great tip! I like th arts & crafts idea best... No doubt the energy you exude is Kombucha based! Awesome!! LoL
cute..;-) my girlfriend always leaves her Sobe bottles with a bit in it laying around and found the fruit flies cannot get out of those long neck bottles either!
loved the video. dave, you rock! love your humour. thank you :) now off to make my kombucha trap!
